Daily Stock Market Movement From Oscillating Social Mood Factors, Cari Bourette
Daily Stock Market Movement From Oscillating Social Mood Factors, Cari Bourette
Cari Bourette
Since 2006, there has been ongoing research into the correlation of a set of oscillating mood factors and socioeconomic, geopolitical, and natural events with the goal of forecasting increased risks of destabilizing events. While promising results have been forthcoming, it has been difficult to present models that allowed those outside a small circle of specialists to participate. Between July 2007 and June 2010, weekly social mood projections, as published in monthly issues of MoodCompass, were used to develop a model to convert four oscillating mood factors into stock market expectations. This model was modified to generate signals of projected stock …

Investigating The Impact Of Restricted Irrigation Practices On Soil Moisture Variability And Distribution In A Dry Farmed Vineyard Site, Boise, Idaho, J. Duffin, David Wilkins, J. Guenther
Investigating The Impact Of Restricted Irrigation Practices On Soil Moisture Variability And Distribution In A Dry Farmed Vineyard Site, Boise, Idaho, J. Duffin, David Wilkins, J. Guenther
David E. Wilkins
Changing climate in semiarid regions may result in increased water stresses for agricultural production as timing and form of precipitation may result in diminished surface water for irrigation. To prepare for these changing conditions, studies are being conducted on the possibility of dry farmed agriculture as an alternative to irrigated production. This study specifically investigates the ability to grow productive wine grapes with limited or zero irrigation in the Boise Front Foothills, West Foothills TIC Vineyard, located in a climate zone receiving less than 300 mm of annual precipitation. Traditional vineyard performance factors such as planting densities, soil type, rootstock, …
Sophomore Field Experiences As An Introduction To The Nature Of Geosciences: Data Collection And Analysis Using Dendrochronology, David Wilkins, M. Kunkel
Sophomore Field Experiences As An Introduction To The Nature Of Geosciences: Data Collection And Analysis Using Dendrochronology, David Wilkins, M. Kunkel
David E. Wilkins
Opportunities for field experiences are often presented as a primary reason that undergraduate students gravitate towards geosciences as a major field of study. What those students may not understand is that, for professional geoscientists, field experiences go beyond the freshman-level field trip, and students may overlook the processes of observation, data collection and analysis that are inherent to the science. The Department of Geosciences at Boise State has developed a set of sophomore field experience courses designed to "set the hook" into new majors and prepare them for field experiences in upper division coursework. These sophomore courses have been shown …

El Paso Economic Development System Review & Recommendations, Edward Feser
Edward J Feser
This report, commissioned by the City of El Paso, recommends that El Paso city government undertake a substantial reform of its economic development effort and that public and private sector stakeholders in the broader El Paso region mobilize to create an organizational vehicle for the kind of public‐private collaboration that is driving innovative economic development in many other major city‐regions in the United States. The analysis also calls for a stronger integration of physical, land use, and economic development planning activities in the city and region, consistent with a trend in international best practice in local and regional economic development.
Beyond The Epsilon Band: Polygonal Modeling Of Gradation/Uncertainty In Area-Class Maps, Barry J. Kronenfeld
Beyond The Epsilon Band: Polygonal Modeling Of Gradation/Uncertainty In Area-Class Maps, Barry J. Kronenfeld
Barry J. Kronenfeld
A spatial modeling technique is proposed to represent boundary uncertainty or gradation on area-class maps using a simple polygon tessellation with designated zones of indeterminacy or transition zones. The transition zone can be conceptualized as a dual of the epsilon band, but is more flexible and allows for a wide range of polygonal configurations, including polygons with sinuous boundaries, spurs, three-way transition zones, and null polygons. The model is specified using the medial axis to capture the general shape characteristics of a transition zone. Graph theoretic representation of an extended version of the medial axis captures key junctions in both …

Insight Into Volatile Behavior At Nyamuragira Volcano (D.R. Congo, Africa) Through Olivine-Hosted Melt Inclusions, Elisabet M. Head, Alison M. Shaw, Paul J. Wallace, Kenneth W. W. Sims, Simon A. Carn
Elisabet Head
[1] We present new olivine-hosted melt inclusion volatile (H20, C02, S, Cl, F) and major element data from five historic eruptions ofNyamuragira volcano (1912, 1938, 1948, 1986, 2006). Host-olivine Mg#'s range from 71 to 84, with the exception of the 1912 sample (Mg# = 90}.lnclusion compositions extend from alkali basalts to basanite-tephritcs. Our results indicate inclusion entrapment over depths ranging from 3 to 5 km, which agree with independent estimates of magma storage depths (3-7 km) based on geophysical methods. Melt compositions derived from the 1986 and 2006 Nyamuragira tephra samples best represent pre-eruptive volatile compositions because these samples contain …

Carbon Storage And Cycling Of Reclaimed Mine Soils In Southeastern Kentucky, Alice Jones, Kelly Barber, Peter Acton, James Fox
Carbon Storage And Cycling Of Reclaimed Mine Soils In Southeastern Kentucky, Alice Jones, Kelly Barber, Peter Acton, James Fox
Alice Jones
Since the passage of the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) in 1977, the most common type of surface mine reclamation is heavy compaction followed by grass seeding. To promote better vegetative recovery after mining, the Appalachian Regional Reforestation Initiative (ARRI) promotes leaving the top four feet of fill material loose and planting a seedling mix of native hardwood trees. This study aims to quantify the effects of the resulting soil bulk densities on decomposition processes through the analysis of carbon storage and cycling in the soil column. Soil carbon storage mechanisms are divided into specific size classes/pools, each corresponding …

ABSTRACT Today, tourism industry is one of the fields that give diversity to the countries' economy. Whereas, according to investigations of the Global Tourism Organization, tourism is a key to development in many developing and less developed countries. On the other hand, a brief review of the economical planning of our (Iran's) neighbors and their general focus on tourism as one of the most important sectors of economy, further confirms the need to pay more strict attention to this competitive market. Therefore, it seems necessary to expand the tourism market of these islands and remove their deprivations via canonizing facilities …

La Praxis Del Urbanismo Neoliberal En Humedales De La Cuenca Baja Del Río Luján, Patricia Pintos
La Praxis Del Urbanismo Neoliberal En Humedales De La Cuenca Baja Del Río Luján, Patricia Pintos
Patricia Pintos
Geopolitical Mentality And The Turkish Military, Murat Yesiltas
Geopolitical Mentality And The Turkish Military, Murat Yesiltas
Murat Yesiltas
This paper is divided into three sections which are composed of define, use and practice of geopolitics in Turkey particularly in the hands of the military. In the first section, the paper interweaves the problem of meaning with the discourse of geography and geopolitics and argues that defining geopolitics by referring to the “state” rather than “normal politics” determines who can speak and shape geopolitical discourses. In the second section, rather than taking it as a static and value free naturalistic way, geopolitics is argued as a discursive practice which constructs exceptionality and uniqueness of Turkey in terms of its …

Confluence Journal Environmental Studies (CJES), Kogi State University, Nigeria
Proper coordination of transport and public facilities provision is vital to any balanced regional development strategy. The central aim of this study, therefore, is to find out what the relationship is between access to the transport network and the provision of functional indices of facility occurrence towards the distribution of social services in Lagos Island, Nigeria. In particular it seeks to find out areas that have below or above average level of facility occurrences relative to the level of accessibility. However, a pair wise correlation matrix of the eleven (11) variables employed in the index construction was carried out. The …

Some observers of the current Libyan scene wonder why the course of the country’s ongoing revolution differed so markedly, in both duration and style, from what happened in neighboring Tunisia and Egypt. The answer may lie in our understanding of Libya’s geography, equally different from its two neighbors.
Urban Climate And Challenges Of Tropical Cities, B E. Omogbai
Urban Climate And Challenges Of Tropical Cities, B E. Omogbai
Confluence Journal Environmental Studies (CJES), Kogi State University, Nigeria
This study examines the nature of urban climate, features and the challenges on the developing tropical cities in the 21st century. It argues that the use of principles of urban climate would help in providing comfortable living conditions and problem immune working environments for the inhabitants of tropical cities. The findings reveal that owing to poor environmental planning, inadequate geotechnical landscape surveys prior to the development of urban infrastructures, and non-adherence to the principles of urban climate, challenges of landscape degradation, excessive flooding of the built infrastructures, heat-island effects, and collapse of buildings have emerged. Suggested measures to avert these …

Confluence Journal Environmental Studies (CJES), Kogi State University, Nigeria
Since 1991 when it became the capital city of Abia State, Umuahia has undergone tremendous transformation in its land use and land cover due to rapid urbanization. The main materials employed for this study are a land use map (1991) and Landsat ETM+satellite image (2007) of the study area. These, combined with field survey/checks, were brought into a GIS environment using ILWIS 3.2 Academic image classification software to map the land use/land cover and to estimate the rate of urban expansion and loss of rural land at the peri-urban fringes of Umuahia between 1991 and 2007. The study revealed significant …

In these glorious days in which the Libyan people are courageously restoring their national identity and enthusiastically reshaping their future, calamities seem a trivial price to pay compared to what they expect to gain. Despite the souring of their agony to unprecedented levels, their morale remains very high as they fervently resort to a bygone era for inspiration and hope.

Science Boot Camp for Librarians was envisioned as a casual but intensive immersion event into selected scientific subjects that employ networked computing capabilities for research and collaboration. The goal of the event is to provide librarians with networking opportunities, but more importantly, to give them some of the context and ocabulary of a discipline to enable them to better engage faculty and research scientists with regard to escience. A half-day is devoted to each of three topics chosen for that year’s camp. A local faculty member provides an overview of the research area, and a second describes a single project …
