Sabbatical Report: Summary Of Survey Results On Digital Preservation Practices At 148 Institutions, Meghan Banach Bergin

Meghan Banach Bergin

The purpose of my sabbatical project was to identify institutions with established digital preservation programs, and investigate how these programs were implemented. To accomplish this task, I conducted a web-based survey that looked into what systems were being used for digital preservation, what services were offered to the campus or user community, staffing and organizational models to support digital preservation programs, as well as the costs associated with these various digital preservation programs. I received a total of 148 responses to the survey. Of the 148 responses, 100 respondents finished the survey. To follow up from the survey, I conducted …

The Benefits Of Managing And Publishing Etds "In House" Using An Open Access Repository, Meghan Banach

Meghan Banach Bergin

Open access repositories have given universities an exciting new opportunity to manage and publish their own ETDs. At the same time, new challenges have emerged such as objections to open access and new more complicated workflows. Meghan Banach, Metadata Catalog Librarian at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, has coordinated the library side of ETD management for the past 4 years. She oversees the management of about 500 theses and dissertations per year. She will use the UMass ETD program as a case study to describe two workflows for managing ETDS: one for doctoral dissertations which involves both the UMI Proquest …

Institutional Repositories And Digital Preservation: Assessing Current Practices At Research Libraries, Meghan Banach, Yuan Li May 2011

Institutional Repositories And Digital Preservation: Assessing Current Practices At Research Libraries, Meghan Banach, Yuan Li

Meghan Banach Bergin

In spring 2010, authors from the University of Massachusetts Amherst conducted a national survey on digital preservation of Institutional Repository (IR) materials among Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member institutions. Examining the current practices of digital preservation of IR materials, the survey of 72 research libraries reveals the challenges and opportunities of implementing digital preservation for IRs in a complex environment with rapidly evolving technology, practices, and standards. Findings from this survey will inform libraries about the current state of digital preservation for IRs.
