Conference Roundup - Code4lib 2022 Report, Rachel S. Evans
Articles, Chapters and Online Publications
Established in 2003 , Code4Lib welcomes hundreds of developers each year to their annual conference . The overarching theme of the group is to bring together program-centric librarians who are committed to the creation and use of open technologies. As you might imagine, this attracts all sorts of librarians from various environments including academic, public, and corporate sectors, and individuals carry a mosaic of titles including systems and electronic resources librarians, metadata and cataloging librarians, faculty services and research librarians, and those who work with discovery layers, online collections of all shapes and sizes, and many who care deeply about …

The often invisible labor of serials, technical services, metadata, and electronic resources workers sits in the space between required and preferred, assessment and surveillance. Although libraries and information workers did not explicitly create the systems many of us live in, we are responsible for their everyday functioning. In many ways the narratives from technical services to the library are centered in objects: item counts, COUNTER stats, door counts, discovery, and other transactional data. And yet, we are stewards and maintainers, innovators and storytellers of the countless ways these objects are experienced. How can we help our colleagues understand the outreach …
Rethinking Library Technical Services
Rethinking Library Technical Services
Faculty Publications and Presentations
The purpose of this roundtable presentation was to discuss the value or lack of value in tracking cataloging statistics; to query how other technical service departments are handling poor quality vendor records for electronic resources; and the stress of limited budgets and shrinking staff. The title of this discussion came from the book with the same title by Mary Beth Weber. The attached document contains topics of interest within that book, quotes from that book, as well as related resources.

Transitioning from OPAC to Primo is an extra challenge when the catalog is full of e-books and e-resources which date from before Primo. When you're part of a large consortium and there are multiple copies of those e-resource records in the catalog, the problem is compounded.
This presentation explains, for catalogers, the strategies used at CUNY to improve e-resource results in Primo (while keeping OPAC fans happy a little longer).
* The Primo record: Aleph vs PCI
* Will an Aleph record get a View Online tab?
* Conditional proxying of 856 links in Primo
* Broken links in the …

A User-Centered Approach To Addressing Issues Of Discoverability And Access, Nathan Hosburgh, Tess Graham

eResource access problems challenge electronic resources librari- ans and frustrate users. Challenges of using library systems can include information overload, links that do not work properly, incorrect metadata, and questionable relevance to search results. Nate Hosburgh, Electronic Resources Librarian at Montana State University, gave a presentation titled “A User-Centered Approach to Addressing Issues of Discoverability and Access” at the Mississippi State University Libraries’ eResource & Emerging Technologies Summit held in the Mitchell Memorial Library on August 2, 2013. Hosburgh spoke of lessons he and his team learned about troubleshooting eResources and his team’s approach to issues of discoverability and access.

Abstract from a User Group Meeting held at the North American Serials Interest Group (NASIG) 2009 Annual Conference, Riding the Rapids Through a Mountain of Change. The meeting took place in Asheville, North Carolina on June 7, 2009.
"Discuss how your library uses products such as 360 Core, 360 Resource Manager, and 360 Counter to manage and provide end-user access to e-resources. Share how your library has integrated these products into your work flow, including what level of staff in what areas of the library work with the products. Playaway devices were developed in 2005 by Findaway World LLC. (http://store.playawaydigital.com/). A Playaway is described as a “self-playing digital audio book” and is a device that contains a pre-loaded audio file in a proprietary format called ACELP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algebraic_Code_Excited_Linear_Prediction). The device requires one AAA battery and a set of earphones for playback and listening. Playaways contain almost exclusively spoken word recordings, but some musical content is available as well. According to the distributor, the focus of Playaways will remain audiobooks. Given the nature of a Playaway device, these materials include aspects of both sound recordings and electronic resources. They should be …
