An Anthropological Investigation Of The Dynamic Human-Vervet Monkey (Chlorocebus Aethiops Sabaeus) Interface In St. Kitts, West Indies, Kerry M. Dore
An Anthropological Investigation Of The Dynamic Human-Vervet Monkey (Chlorocebus Aethiops Sabaeus) Interface In St. Kitts, West Indies, Kerry M. Dore
Theses and Dissertations
Over 350 years ago, the ecology of St. Kitts was dramatically altered by the advent of sugar cane production and the introduction of a highly adaptable, invasive animal species: the vervet monkey (Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus). This project employed both primatological and ethnoprimatological techniques to assess conflict between vervet monkeys and Kittitian farmers. Methodological tools from primatology allowed for the creation of a predictive model of monkey crop-raiding behavior. The model was highly informative about monkeys' current raiding patterns; however, viewing Kittitian farmers and vervet monkeys as interconnected through an ethnoprimatological perspective revealed the significance of history with regard to this …
Food Fight: Sharing Meals And Confronting Biopolitics In The Disciplinary City, Jeremy Sorenson
Food Fight: Sharing Meals And Confronting Biopolitics In The Disciplinary City, Jeremy Sorenson
Theses and Dissertations
This project interrogates the tensions surrounding food provision in Las Vegas, Nevada. More precisely, groups of ad hoc individuals, unaffiliated with local shelters or social service provision agencies intervene in homelessness and hunger in the city by showing up in places where homeless individuals congregate and provide food, water, basic medical sundries and companionship to those on the streets. Conversely, local officials and shelter administrators conceptualize these activities as damaging to homeless individuals and have acted to prohibit these acts of care. Engaging with key contributions in the geographic literature, I employ specific frameworks - critical poverty research, disciplinary bio- …
Landscape Ecological Analysis Of Patterns Influencing Bat Activity In Southeast Glacial Plains Of Wisconsin, Angela Leckie Jackson
Landscape Ecological Analysis Of Patterns Influencing Bat Activity In Southeast Glacial Plains Of Wisconsin, Angela Leckie Jackson
Theses and Dissertations
Nearly half of the world's bat species are threatened by anthropogenic land use. To contribute to the conservation of these cryptic mammals, it is imperative to understand bat habitat selection in human-dominated landscapes. Bat activity was calculated using active acoustic surveys conducted June and July for three years along river and lake transects in an agricultural matrix. Using multiple logistic regression and ANOVA regression tree analyses, I examined the relationship between bat activity of four species and habitat structure at multiple scales.
Aquatic features were determined to be the greatest predictor of bat activity with rivers supporting greater amount of …
Examining Spring And Autumn Phenology In A Temperate Deciduous Urban Woodlot, Rong Yu
Examining Spring And Autumn Phenology In A Temperate Deciduous Urban Woodlot, Rong Yu
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is an intensive phenological study in a temperate deciduous urban woodlot over six consecutive years (2007-2012). It explores three important topics related to spring and autumn phenology, as well as ground and remote sensing phenology. First, it examines key climatic factors influencing spring and autumn phenology by conducting phenological observations four days a week and recording daily microclimate measurements. Second, it investigates the differences in phenological responses between an urban woodlot and a rural forest by employing comparative basswood phenological data. Finally, it bridges ground visual phenology and remote sensing derived phenological changes by using the Normalized Difference …

Under the Supervision of Professor Anne Bonds
A 1994 Fannie Mae report on poverty in America identified 20 census tracts in the city of Milwaukee that had the third fastest rate of growth in poverty in the nation, behind only areas in Detroit and Los Angeles. This prompted The Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA) to initiate a redevelopment program that came to be known as Lindsay Heights. This study will ascertain what the impetus was …
Small-Area Population Estimation: An Integration Of Demographic And Geographic Techniques, Chengbin Deng
Small-Area Population Estimation: An Integration Of Demographic And Geographic Techniques, Chengbin Deng
Theses and Dissertations
Knowledge of detailed and accurate population information is essential to analyze and address a wide variety of socio-economic, political, and environmental issues and to support necessary planning practices for both public agencies and the private sector. However, such important data are generally only available once every decade through the National Census. Moreover, populations in some rapidly-developing areas may increase quickly, such that this ten-year frequency does not meet the needs of these areas. Therefore, a cost-effective method for population estimation is necessary. To address this issue, this research integrated geographic, sociological, and demographic theories and exploited remotely sensed imagery and …
Congolese Cultural Landscapes, Transnational Networks, And Identity Formation In Milwaukee, Claire Marie Reuning
Congolese Cultural Landscapes, Transnational Networks, And Identity Formation In Milwaukee, Claire Marie Reuning
Theses and Dissertations
Following national trends, between 2000 and 2010, the city of Milwaukee's foreign-born African population doubled. Previous research attributes this population growth to various socio-economic and political factors on the African continent, the United State's implementation of the Diversity Visa Lottery (DVL) program, and perceived economic opportunities. Applying a mixed methods approach, I analyze the spatial distribution of foreign-born Africans in Milwaukee County to contextualize a case study of people from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) worshipping at Milwaukee's International Lutheran Church of Zion (Zion Church). Using information gathered from participant observation, semi-structured interviews, census and demographic data, I …
Regionalization Of Hydrologic Response In The Great Lakes Basin: Considerations Of Temporal Variability, Jonathan Martin Kult
Regionalization Of Hydrologic Response In The Great Lakes Basin: Considerations Of Temporal Variability, Jonathan Martin Kult
Theses and Dissertations
Methods for predicting streamflow in areas with limited or nonexistent measures of hydrologic response commonly rely on regionalization techniques, where knowledge pertaining to gaged watersheds is transferred to ungaged watersheds. Hydrologic response indices have frequently been employed in contemporary regionalization research related to predictions in ungaged basins. In this study, regionalization models were developed using multiple linear regression and regression tree analysis to derive relationships between hydrologic response and watershed physical characteristics for 163 watersheds in the Great Lakes basin. These models provide a means for predicting runoff in ungaged basins at a monthly time step without implementation of any …
Early Summer Dissolved Oxygen Characteristics In Restored Streams In Seoul, Casey Thoenen, Woonsup Choi, Jinmu Choi
Early Summer Dissolved Oxygen Characteristics In Restored Streams In Seoul, Casey Thoenen, Woonsup Choi, Jinmu Choi
Geography Faculty Articles
Abstract : This paper presents an evaluation of stream restoration projects in Seoul with a focus on dissolved oxygen. Five test sites across four streams were measured for dissolved oxygen (DO) in late May to early June in 2012 and compared against a set of minimum and maximum thresholds. Only one test site, Hwarang-cheon, showed measurements below 6 mg/l DO. Towards the upper limit, the Hwarangcheon site was the only tested stream which was not at risk of DO supersaturation. The Danghyeon-cheon site had the highest probability of supersaturation, with DO saturation exceeding 130% expected 86.5% of the time. When …
