Looking and benefits and best practices of WorldCat Collection Analysis in a subject-specific consortium.
In November, 2005, the eight libraries of the Desert States Law Library Consortium (University of New Mexico, University of Arizona, Arizona State University, University of Colorado, University of Denver, University of Utah, Brigham Young, and University of Nevada Las Vegas) licensed OCLC's WorldCat Collection Analysis Service (WCA). WCA is designed to provide objective information concerning the makeup of a library's collection, including subject coverage, age of materials, languages of publication and material types and audience level. Multi-institution comparisons provide detail and summary views of how two …

Booklists ... librarians love them, but they also raise many questions. This session explores where today's libraries fit in the dichotomy between what we 'should read,' what we 'want to read.' Our first stop on this exploration will be the concept of a booklist. Highlights of this part of the adventure will be: testing attendee's knowledge of current booklists, a review of booklist sources, and identification of OCLC booklist highlights. The literary canon will be the second focus of our session. After defining this concept, we will ask attendees to join us in a discussion of the library's role in …

This study compares ABI/INFORM and Business Source Premier, the two major periodical databases in the business field, to determine which database is covering the major scholarly journals most thoroughly. The comparison was made by compiling a list of major journals based on scholars' choice in the fields of accounting, finance, MIS, and marketing. In the field of management, the journals studied are based on ISI's Journal of Citation Reports. The list was compared with the title lists of journals indexed in each database. The results indicate that the two databases are very similar. ABI/INFORM is more comprehensive in the number …

A pilot study was developed to determine use of the University of Texas at Austin General Libraries’ research collections in the fields of civil engineering and educational psychology and to investigate the research behavior of graduate students. First, the authors sampled bibliographic citations from dissertations completed during the years 1997 and 2002 in the above-named fields. Then, a survey was sent to the dissertation writers to gain insight into use and opinions of library services for their graduate research. Analysis of information provided by both collection- and user-centered data-gathering techniques serves to underscore the value of the merged evaluation methods.

Analysis of a random sample of bibliographic records from OCLC WorldCat finds that the great majority of items in WorldCat are held by very few participating libraries, and that an inverse geometric relationship exists between the number of libraries holding an item and the number of items with a given level of shared holdings. The findings provide a context for interpreting holding levels in WorldCat with regard to the proportion of widely shared items and the characteristics of items at various ranges of holdings. Used with other quantitative and evaluative measures, these findings will assist libraries in assessing their collections.

Subject Librarians In The Changing Academic Library, Louise Feldman
Subject Librarians In The Changing Academic Library, Louise Feldman
E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)
Abstract
This article overviews the literature and key topics surrounding the role of subject librarianship in the evolving environment of academic libraries. Subject librarians are looked at in the context of the broad trends affecting librarianship and in the context of the traditional roles they have held in collection development, instruction, and reference. The author opened a discussion on this topic entitled, “Subject Librarians: Viable or Vanishing?” for the RUSA-CODES Dual Assignments Discussion Group at the American Library Association Midwinter Meeting in San Antonio, Texas in January of 2006.

Assessing Library Collections Using Brief Test Methodology, Jennifer Benedetto Beals
E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)
Abstract
The brief test methodology was developed by Howard White as an assessment tool to determine or verify the existing strength of a library collection. The relatively quick and inexpensive procedure utilizes the Research Libraries Group’s Conspectus levels, subject expertise, and cataloging records in WorldCat. In support of the University of Tennessee Libraries’ continuing efforts to encourage resource sharing with Information Alliance partners, I developed a project with art counterparts at the University of Kentucky and Vanderbilt University. Using brief tests, I completed an assessment of each institution’s collection in the subject area of African art. The results enabled us …

Use Of General Preservation Assessments: Outputs, Karen E.K. Brown

This study describes the extent to which institutions implement preservation recommendations resulting from a general needs assessment, including the time to implementation and the extent of program development. Most recommendations are preventive, with less emphasis on repair or reformatting activities. Data indicate that the majority of institutions accomplish recommended preservation actions with no neglected subject areas. Institutions with the highest rates of success spent more staff time preparing for the site visit, and had a longer site visit, compared to the population as a whole. Preparation of a preservation plan does not correlate to an enhanced capacity to implement preservation …
