The Budget Proposal As A Constructive Collections Engagement Tool And Practice, Evan Rusch, Pat Lienemann, Heidi J. Southworth, Nat Gustafson-Sundell
The Budget Proposal As A Constructive Collections Engagement Tool And Practice, Evan Rusch, Pat Lienemann, Heidi J. Southworth, Nat Gustafson-Sundell

At Minnesota State University Mankato (MNSU), our story might sound familiar. After more than a decade of flat or decreased budgets, we have cancelled hundreds of journal subscriptions and numerous journal packages. We do occasionally add journals, but only by cancelling others. We often say we are “managing library decline,” and our primary objective is to cut cleanly and accurately, so that we can continue to support accreditation and an evolving curriculum. Over the years, we have developed various tools to guide our cuts and we have demonstrated these at NASIG and elsewhere. These tools have also served for collection …
Develop An Interactive Python Dashboard For Analyzing Ezproxy Logs, Andy Huff, Matthew Roth, Weiling Liu
Develop An Interactive Python Dashboard For Analyzing Ezproxy Logs, Andy Huff, Matthew Roth, Weiling Liu
Faculty Scholarship
This paper describes the development of an interactive dashboard in Python with EZproxy log data. Hopefully, this dashboard will help improve the evidence-based decision-making process in electronic resources management and explore the impact of library use.
Novelty Visualizations Of Collections Data: Real Impact Or Comic Interlude?, Nat Gustafson-Sundell, Evan Rusch
Novelty Visualizations Of Collections Data: Real Impact Or Comic Interlude?, Nat Gustafson-Sundell, Evan Rusch
Library Services Publications
Nat and Evan have experimented with a new approach to data visualization using Dall-E 3, an image generation tool. The goal has been to create data illustrations, like charts, but using images. They discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this approach as demonstrated through numerous examples.
The Collections Pbi: Interactive Data Visualization For Campus Outreach, Nat Gustafson-Sundell, Evan Rusch, Pat Lienemann, Jeff Rosamond
The Collections Pbi: Interactive Data Visualization For Campus Outreach, Nat Gustafson-Sundell, Evan Rusch, Pat Lienemann, Jeff Rosamond
Library Services Publications
At Minnesota State University, Mankato, we have developed a new approach to collections outreach utilizing interactive data visualization in Microsoft Power BI. The new tool, which we call the Collections PBI, empowers us to demonstrate very clearly and vividly the library's value to campus. The Collections PBI can be used for a variety of purposes, including collection development and collection evaluation, for program review and accreditation. We will demonstrate the Collections PBI and talk about how we are using it to support collections outreach and other library priorities. We'll also discuss design and development issues so others can see how …
Full-Text Retrievals And Ebsco Discovery Service: Assessing Usage Of E-Journals Across Multiple Platforms, Simon Robins
Full-Text Retrievals And Ebsco Discovery Service: Assessing Usage Of E-Journals Across Multiple Platforms, Simon Robins
Roesch Library Faculty Publications
This study utilizes COUNTER 5 data from the University of Dayton (UD) to measure full-text retrievals of e-journal articles from five major academic journal publishers (Taylor & Francis, SAGE, Oxford, Wiley, and Springer). Usage data from these publishers’ e-journals within EBSCO is compared to the same content when accessed from publisher platforms such as Wiley Online Library or SpringerLINK. Building on previous studies that have largely focused on links (or referrals) from the library discovery layer to publisher platforms, this study analyzes usage of full text-articles stored within EBSCO Discovery Service and EBSCOhost subject databases to consider how these full-text …
Automating Collection Analysis Data Visualization In Jupyter Notebook: What's Possible And Why Would You Do It, Pat Lienemann, Luwis A.R.R. Andradi, Nat Gustafson-Sundell, Evan Rusch

Data visualizations help librarians see through the clutter of collection analysis metrics, and can be very useful for outreach to academic partners. Automating the production of data visualizations in Jupyter Notebook from standardized data inputs enables us to produce more reports for more academic departments, which increases our impact.
Deciphering Dense Data: Approaches To Visualization, Sara Amato, Kathleen Spring
Deciphering Dense Data: Approaches To Visualization, Sara Amato, Kathleen Spring
Faculty & Staff Presentations
Working with large data sets can be a challenge for both librarians and external stakeholders. Vendors often provide scads of data about the products we use, but sifting through it takes time. Visualization tools exist to help distill meaning from particularly dense data. This talk provides a look at how data visualization approaches can differ based on a variety of organizational factors such as staffing capacity, costs, and specific project requirements. We offer a nuts-and-bolts look at a serials and journals shared print project from the Eastern Academic Scholars’ Trust that uses Tableau and OpenRefine to create collection retention scenarios …
