The Librarian In Rowling’S Harry Potter Series, Mary Freier
Mollie Freier
In her article "The Librarian in Rowling's Harry Potter Series" Mary P. Freier discusses Hermione Granger's skills as a librarian and researcher which lead to the defeat of Lord Voldemort. In each novel in the series, Hermione's research provides the necessary information for the solving of the mystery. Throughout the series, Hermione proves to be the only character who can use books effectively without putting herself or others in danger. Nontextual Searching, Susannah Cleveland
Susannah Cleveland
In this article the author discusses aspects of nontextual searching for library patrons who don't know the name of a musical piece or movement. She discusses the variety of reasons why traditional library catalogs can't account for musical content, such as melody, chords, and rhythm, the use of thematic catalogs, which indexes a composer's works and includes the first few bars of each piece or movement, and mobile device applications, such as SoundHound.

Your Library Website Stinks And It's Your Fault, Matthew Reidsma
Matthew Reidsma
Library websites stink. They are difficult to use and create tension between us and our patrons. This is a talk about library websites, but it's really a talk about people. It's a talk about our library patrons, a talk about us, what's wrong with the way we're doing things, how and who it hurts, and what we can do about it.

Precedent Or Preference? Music Recommender Systems And The Challenge Of Genre, Jason Neal
Precedent Or Preference? Music Recommender Systems And The Challenge Of Genre, Jason Neal
Jason R. Neal
With the advent of user-generated content and the capabilities of current information and communication technologies, indexing and retrieval tools for music should facilitate discovery that transcends genre boundaries. Nonetheless, they still privilege genre as the primary mode of categorization. Even recommender systems, which utilize other measures to determine similarity, give the appearance of drawing upon genre. By examining the ambiguous boundaries and definitions of genres, the contexts in which indexing and retrieval tools for music have developed, and the roles played by music at individual and societal levels, this paper considers alternative traits that could act as indicators of “similarity.”

Richard Verstegan's Reinvention Of Anglo-Saxon England: A Contribution From The Continent, Richard Clement

The reinvention of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance is an historicized approach to constructions of the past. How and why does the present of any period uses the past to promote its own opinions, beliefs, doctrines or views? In particular, this volume demonstrates that reinventions of past eras or figures can be motivated by a nationalistic desire to create cultural 'roots', to discover origins that justify a regime or group's self-identity, to appropriate a cultural icon or neglected author for a particular political agenda, or to reflect on contemporary social issues via a remote time and place. Reworkings or …
