It’S Not Just About Civility: How Procedural Fairness And Social Capital Can Cure Congressional Gridlock, Jolie Libert Sep 2020

It’S Not Just About Civility: How Procedural Fairness And Social Capital Can Cure Congressional Gridlock, Jolie Libert

The Commons: Puget Sound Journal of Politics

Undeniably, our country has reached a moment of heightened partisan competition. Political polarization, negative partisanship, the disappearance of institutionalism, and the tribal nature of our two-party system all point to the dysfunction that Congress currently experiences. Some have called for a restoration of civility in both political rhetoric and actions, yet civility might just be the ultimate lost cause in Washington. Congressional gridlock cannot be cured with civility as niceness. Looking at how Jim Wright (D) and Newt Gingrich (R) conducted their political business, each while Speaker of the House, serve as case studies that provide an understanding of how …

Confronting An Unprincipled America: Lessons In Leadership From Barack Obama, Chloe Harper Jun 2020

Confronting An Unprincipled America: Lessons In Leadership From Barack Obama, Chloe Harper

VA Engage Journal

Ethical leadership is a concept valued, and even inherently understood, by most Americans, but today, we are seeing fewer individuals committed to making ethical decisions in leadership roles. Moreover, we are often unable to recognize when an ethical decision-maker is before us. Drawing on the works of such scholars as Edgar Schein, Reinhold Niebuhr, and Jonathan Haidt, I evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of Barack Obama, 44th president of the United States and the first African American to hold executive office, in order to determine what factors distinguish ethical leaders from simply respectable leaders. I focus on the role leaders …

The Men Or The Mission: Can An Army Of Servants Become An Army Of Servant Leaders?, Douglas Gain, Phil C. Bryant May 2020

The Men Or The Mission: Can An Army Of Servants Become An Army Of Servant Leaders?, Douglas Gain, Phil C. Bryant

Servant Leadership: Theory & Practice

This paper evaluates the theory of servant leadership as a viable solution to the Army’s sometimes toxic leadership problem. The research question this paper asks is: is servant leadership a viable option for official U.S. Army leadership doctrine? We build the case that while servant leadership is fundamentally incompatible with Army Leadership and is not a viable option for official U.S. Army leadership doctrine, some of the basic tenets of servant leadership are adoptable and adaptable by the U.S. Army. Furthermore, we recommend that the U.S. Army focus on better communicating their existing leadership doctrine throughout the organization rather than …

Application Of The Donabedian Quality-Of-Care Model To New York State Direct Support Professional Core Competencies: How Structure, Process, And Outcomes Impacts Disability Services, Johanna Loporto May 2020

Application Of The Donabedian Quality-Of-Care Model To New York State Direct Support Professional Core Competencies: How Structure, Process, And Outcomes Impacts Disability Services, Johanna Loporto

Journal of Sustainable Social Change

Direct support professionals (DSPs) are responsible for the daily supervision and care of people diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) living in community residential group homes. In New York State, these DSPs are trained within the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities DSPs core competencies; a set of ethical, technical, and cognitive training geared to the individual care of each person as per their specific needs. This qualitative case study was to understand how DSPs perceived the implementation of the core competencies after being trained and under the direction of their supervisors. Using the Donabedian’s quality-of-care conceptual framework, this …

Book Review: The Third Pillar: How Markets And The State Leave The Community Behind, George Morrow Feb 2020

Book Review: The Third Pillar: How Markets And The State Leave The Community Behind, George Morrow

Essays in Education

Rajan, Raghuram (2019). The Three Pillars: How Markets and the State Leave the Community Behind. New York: Penguin.

Mr. Rajan explains the success and failure of societies through the interrelationship of three social sciences (what he calls pillars): economics (the marketplace), political science (government), and sociology (communities). In Section I, Mr. Rajan describes the origins of each pillar starting at the end of the medieval era. Each pillar has its own tale related to it social science but their stories are interwoven as well. An example: the marketplace and the expansion of trade (both territorially and in complexity) could only …
