Christian Libraries For The Next Generation: Expanding Access To Evangelical Literature, Gregory A. Smith Nov 2009

Christian Libraries For The Next Generation: Expanding Access To Evangelical Literature, Gregory A. Smith

Gregory A. Smith

Recent changes in the world of information present unique challenges and opportunities for the dissemination of evangelical literature. This report suggests six ways that the Association of Christian Librarians can support evangelical education and scholarship in a context that is increasingly global, Web-based, and free from the confines of the traditional college campus. Implementing a combination of these strategies could make evangelical literature much more accessible via the Web, the dominant delivery platform of our day. However, choices among available strategies must take account of competition within the marketplace.

Exploring The Placelessness Of Reading Among Older Teens In A Canadian Rural Municipality, Paulette Rothbauer

Paulette Rothbauer

Situated in a review of rural, cultural, and youth geographies, this article reports on a qualitative study of the role of reading and libraries in the lives of older rural teenagers. The primary method of data collection was the use of in-depth, flexibly structured interviews with twenty-seven youth between the ages of fifteen and nineteen years, supplemented with data from unobtrusive observation and environmental scanning in a specific geographic locale. Four themes are discussed: the habitual, quotidian reading of teenagers; the shifting visibility of the public library; the Internet and the World Wide Web as a default reading site; and …

Scholarship In The Digital Age: Blurring The Boundaries Between The Sciences And The Humanities (Keynote), Christine L. Borgman Jun 2009

Scholarship In The Digital Age: Blurring The Boundaries Between The Sciences And The Humanities (Keynote), Christine L. Borgman

Christine L. Borgman

As the digital humanities mature, their scholarship is taking on many characteristics of the sciences, becoming more data-intensive, information-intensive, distributed, multi-disciplinary, and collaborative. While few scholars in the humanities or arts would wish to be characterized as emulating scientists, they do envy the comparatively rich technical and resource infrastructure of the sciences. The interests of all scholars in the university align with respect to access to data, library resources, and computing infrastructure. However, the scholarly interests of the sciences and humanities diverge regarding research practices, sources of evidence, and degrees of control over those sources. This talk will explore the …

Returning To The Sources: The Literature Of Christian Librarianship, Gregory A. Smith Jun 2009

Returning To The Sources: The Literature Of Christian Librarianship, Gregory A. Smith

Gregory A. Smith

By definition, a research study explores new intellectual territory yet builds on previous inquiry that has led up to it. However, many sources that explore the connections between Christian faith and the information professions fail to acknowledge the existence of prior discourse on the subject. The author has assembled a database of more than 450 sources that discuss topics such as philosophy and ethics of librarianship from a Christian perspective; the mediation of Christian/religious information in various library contexts; Christian, religious, and theological publishing; and more. Insights from these sources can help readers develop professionally and engage in productive dialogue …

Building An Institutional Repository In Hard Times, Michael Holt, Fatih Oguz, Deborah Davis, Cliff Landis

Cliff Landis

This poster presents an overview of an exploratory research initiative to examine and assess the viability of developing an institutional repository system at a teaching-oriented four-year university with minimal monetary commitment. A need has been identified for an institutional repository and necessary steps have been taken to implement it. Several departments worked together to create a prototype Institutional Repository using DSpace, an open source repository software. This repository represents a unique endeavor, in that it has been instituted at a non-research based university and has chosen to involve students in the planning, design, implementation, and documentation stages of the project. …

Of the estimated 1,200 works to be included in the catalogue, approximately 735 constitute the composer’s juvenilia, the documenting and analysis of which has been the core aim of the project’s first stage over the past three years. The article outlines the bespoke technical and cataloguing solutions developed during this initial stage to deal with many of the challenges presented as a result of developing …

The Digital Future Is Now: A Call To Action For The Humanities, Christine L. Borgman Dec 2008

The Digital Future Is Now: A Call To Action For The Humanities, Christine L. Borgman

Christine L. Borgman

The digital humanities are at a critical moment in the transition from a specialty area to a full-fledged community with a common set of methods, sources of evidence, and infrastructure – all of which are necessary for achieving academic recognition. As budgets are slashed and marginal programs are eliminated in the current economic crisis, only the most articulate and productive will survive. Digital collections are proliferating, but most remain difficult to use, and digital scholarship remains a backwater in most humanities departments with respect to hiring, promotion, and teaching practices. Only the scholars themselves are in a position to move …

A Conversational Model For Qualitative Research: A Case Study Of Clergy And Religious Knowledge, Daniel Roland, Don A. Wicks

It illustrates the potential of the qualitative research interview when the researcher is able to enter into and maintain a conversation with the research informant as an insider in the latter's community. The paper draws from lessons learned in a case study of a clergy-person's preparation of their Sunday sermon, and proposes an innovative research design model that addresses the validity and reliability concerns related to the methodology. Specifically, this model develops an insider perspective of the phenomenon of study …

Wwi Postcard Collection: A Community-Based Model For Digital Libraries, Marc D. Bayer

The paradigm shift of academic libraries from information purveyors to places of learning and communicating must occur virtually as well as physically. By creating informal virtual communities around digital collections , librarians can participate in the academic discussion and make more formal collections better known.
