In the spring of 1977 the Center for Archaeological Research was requested by Ronald Darner, Director of the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department, to investigate and record sections of the old acequias, or irrigation ditches which were involved in renovation and landscaping projects in city parks. The purpose of this report is to present the information gained in this endeavor ln lasting and usable form for the future benefit of historians and archaeologists working with these unique and interesting structures.

In Feburary 1977, the Center for Archaeological Research was contracted by the City of San Antonio Department of Parks and Recreation to conduct observation and limited testing in the immediate area of the Catalpa-Pershing Drainage Project in Brackenridge Park. The affected area within the park had previously been surveyed for archaeological sites by Center personnel in connection with a general historic and prehistoric survey of the park as a whole (Fox and Katz 1978) in preparation for the proposed Master Plan. The Maximilian B. Mayer House (41 BX 326) once stood' on the corner formed by King William Street, South Saint Mary's Street and Durango Boulevard (Fig. l). It was torn down about 1967, but its foundations and other subsurface structures still remain in the ground.

During March 1977, archaeologists from the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted archaeological investigations at the historic Gresser House located on the northwest corner at the intersection of South Presa and Nueva Streets in the historic district of downtown San Antonio (Fig. 1).

The investigations were designed to examine building foundation remains which were uncovered during renovation work being carried out at the Gresser House. Early in 1976 the City of San Antonio Department of Planning and Community Development requested that the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, consider undertaking archaeological and historical investigations in the Arciniega Street area of downtown San Antonio. Sale of City-owner property--including all of New City Block (NCB) 901 and portions of NCB l55--was pending, and the Planning Department was desirous of assessing the nature and degree of cultural resources prior to completing the transaction. During March and April 1978, a preliminary archaeological investigation was conducted at the historic "Dolores Aldrete House," lots 7, 8 and 9 of block 155, fronting on East Nueva Street in downtown San Antonio, Texas. Under contract with the property owners, Carol Lee Klose, Gary Mark Klose and Randall Mark Klose, and the Center for Archaeological Research, two archaeologists from the Center investigated the age, nature of construction and condition of the depth and character of cultural deposits and evaluated the archaeological potential of the site.
