Documents In The Dynarchive: Questioning The Total Revolution Of The Digital Archive, Rachel Pierce Dec 2021

Documents In The Dynarchive: Questioning The Total Revolution Of The Digital Archive, Rachel Pierce

Proceedings from the Document Academy

The digital archive is often described in opposition to its physical counterpart. Media theorist Wolfgang Ernst has coined the term “dynarchive” to describe the former, a phrase that neatly contrasts digital archival remixability with the statis of the physical archive and its hierarchical fond structure. The article both uses and questions this characterization by examining the archive’s physical and digital document practices in three areas: (1) Hierarchical collection description versus individual document description; (2) Original order versus relevance-based results; and (3) Archival selection practices and the illusion of completeness. Archival structure and description have been central to the authority and …

Commuters’ Health Certificate As Social Control During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Suprayitno Suprayitno, Rahmi Rahmi, Lydia Christiani

Proceedings from the Document Academy

In Indonesia, a regulation on large-scale social restrictions (“Pembatasan Sosial Berskala Besar” or PSBB) restricted citizens’ activities in the cultural, social, and economic sectors. These large-scale social restrictions also impact Jakarta’s activities from the commuting communities of Central Java, the Yogyakarta Special Region, and East Java Provinces. As a result, these commuters have become accustomed to travelling back to their hometowns every Friday afternoon. On Sundays, they return to Jakarta and arrive in Jakarta on Monday mornings to go to work. This activity is often referred to as “Pulang Jumat Kembali Ahad” (PJKA) or Going Home Every Friday Evening and …

This short paper and presentation is an update on the previously presented in July of 2021 titled “Automation Using Metadata Filters & Leveraging Research Assistants” with Savanna Nolan. Since that presentation, UGA Law Library served as a beta tester for Elsevier’s DCX – the Digital Commons exhibit solution. Launched late summer 2021, the exhibits that went live from UGA Law pleasantly surprised librarians who were lucky enough to discover that researchers were already retrieving the new digital exhibit content in their search engine results. This short paper shares the reasons why I have preferred working in DCX to build digital …

An Analysis Of The Research Productivity & Research Interests Of Library And Information Science Department Of Panjab University In Zenodo Community, Subhajit Panda, Dr. Atasi Sinhababu

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The crisis in open access scholarly communications leads to several initiatives promoting the development of open access repositories. It reduces the repetition of research studies by minimising the cost of access and encouraging the reuse of research data. But at the same time, the contributor researchers are also concerned about the long term preservation, meta-descriptions and citation support of their research publication shard in open access repositories. Zenodo, as an open access repository, supports a wider variety of use cases, and many of them implement minimal control on the data uploaded by users. The present study discusses the research output …

“Quietly Incomplete”: Academic Historians, Digital Archival Collections, And Historical Research In The Web Era, Donald Force, Bradley Wiles

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

Since the early 1990s, archives institutions largely have approached digital archival collections with an “if we build it, they will come” mentality. But the extent and motivations of use for traditional and emerging patron groups are constantly evolving, and the factors or conditions that characterize use vary wildly in the web environment. As part of a broader study investigating how academic historians utilize and interact with digital archival collections, this paper details the findings of a pilot project involving a citation analysis, survey, and semi-structured interviews with academic historians from a medium-sized Carnegie Research 1 university. This limited exploratory study …

Creating The Experience: Engaging Millennials In Museums With A Focus On Jewish Millennials And Museums, Sarah G. Drozda

Museum Studies Theses

In this research, I explore two main ideas: The relationship that millennials have with museums and what programming excites them into coming back to the museum. To do this, I did a background review of the motivations and passions of the millennial generation, as well as various programming that have engaged millennials in museums. As someone who is a millennial and passionate about Jewish museums and Jewish engagement, I focused my research on how museums can help to bring Jewish millennials closer to their heritage, culture, and Jewish identity. A good segment of Jewish millennials is not drawn to traditional …

Proof Positive: Applications Of Chemical Analysis Techniques In Art Forgery Detection, Joseph Fryc Dec 2021

Proof Positive: Applications Of Chemical Analysis Techniques In Art Forgery Detection, Joseph Fryc

Museum Studies Theses

In response to the subjective nature of older forgery detection techniques, modern forgery detection methods rely heavily on chemical analysis of the materials utilized in a given piece of work in order to make authenticity determinations. Chemical methods of detection at their core provide an objective determination of facts regarding the composition of materials utilized in contested pieces and provide a relative date of production for those materials. In this way, chemical analysis helps service the field of modern forgery detection as a direct compliment to traditional stylistic analysis, by providing extra data on the piece that can often be …

Museums & Environmental Sustainability: Are They Doing Enough?, Alexandra M. Dwyer

Museum Studies Theses

As the world continues to be affected by the rapid rates of climate change, institutions from every sector are transitioning to become more sustainable by reducing or eliminating their harmful habits on the ecosystem. Whether by their own accord or external pressure from current legislative action to cut carbon emissions, institutions are shifting towards a sustainable future. For museums there are additional unique reasons to adopt sustainability into various aspects with their institution. The most influential reason is that museums have a responsibility as community leaders and change makers. However, looming questions remain: Are museums doing enough? Are these cultural …

No Manuals: Archives Administration 100 Years After Jenkinson’S Manual, James Lowry, Riah Lee Kinsey, Aimee Lusty, Ezra Hyman, Phyllis Heitjan, Alexander Rettie, Kylie Goetz

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

This article discusses authority and the codification of professional principles in the archival field by comparing Sir Hilary Jenkinson’s Manual of Archive Administration (1922) with the contents of a wiki called A (New) Manual of Archive Administration, created by the Archival Discourses research network in the lead up on the centenary of Jenkinson’s text. Instead of a systematic comparison of the two texts, the article uses the mode of the “wiki game” to randomly navigate the intellectual content of the wiki. The authors then make comparisons between the wiki entries and the ideas espoused in Jenkinson’s manual. This comparison …

Overall, it is a valuable resource for those taking on community and participatory archives efforts.
