(Wp 2007-03) Trade Openness, Capital Mobility, And The Sacrifice Ratio, Joseph P. Daniels, David D. Vanhoose

Economics Working Papers

This paper develops and evaluates empirically the implications of a theoretical model of an open economy in which variations in both trade openness and capital mobility can influence the sacrifice ratio. Key predictions forthcoming from the model are that both forms of globalization can independently affect the capital ratio, once the influences of the level of central bank independence and the degree of wage stickiness in nations‘ economies are taken into account. Examination of cross-country data encompassing 58 disinflations for 16 countries yields evidence consistent with these essential predictions of the theoretical framework.

Capping The Mortgage Interest Deduction, John E. Anderson, Jeffrey Clemens, Andrew Hanson Dec 2007

Capping The Mortgage Interest Deduction, John E. Anderson, Jeffrey Clemens, Andrew Hanson

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper we examine the economic implications of several policy options for capping the mortgage interest deduction (MID). We extend the standard user–cost model of owner–occupied housing to include a cap on the mortgage size receiving tax–favored status. Our user–cost estimates for taxpayers with mortgages above the current–law cap are 4.41 percent higher than estimates from a model without the cap. We simulate the share of mortgage dollars that would be subject to three alternative cap policy variants and summarize the distributional impacts of each proposal, computing the share of mortgage dollars impacted across U.S. Metropolitan Areas.

The Individual In Mainstream Health Economics: A Case Of Persona Non-Grata?, John B. Davis, Robert Mcmaster Sep 2007

The Individual In Mainstream Health Economics: A Case Of Persona Non-Grata?, John B. Davis, Robert Mcmaster

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

This paper is motivated by Davis’ [14] theory of the individual in economics. Davis’ analysis is applied to health economics, where the individual is conceived as a utility maximiser, although capable of regarding others’ welfare through interdependent utility functions. Nonetheless, this provides a restrictive and flawed account, engendering a narrow and abstract conception of care grounded in Paretian value and Cartesian analytical frames. Instead, a richer account of the socially embedded individual is advocated, which employs collective intentionality analysis. This provides a sound foundation for research into an approach to health policy that promotes health as a basic human right.

Does Financial Openness Promote Economic Integration?, Fabrizio Carmignani, Abdur Chowdhury Aug 2007

Does Financial Openness Promote Economic Integration?, Fabrizio Carmignani, Abdur Chowdhury

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

We estimate the effect of financial openness on economic integration for two clusters of countries: the formerly planned economies of Eastern Europe and central Asia (emerging market economies) and some western advanced economies. We focus on two dimensions of economic integration: convergence of per-capita incomes across countries and trade integration. We employ both single equation estimation and system estimation to account for endogenous links between trade integration and income convergence. Results show that in the cluster of emerging market economies, financial openness is a powerful instrument of economic integration. In the group of advanced economies, financial openness effectively facilitates income …

Akerlof And Kranton On Identity In Economics: Inverting The Analysis, John B. Davis May 2007

Akerlof And Kranton On Identity In Economics: Inverting The Analysis, John B. Davis

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

The concept of identity was introduced into the neoclassical utility maximising framework by Akerlof and Kranton in an analysis which draws directly from social psychology's social identity approach and self-categorisation theory. This paper examines their analysis, and compares the social identity approach and an alternative social psychology identity framework called the sociological approach to identity. Using this comparison, the paper argues that their treating identity as an argument in the utility function leaves unaddressed how individuals' different social identities are related. The paper suggests a framework for addressing this issue by embedding their utility function in a personal identity objective …

(Wp 2007-01) Openness, Income-Tax Progressivity, And Inflation, Joseph P. Daniels, David D. Vanhoose Apr 2007

(Wp 2007-01) Openness, Income-Tax Progressivity, And Inflation, Joseph P. Daniels, David D. Vanhoose

Economics Working Papers

This paper considers a model of an open economy in which the degree of income-tax progressivity influences the interaction among openness, central bank independence, and the inflation rate. Our model suggests that an increase in the progressivity of the tax system induces a smaller response in real output to a change in the price level. This implies that increased income-tax progressivity reduces the equilibrium inflation rate and that the effect of increased income-tax progressivity on inflation is smaller when the central bank places a higher weight on inflation or when there is greater openness. Examination of cross-country inflation data provides …

(Wp 2007-02) Valuing Environmental Quality: A Space-Based Strategy, John I. Carruthers, David E. Clark

Economics Working Papers

This paper develops and applies a space-based strategy for overcoming the general problem of getting at the demand for non-market goods. It focuses specifically on evaluating one form of environmental quality, distance from EPA designated environmental hazards, via the single-family housing market in the Puget Sound region of Washington State. A spatial two stage hedonic price analysis is used to: (1) estimate the marginal implicit price of distance from air release sites, hazardous waste generators, hazardous waste handlers, superfund sites, and toxic release sites; and (2) estimate a series of demand functions describing the relationship between the price of distance …

Effective Foreign Aid, Economic Integration And Subsidiarity: Lessons From Europe, Abdur Chowdhury, Paolo Garonna Jan 2007

Effective Foreign Aid, Economic Integration And Subsidiarity: Lessons From Europe, Abdur Chowdhury, Paolo Garonna

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

The paper shows that the question that is relevant for the debate on the efficacy of development assistance is not so much as an issue of how much, but rather for what. In view of the growing awareness of ODA’s inefficiency in achieving intended aims, this paper proposes an alternative approach to development assistance policies – economic integration and subsidiarity provides the conditions necessary for ODA to produce higher rates of economic growth on a sustainable basis. Europe is an excellent case in point, in this context. Europe has in the last decades experienced a number of success stories in …
