This study will be helpful to improve the library website services. Participant’s overall responses to the UMT library website were favorable, indicating the scope and contents of the library website to be broadly appropriate to the library community. This study made many suggestions for new contents. Usability problems were identified in two main areas: in the website organization and in the terminology used to refer for information services and accessing information sources. Based on the study results, proposals were given for the modification of main menu structure, improved accessibility, changes to the terminology and improve the library website interaction with …

This webinar is the second session of a 2-part series intended to familiarize attendees with the practical applications of standards and best practices for collection management in an increasingly electronic world. Jointly developed by librarians, system providers, publishers, and other community members, standards and best practices help "grease the wheels" to ensure better interoperability between systems and automate some tedious tasks. Presenters introduce particular standards and describe how they work and their utility in helping libraries manage local and shared collections.

Practice Makes Perfect: Updating Borrowing Policies And Procedures At A Small Academic Library, Crystal Boyce
Practice Makes Perfect: Updating Borrowing Policies And Procedures At A Small Academic Library, Crystal Boyce

In 2011, staff from the undergraduate libraries at the College of William & Mary came together to evaluate circulation policies related to borrowing periods and billing. In an attempt to better align the policies across each unit, and with the intention of creating a more consistent user experience, new policies were proposed and implemented in the fall of 2012. These changes were found to dramatically decrease staff time necessary for billing, while improving user satisfaction with the borrowing policies. Significantly fewer books went into billing, suggesting no adverse effects on collection maintenance.

This is the online, archived version of a presentation I gave at the 29th Annual NASIG Conference in Fort Worth, TX on May 2, 2014. Results have been corrected to reflect an updated understanding of availability. Availability studies estimate the proportion of items in a collection that library users can access. This traditional research method can help librarians find and fix the most significant access problems with electronic resources, and connect patrons with information through better collection development and acquisitions decisions. To date, all electronic resource availability studies have been "simulated" studies, in which a librarian tests access to a …

While ASRS (automated storage and retrieval system) installations in libraries are not new, Liberty University’s was distinctive on several fronts: The ASRS vendor had no previous experience in libraries; the library aggressively chose to store some 70% of its main library collection in the ASRS; bins with books were preloaded as construction progressed, allowing for rapid ingestion into the ASRS and subsequent launch of regular retrieval; and the ASRS is a technological showpiece of the new library building. The speakers look at the planning, collection analysis, software development, loading and ingestion, and ILS management.

This is the online, archived version of a presentation given at SCELC Research Day, March 4, 2014, at Loyola Marymount University. Data have been updated to correct errors with initially reported availability rates. Availability studies, a systems analysis research method long used to improve access to print resources, have recently been applied to study the causes of electronic resource errors. However, to date no researchers have quantified the effectiveness of this method as a troubleshooting tool. This study compares the results of Mann's 2012 electronic resource availability study at the University of Redlands with a follow up study conducted one …

This article focuses on the current predicament in which American public academic law libraries find themselves given the budgetary and space constraints that have been passed down to them over time. By examining the current standards and future possibilities that govern these particular libraries, this article seeks to assist acquisitions librarians within these libraries with a way to examine, maintain, and purchase a collection that will take their library forward, prove their value and worth, and stay within their constantly dwindling budgets while remaining true to the library's core mission and obligation of providing services and support to the law …
