Creating A Sustainable Workflow For Converting Online Finding Aids Into Marc Records, Ann Kardos

University Libraries Presentations Series

Data regarding library collections exists in many locations. While this often works for those researchers who know what they're looking for, one institution created a plan to convert online finding aids into MARC records for the discovery layer. The project makes additional avenues to discover unique collections but also gives opportunities to create Library of Congress name authority records for distinct entities or hidden individuals and groups. This project became a model for standardization of this work across the consortium, and brought together stakeholders from metadata, special collections, archives, digital collections and library IT.

This paper reports on new opportunities for research and education in Free and Open Source Geoinformatics as a translational part of Open Science, enabled by a growing collection of OSGeo conference video recordings at the German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB). Since 2015, OSGeo conference recordings have been included to the collection sphere of TIB in information sciences. Currently, video content from selected national (FOSSGIS), regional (FOSS4G-NA) and global (FOSS4G) conferences is being actively collected. Within the earth sciences the curation and sharing of geo-samples is crucial to supporting reproducible research, in addition to extending the use of the samples in new research, and saving costs by avoiding sample loss and duplicating sampling activities. In the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), researchers gather various geo-samples as part of their field studies and collaborative projects. The diversity of the samples and their unsystematic management led ambiguous sample numbers, incomplete sample descriptions, and difficulties in finding the samples and their related data. The University of Massachusetts Amherst Libraries established their institutional repository (IR), ScholarWorks@UMass Amherst, in 2006, and we began by systematically populating it with electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs). We currently have a little over 4,500 dissertations and theses in our IR, and they are some of the\ most highly used content in our repository. Through a partnership with the Graduate School, we collect and disseminate all of our current master’s theses and doctoral dissertations through ScholarWorks. We recently launched an ambitious project to scan all 24,000 of our print dissertations and theses and upload them to our IR. In this …

The purpose of my sabbatical project was to identify institutions with established digital preservation programs, and investigate how these programs were implemented. To accomplish this task, I conducted a web-based survey that looked into what systems were being used for digital preservation, what services were offered to the campus or user community, staffing and organizational models to support digital preservation programs, as well as the costs associated with these various digital preservation programs.
