Exploring Faculty Consideration Of Instructional Resource Cost To Students, Christine N. Turner, Sarah Fitzgerald, Anne Graham
Exploring Faculty Consideration Of Instructional Resource Cost To Students, Christine N. Turner, Sarah Fitzgerald, Anne Graham
University Libraries Presentations Series
This study investigated how instructors consider resource cost and availability to students when selecting reading and viewing assignments. It employs a critical incident technique method, asking instructors to consider one course syllabus when considering their assignment practices. Findings address differences across formats including books, chapters, articles, and media. Most instructors never consulted library personnel regarding their reading and viewing assignments. Social and behavioral science instructor responses demonstrated interest in course material cost to students. Humanities and fine art instructor responses also demonstrated interest in cost and familiarity with library services. Responses from natural science, nursing, and engineering demonstrated less familiarity …

From Intentional Meandering To Roadmap: Umass Amherst Libraries' Philosophical And Practical Considerations For Investing With "Open" Content Providers, Christine N. Turner, Scott A. Stangroom, Knowledge Unlatched
University Libraries Presentations Series
UMass Amherst (UMA) has chosen to invest in myriad models of open content, systems and advocacy organizations for well over a decade. What at first was an experimental approach has become more values-based, considered and collaborative. Consistent with its strategic plan, the Libraries are intentionally allocating and tracking part of their acquisitions budget to open scholarship. In an ecosystem of ever-increasing options, the social sciences and humanities (SSH) disciplines, monographs, and non-author processing charge (APC) funding are all under-represented in the open access market. UMA Libraries were an early supporter of Knowledge Unlatched (KU) as providers of OA monographs in …

Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) Conference Proceedings
TeDOC is part of the University Library System, owns a Great collection of historical and current maps, paper and digital and provides at their distribution to teachers and students, as part of the educational and research activities of the Politecnico di Milano. We were searching for a tool able to find, display and download current and historical cartography and, after a few years of work, we have become the first Europeans to use Open Geoportal (https://github.com/OpenGeoportal ) like our working tool. The component to ingest the data to OGP has evolved considerably, allowing better integration with GeoServer and allow automation …
To (Re)Frame It, Name It: Refining Spending Codes To Reveal New Collection Trends, Julie Linden, Sarah Tudesco
To (Re)Frame It, Name It: Refining Spending Codes To Reveal New Collection Trends, Julie Linden, Sarah Tudesco
ACRL New England Chapter Annual Conference
For college and research libraries, a major 21st century transformation has been the spending shift from print materials to electronic resources. This shift has triggered ongoing conversations about resource allocation at many institutions. Common assumptions that are drawn from these general trends:
• Spending on the sciences has increased at the expense of the humanities
• Spending on serials has increased at the expense of monographs
Overly simple expenditure codes that merely distinguish print from electronic do not allow these assumptions to be tested. This poster will demonstrate how a 2013 revision of expenditure codes used in the library’s acquisitions …

Creating A Social Justice Mindset: Incorporating Diversity, Inclusion, And Social Justice Into All Aspects Of Collections Work At Mit Libraries, Rhonda Kauffman, Michelle Miller
ACRL New England Chapter Annual Conference
Academic librarians are increasingly embracing diversity, inclusion, and social justice as values essential to our profession. The MIT Libraries has made a commitment to promoting the values of diversity, inclusion and social justice throughout the entire organization, and has sponsored a task force of the Collections Directorate to identify opportunities for archives, cataloging, acquisitions, preservation, and collections strategy staff to promote diversity, inclusion, and social justice in all aspects of library collections work. Over the course of eight months, the task force explored the topic philosophically and pragmatically. In our final report, we emphasized issues of economic justice, systems of …

E-Resource Acquisitions In Academic Library Consortia, Christine N. Turner

Scholarly publishing is the information marketplace in which academic libraries function, and major shifts in traditional publishing and pricing models are in process. Library consortia have long been viewed as a means of increasing purchasing power and reducing costs. In late 2010, the Five College Libraries (FCL) hired R2 Consulting, LLC to investigate and make recommendations regarding how the Libraries cooperate more closely on the acquisition, management, and delivery of electronic resources. This study examines and evaluates how other academic library consortia are licensing and acquiring electronic books, databases, journals and streaming media. The organizations, activities, processes, history and trends …

Sabbatical Report: Summary Of Survey Results On Digital Preservation Practices At 148 Institutions, Meghan Banach Bergin
Sabbatical Report: Summary Of Survey Results On Digital Preservation Practices At 148 Institutions, Meghan Banach Bergin
Meghan Banach Bergin
The purpose of my sabbatical project was to identify institutions with established digital preservation programs, and investigate how these programs were implemented. To accomplish this task, I conducted a web-based survey that looked into what systems were being used for digital preservation, what services were offered to the campus or user community, staffing and organizational models to support digital preservation programs, as well as the costs associated with these various digital preservation programs. I received a total of 148 responses to the survey. Of the 148 responses, 100 respondents finished the survey. To follow up from the survey, I conducted …
