The third and final season of Phase III data recovery at Lake Alan Henry (formerly Justiceburg Reservoir), located on the Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos River in Garza and Kent counties, Texas, was conducted during the fall of 1992. The work consisted of intensive archeological investigations at one historic site and four prehistoric sites. Subsequent to the Season 3 data recovery fieldwork, a newly discovered rock art site (41KTl64) was documented. In order to fulfill its obligations in conjunction with the proposed Jnsticeburg Reservoir project, the City of Lubbock, Texas, is considering the purchase of 2,240 acres in Garza County to serve as wildlife mitigation lands. Prior to the City's final decision to acquire the land, an archeological survey was conducted. The ca. 1,000 acres of incised canyonland and upland margin and ca. 215 acres of selected upland rises were intensively surveyed, while the remaining 1,025 acres of upland flat and low-lying areas were spot checked. Subsurface geomorphic investigations (i.e., backhoe trenching) of the uplands were also conducted. The survey resulted …

This report documents the archeological work at 62 prehistoric and aboriginal rock art sites and the geoarcheological study conducted as part of the Phase II work. Investigations at 48 prehistoric sites, including open campsites, rockshelters, lithic procurement sites, faunal localities, and rock art sites, resulted in complete National Register assessments; 9 campsites, the 2 rockshelters, and 6 rock art sites are considered to be eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. This appendix describes the stratigraphic and pedogenic characteristics of each trench excavated during subsurface geomorphic reconnaissance conducted as part of the testing phase at Justiceburg Reservoir. Seventy-seven trenches were excavated during the course of the project. The overall results and interpretations of the geomorphic phase of the investigation are presented in Chapter 4. The data presented in this appendix are based on field descriptions of the sediment columns exposed by the trenches. In 1987, Prewitt and Associates, Inc. conducted a Phase I archeological reconnaissance of the proposed Justiceburg Reservoir located in Garza and Kent counties, Texas. The investigations included a 100\ pedestrian survey, a preliminary geoarcheoloqical study, and historic archival and field research. Three hundred and seventy-five sites were documented in the ca. 8600-acre project area. Two hundred and eighty-eight sites contain prehistoric archeological components consisting of: no Paleoindian or early Archaic, 4 middle Archaic, 10 late Archaic, 10 undefined Archaic, 24 Late Prehistoric, 204 undefined prehistoric, and 45 isolated finds (total components = 252). The prehistoric site descriptions are divided into three sections: Garza County, Kent County, and Isolated Finds. All sites are described fully in a telegraphic format in order to conserve space. The descriptions are organized by county in alphabetical order and in numerical order of site within each county. Information for each site 1s organized into six headings: location, description, features, cultural materials observed/collected, shovel test data, and assessment/recommendations. The determination of the percentage of the site remaining intact is based on in-field observations of the postulated original areal extent of the site versus what is still potentially intact.
