On the night of April 20, 2010, a group of students from the University of Puerto Rico (UPR), Río Piedras campus, met to organize an indefinite strike that quickly broadened into a defense of accessible public higher education of excellence as a fundamental right and not a privilege. Although the history of student activism in the UPR can be traced back to the early 1900s, the 2010-2011 strike will be remembered for the student activists’ use of new media technologies as resources that rapidly prompted and aided the numerous protests.

Course Syllabi

Web GIS is a special topics course designed to give students a solid foundation in Web publishing and Web GIS. By the end of the semester, students will:

  • Learn the basics of HTML5 and CSS3.
  • Learn the basics of JavaScript and JQuery
  • Produce a new layout for the Zen Garden project.
  • Participate in a crowdsourced project on King Tide Day.
  • Produce an interactive photo slideshow with HTML5/CSS3.
  • Participate in a mobile-social reporting project on Election Day.
  • Produce a multimedia map story with HTML5/CSS3.
  • Learn how to give and receive constructive criticism.

Currently, southern Louisiana faces extreme land loss that could reach an alarming rate of about one football sized swath of land every hour. The combined effect of land subsidence and predicted sea level rise threaten the culture and livelihood of the residents living in this region. As the most vulnerable coastal population in Louisiana, the communities of south Terrebonne Parish are called to adapt by accommodating, protecting, or retreating from the impacts of climate change. For effective preparation planning, the state of Louisiana needs to 1) understand the adaptation preferences and responses of these residents and 2) involve these vulnerable …
