Making De-Prioritized Gifts/Donations/Inventory Discoverable For Researchers, Alie Visser, Christina Zoricic
Making De-Prioritized Gifts/Donations/Inventory Discoverable For Researchers, Alie Visser, Christina Zoricic

This poster discusses a project to oversee the quality control and brief description of over 21,000 rare and unique items donated to the library in an unprocessed “backlog” spanning decades. The goals of this project include making the material discoverable and requestable by researchers, establishing labour benchmarks for material processing, and assigning an appropriate receiving library to items for inventory control in preparation for the cataloguing unit’s move to a new physical location.
Following a system migration from Sierra to Alma, the library was left with over 21,000 unprocessed items that were not represented in the library’s discovery system. Lacking …

Failed Jobs: Import Data To Primo Ve – Institutional Repository Edition, Alie Visser, Christina Zoricic

Prior to migration Western Libraries used Summon for discovery and BePress for our institutional repository. Summon ingested BePress IR records no problem. Alma – not so much. At migration, we incorrectly assumed the ingest would function the same way in Alma. Attend to hear about our woes and commiserate. Maybe you can solve all of our problems!

An overview of Syndetics Unbound and BrowZine, both subscription products, including how to set them up in Alma and how they integrate into Omni's (Primo VE) display.

This session reviews an approach to refreshing policies, procedures, and practices following a migration to a library services platform (LSP). Using a method of intensive collaboration, we revised and developed new workflows to optimize consortial and international standards while evaluating and updating local policies and procedures with a critical eye. We designed templates and procedures incorporating standards established by Collaborative Futures partners, and including other international standards, such as CONSER, RDA, BIBCO and PCC.

While libraries have been closed during the pandemic, we have had an increase in demand for our Annual Reports collection. Researchers may be spending more time searching the web or expanding the types of materials to explore in the research process. We've had to re-think how to supply reports that are only available in microfiche or in print storage. It has taken a combined effort to supply the reports. The pandemic has reinforced our desire to make digitized reports more accessible to our users and potentially more discoverable to a wider variety of users.

Following the trend of re-purposing library space to meet modern user needs, Western University is undergoing a planned revitalization and renovation of its largest library on campus. As a result, 500,000 items will need to be shifted to other locations or off-site storage. In this session we will outline the impact of metadata work in shifting this large collection of material to a shared print preservation storage facility, in coordination with Western University’s Keep@Downsview partnership (https://downsviewkeep.org/). Keep@Downsview is a partnership of five universities to preserve the scholarly record in Ontario in a shared, high-density storage and preservation facility. …

The goal of the SHARE initiative, a partnership between the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the Center for Open Science (COS), is to build a “free, open, data set about research and scholarly activities across their life cycle.” As of October 12, 2016, 129 repositories and publishers have made metadata available to SHARE for harvesting, and the aggregated data set is available for searching. Many metadata providers are institutional repositories utilizing the bepress Digital Commons platform whose metadata is harvested through the OAI-PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) protocol for repository interoperability.
