Making Your Mobile Device An Art Expert: Using Qr Codes To Tell The Story Behind Artifacts In Your Library, Jessica Howard, Carolyn Sautter

Jessica Howard

Have you ever wondered about the stories behind the public art in your library? Every object has the potential to tell a story—the paintings, the sculpture, the furniture, and the building itself. At Musselman Library, Gettysburg College, we use QR codes as the technical means to satisfy the natural curiosity of our patrons. Historical information already available in our Special Collections and College Archives was repurposed for the mobile-friendly environment. The artiFACTS project proved to be simple, scalable, and a great opportunity for collaboration. Change is a fundamental feature of life and living; without it, few things would survive, and fewer, if any, would thrive. The New England Journal of Public Policy has undergone a change, having elected to assume an electronic form. Since coming into being in this form three months ago, the success it has realized with its earlier issues has been remarkable. It is as if it were being waited on. In the month of December 2012, for example, the journal was the second most popular publication series on ScholarWorks at the University of Massachusetts Boston, with a total of 2,783 …

In addition, a new method for streamlining workflow was developed that will increase effectiveness. This article explores the process and explores the outcomes of the conversion process.

What can researchers do when they want to transform a traditional lecture into a collaborative, hands-on learning experience? How can participants learn and become empowered to construct and maintain historical records that reflect their experiences? An archivist can lecture students about basic archival practices and the students can learn a few skills, but hands-on activities for record creation and maintenance that facilitate participants’ learning will create collaborators with basic, but important, archival skills.

Shining A Light On The Digital Dark Ages, Meg Miner Sep 2013

Shining A Light On The Digital Dark Ages, Meg Miner

Meg Miner

“What is digital preservation?” “Why should I worry? Storage options are cheap and everywhere!”
This is the spirit of the responses digital preservationists typically hear if not the actual words. Following a year of interviews and investigations, I can attest that our community shares these beliefs. Personal and institutional practices of collecting digital objects often indicate that people are unaware of the fragility of digital media and unconcerned about longevity of access.
IWU is one of five participating institutions researching digital preservation options for small- to medium-sized college and university libraries. Our involvement as part of a two-year National Leadership …

University archives exist to acquire, preserve, and provide access to university records with enduring value. What happens when content sought for institutional repositories overlaps with content acquired by university archives? How do acquisition, appraisal, description, and preservation practices differ between the two and when should they be shared processes? This session provides answers to these questions and focuses on relationships between repository staff and archivists in relation to policies, logistics, and workflows.

Digital Data Capture For Small And Mid-Sized Institutions, Lynne Thomas, Meg Miner

Meg Miner

While many larger institutions are making headway on digital preservation, medium-sized and smaller-sized institutions have struggled to make similar progress. And yet, readiness concerning digital materials is essential as more hard drives and CDs arrive from donors and old media formats become obsolete. This panel describes the strategies that small and medium-sized institutions are implementing as a result of a National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Digital POWRR, or, Preserving (digital) Objects with Restricted Resources, involves five Illinois academic institutions investigating campus-wide preservation of digital objects.

Learning To Live Without A Statistical Abstract: Thinking About Future Access To Government Information, James Shaw Jun 2013

Learning To Live Without A Statistical Abstract: Thinking About Future Access To Government Information, James Shaw

James B Shaw

Twenty-four years ago, in 1987, I made a presentation called “Basic Ready Reference: Documents that a Reference Librarian Cannot Live Without” at a meeting of the Iowa Library Association Government Documents Round Table. My top recommendation was the Statistical Abstract of the United States, that annual compendium of data so familiar and indispensible to American librarians everywhere. Twelve years ago, in 1999, I made a similar presentation at the NLA/NEMA Annual Conference, and again the Statistical Abstract took its place as the preeminent resource. The title of my presentation today, “Learning to Live Without a Statistical Abstract,” signals that our …

In 2010, Boise State University began integrating mobile technology into teaching and learning environments on campus. Albertsons Library Special Collections and Archives (ALSCA) at the university soon followed; as an experiment in November 2012, we gave patrons access to four iPads in our reading room. We asked researchers to use them and share their experiences. Although the iPads were available for only six weeks, we quickly realized the benefits of making iPads a permanent addition to our reading room.

Curating The Ethnographic Moment, Andrew D. Asher, Lori M. Jahnke Dec 2012

Curating The Ethnographic Moment, Andrew D. Asher, Lori M. Jahnke

Andrew Asher

Digital technologies have vastly increased the volume of materials that ethnographic researchers are able to collect. They have also enhanced possibilities for rapidly sharing data not only with other researchers, but also with research subjects and the public at large. However, the relative ease of collecting digital materials can quickly outpace the data management skills of researchers, who usually have little or no training in recordkeeping, preservation, or curation strategies. Making digital data available online can also compound ethical dilemmas faced by ethnographers, who often find themselves torn between contradictory imperatives to share data publically and to protect the privacy …
