This paper reviews mine closure practice in Australia and Canada and provides similarities, dissimilarities and common shortcomings of mine closure practice. Closure of mine with appropriate planning is a recent move as a part of sustainable mining practice and both Canada and Australia have developed requirements for mine closure process. By reviewing ten site-specific closure plans against international good practice criteria, this study finds that in general, both the countries share key requirements of mine closure; hence comply with good practice of mine closure planning. However, there are some common shortcomings of existing mining closure planning practice in Canada and …

Environment Kuznets Curve For Carbon Emissions: A Cointegration Analysis For Bangladesh, Fazle Rabbi, Delwar Akbar, Sm Zobaidul Kabir
Environment Kuznets Curve For Carbon Emissions: A Cointegration Analysis For Bangladesh, Fazle Rabbi, Delwar Akbar, Sm Zobaidul Kabir

This article investigates the current status of the association between carbon emissions releases, use of energy, openness of trade and overall output of Bangladesh from its independence to 2012. The research outcomes for Bangladesh show that a robust long-run association is present there along with short-run dynamic adjustment among those variables. The research indicates that environmental degradation in Bangladesh may increase because of high economic growth in future and therefore, policies to tackle environmental pollution are imperative where the use of both market and non-market based management tools is important. Finally, this study provides some future research directions which were …
Mainstreaming Ecosystem-Based Adaptation: Transformation Toward Sustainability In Urban Governance And Planning, Christine Wamsler
Mainstreaming Ecosystem-Based Adaptation: Transformation Toward Sustainability In Urban Governance And Planning, Christine Wamsler
Christine Wamsler
The concept of ecosystem-based adaptation is advocated at international, national, and regional levels. The concept is thought to foster sustainability transitions and is receiving increasing interest from academic and governmental bodies alike. However, there is little theory regarding the pathways for its systematic implementation. It furthermore remains unclear to what degree the concept is already applied in urban planning practice, how it is integrated into existing planning structures and processes, and what drivers exist for further integration. Against this background, this study examines potential ways to sustainably mainstream ecosystembased adaptation into urban planning. Eight municipalities in Southern Germany were investigated …

Abstract Global urbanization creates opportunities and challenges for human well-being and transition towards sustainability. Urban areas are human-environment systems that depend fundamentally on ecosystems, and thus require an understanding of the management of urban ecosystem services to ensure sustainable urban planning. The purpose of this study is to provide a systematic review of urban ecosystems services research, which addresses the combined domain of ecosystem services and urban development. We examined emerging trends and gaps in how urban ecosystem services are conceptualized inp eer-re viewed case study literature, including the geographical distribution of research, the development and use of the urban …

Appraisal Of Social And Health Impact Of A Cement Plant At Host Communities In Yandev, Nigeria, Fanan Ujoh Ph.D, Frederick Terkuma Ujoh Mr
Dr. Fanan Ujoh
Nigeria has extensive mineral and natural resources hence, developmental projects are being proposed and executed on a daily basis, many of which involve large-scale alteration of human, animal and plant ecosystems. Limestone mining and cement production commenced in 1980 at the study area, Yandev, without an environmental impact assessment to ascertain the extent of impact these activities could bring to bear on the physical and living conditions of the host environment. This study was carried out to appraise the social and health impact that mining of limestone and production of cement has inflicted on the host communities. Descriptive statistics and …

Evaluating Wetlands Along The Libyan Mediterranean Coastline, Mansour M. Elbabour, Esam O. Abdulsamad
Mansour M Elbabour
Nature conservation efforts in Libya focus mainly on the protection of some forest and wildlife areas in small designated national parks in the Jabal al-Akhdar and few other locations in the west of the country. However, wetlands did not receive equal recognition. Perhaps, lack of environmental awareness and the absence of functional and legal definitions of wetlands and their habitats in the country contributed to their exclusion from national protection programs and, consequently, to their degradation. Evaluation of wetlands, both within and outside urban areas, conducted as part of the Designation and Classification of Nature Reserves project in Libya, represents …

This article investigates the current status of the relationship between CO2 emissions, energy consumption, final output and trade openness for Bangladesh over a period of time (1972-2008). The empirical results for the case of Bangladesh suggest that there is an existence of a robust long-run relationship along with the short-run dynamic adjustment between the variables. The study indicates that high economic growth may increase environmental degradation in future and therefore, policies to tackle environmental pollution are imperative where the use of both market and non-market based management tools are important. Finally, this study provides some future research directions which are …
Pollution Control Under Emission Constraints: Switching Between Regimes, Enrico Saltari, Giuseppe Travaglini
Pollution Control Under Emission Constraints: Switching Between Regimes, Enrico Saltari, Giuseppe Travaglini
Enrico Saltari
In this paper we develop a model of pollution control. The aim of the society is to maximize the net social benefits which are negatively affected by the emission of pollutants. We show that the presence of an upper constraint on pollution growth rate affects the actual trajectory of emissions even when emissions are far below the level where the constraint binds. We get three main results. First, we find that for a society it is optimal to take into account the impact of the latent constraint at the outset of the planning horizon and to modify the emission flows …

This paper examines the current challenges in urban waste management systems under EU regulations for a newcomer state. Piatra Neamț is among the first Romanian cities which made the transition from a traditional to a modern waste management infrastructure through ISPA funds. These changes are poor reflected in rate of recyling and treatment so far according to analysis of waste streams. The paper performs a critical review of waste management services and also assesses the vulnerability to illegal dumping. Inappropriate sites of waste management facilities contribute to environmental pollution and urban landscape degradation. Comparative analysis between pre-accession period vs. current …

Determining Rural Areas Vulnerable To Illegal Dumping Using Gis Techniques. Case Study: Neamț County, Romania, Florin C. Mihai
Florin C MIHAI
The paper aims to mapping the potential vulnerable areas to illegal dumping of household waste from rural areas in the extra- Carpathian region of Neamț County. These areas are ordinary in the proximity of built-up areas and buffers areas of 1km were delimited for every locality. Based on various map layers in vector formats ( land use, rivers, buil-up areas, roads etc) an assessment method is performed to highlight the potential areas vulnerable to illegal dumping inside these buffer areas at local scale. The results are corelated to field observations and current situation of waste management systems. The maps outline …

Quantitative Assessment Of Household Waste Disposed In Floodplains Of Rivers From Extra-Carpathian Region Of Neamț County, Romania, Florin C. Mihai
Florin C MIHAI
This paper aims to develop a method which estimates the amounts of household waste disposed (HWD) by rural localities in floodplains of rivers from subcarpathian sector ( Bistrița, Cracău, Ozana) and also from coridor valleys sector of Moldova and Siret rivers. This approach takes into the consideration the average distance between the outer limits of buil-up area (village) and floodplain (river) in order to calculate the specific indicators. This method is applied for 2003 and 2010 with a view to highlight the potential impact of illegal dumping on rivers sectors from extra-Carpathian region between pre-accession and post-accession periods. Poor waste …

Interorganizational Considerations In Coastal Management: The 1976 California Legislative Experience, Herman L. Boschken
Interorganizational Considerations In Coastal Management: The 1976 California Legislative Experience, Herman L. Boschken
Herman L. Boschken
Among coastal management programs, most states have found the question of appropriate administrative structure difficult to cope with. The dilemma of decision trade-offs caused by the dual governmental needs of "efficiency" and "representation" has led to some alternative patterns of administration. For complex issues that transcend local boundaries, the choice between trade-offs means adopting either (a) some form of consolidated bureaucracy or (b) some system of concurrent jurisdictions. Both alternatives have their inherent benefits and disadvantages but, considering the degree of environmental complexity and array of competing interests involved in coastal resource use, the most appropriate administrative form would seem …
