The Human And Economic Implications Of Twenty-First Century Immigration Policy, Susan Pozo Editor
The Human And Economic Implications Of Twenty-First Century Immigration Policy, Susan Pozo Editor
Upjohn Press
To effectively debate immigration policy we need to be better informed. This book helps by presenting a group of prominent scholars who use data to help unravel the facts. They address immigration’s fiscal impacts, immigrants’ generational assimilation, enhanced U.S. enforcement, and alternatives for those seeking refugee status. Together, they help move us from the personal to the analytical, providing us a rational appraisal of immigration and the policies currently before us.
Is Public Transit's 'Green' Reputation Deserved?, Justin Beaudoin
Is Public Transit's 'Green' Reputation Deserved?, Justin Beaudoin
PSU Transportation Seminars
While public transit has a reputation as a potential means to ameliorate the adverse environmental effects of automobile travel, there have been very few empirical studies of the marginal effect of transit supply on air quality. We explore whether any of the substantial improvement in air quality observed in the U.S. from 1991 to 2011 can be attributed to increased public transit supply by developing an equilibrium model of transit and automobile travel volumes as a function of the level of transit supplied. We then empirically analyze the effects of the level of transit supply on observed ambient pollution levels …

Moral Hazard And Adverse Selection In The Insurance Market, Kevin Willardsen
Moral Hazard And Adverse Selection In The Insurance Market, Kevin Willardsen
Applied Econometrics Workshops
Willardsen presented on his upcoming article with the same title. The abstract from this paper is as follows:
Understanding the relative significance of adverse selection and moral hazard is important in determining effective policy for insurance markets. Separate identification of these two effects, empirically, is difficult. To overcome this limitation, this paper uses experimental methods to examine how adverse selection and moral hazard separately affect agent performance in a real-effort task. In particular, we explore how agent behavior (effort in the task) changes across a baseline with no insurance option, a treatment where individuals can choose to purchase insurance, and …

Full Circle: Building A Local Economy Through Pollinator Enterprises In The Food System, Catherine M. Demets
Full Circle: Building A Local Economy Through Pollinator Enterprises In The Food System, Catherine M. Demets
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
As the alternative food movement gains traction in mainstream American society, it is essential to document how enterprises in the movement are building robust local economies. As Eric Holt-Giménez (2010: 1) points out, the movement “has successfully shone the spotlight on hunger and food access in the US, created a drive for more local food, and gotten better policy from the federal to the local level,” yet no assurance exists that our society’s interest in food issues is not a passing fad. Rather, we should ask: “how do we turn initial reforms into lasting food system transformation?” (Holt-Giménez 2010: 1). …
The Effectiveness Of The Commercial Driver Medical Examination In Screening For Hypertension, Yutao Li
The Effectiveness Of The Commercial Driver Medical Examination In Screening For Hypertension, Yutao Li
Undergraduate Research Symposium 2018
The Commercial Driver Medical Examination (CDME) is used to assess the medical fitness of a driver to safely operate a commercial motor vehicle. Hypertension is a disease that has been shown in prior research to cause reduced driving safety performance when not properly managed, and it is therefore important that medical examiners be able to consistently identify it in drivers. However, the CDME has historically been ineffective at screening drivers with safety-related diseases. For example, a report from the US Government Accountability Office showed the existence of a substantial number of drivers who were deemed eligible by the federal government …

The Impact Of Real Interest Rate On Real Exchange Rate: Empirical Evidence From Japan, Tomiwa Shodipe
The Impact Of Real Interest Rate On Real Exchange Rate: Empirical Evidence From Japan, Tomiwa Shodipe
2018 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity – Documents
Abstract
This paper examines the impact of real interest rate on the real exchange rate in Japan using Two Stage Least Square econometric techniques. The two instruments used are money supply and gross domestic product growth rates. The result provides support for the theoretical and empirical evidences of positive relationship between real interest rate and real exchange rate in Japan. The estimation also shows that there is positive relation between trade and Japanese Yen over the period considered in the study. In light of these findings, the study suggests the adoption of fiscal macroeconomic policy instruments that are capable of …

Willingness To Pay Student Insurance As A Primary Plan Among Eastern Illinois University Students, George Anaman
Willingness To Pay Student Insurance As A Primary Plan Among Eastern Illinois University Students, George Anaman
2018 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity – Documents
Abstract
Selecting ideal health insurance coverage entails a trade-off between the gain from risk reduction and the deadweight loss from moral hazard (Manning and Marquis, 1996). This paper investigates students’ willingness to pay for student health insurance which will serve as a primary plan. Variables such as demographics, student insurance enrollment and coverage, student insurance utilization and satisfaction were used to assess students’ Willingness to pay for student insurance as a primary plan. Both qualitative and quantitative statistics were used to explain the willingness of students to pay for student insurance as a primary plan.
International Debt Impact On The Value Of South Korean Currency, Wonjin Song
International Debt Impact On The Value Of South Korean Currency, Wonjin Song
2018 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity – Documents
Abstract
This paper will analyze how international debt for South Korea affected the value of Korean currency from 1983 to 2014 by using the Ordinary Least Square model. The result is that international debt for South Korea had a clear influence on the value of Korean Won. The exchange rate of Korean currency per US dollar moves the same direction as amounts of international debt. In other words, as the Korean Won depreciates, more Won must be spent to purchase U.S dollars. That is, Korean currency depreciates when amounts of international debt increase. As the result, Korea has not yet …

Vaule-Added Erosion In Global Value Chains: Rethining International Trade, Xiao Jiang
Vaule-Added Erosion In Global Value Chains: Rethining International Trade, Xiao Jiang
Seminars in Local and Global Regional Economies
The prevalence of "vertical specialization" and global value chains (GVCs) demands that we think differently about international trade and its relationship to employment. This talk discusses employment effects of GVCs trade. Dr. Jiang argues that the expansion of foreign high value-adding activities in the upper stream of GVCs is likely to lead to a decline of domestic value-added share, leading to intensification of international and domestic distributional conflicts.
Dr. Xiao Jiang’s research combines mathematical modeling, simulations and statistics with classical political economy. He has provided economic consulting for the International Labor Organization, the Association for East and Southeast Asian Countries, …

Supplemental Readings And Practice Problems For "What Counts And What Gets Counted", Jeremiah Bentley
Accounting Educational Materials
“What Counts and What Gets Counted” (Bloomfield 2016)[1] is an innovative way of teaching managerial accounting. The 1st edition of the book won the 2014 Jim Bulloch Award for Innovations in Management Accounting Education, and has only gotten better since then. However, the book suffers from two significant limitations. First, the book was intended primarily for MBA students, not for accounting undergrads. As a result, the book doesn’t go into sufficient depth on some of the technical topics that accounting majors need to understand. Second, the book lacks a bank of practice problems and solutions for students to …

[Chapter 1 From] Re-Examining The History Of The Russian Economy: A New Analytic Tool From Field Theory, Jeffrey K. Hass
Bookshelf
This book explores the application of field theory (patterns of interaction) to Russian economic history, and how social and political fields mediate the influences of institutions, structures, discourses and ideologies in the creation and dissemination of economic thinking, theory and practice. Using focused cases on Russia's economy from the mid-nineteenth century to the present, Hass and co-authors expand the empirical basis of field studies to provide new material on Russian economic history. The cases are divided into two complementary halves: i) The role of fields of institutions, discourses, and structures in the development of Russian economic thought, especially economic theories …
Unemployment Insurance Reform: Fixing A Broken System, Stephen A. Wandner, Editor
Unemployment Insurance Reform: Fixing A Broken System, Stephen A. Wandner, Editor
Upjohn Press
The Unemployment Insurance (UI) system is a lasting piece of the Social Security Act which was enacted in 1935. But like most things that are over 80 years old, it occasionally needs maintenance to keep it operating smoothly while keeping up with the changing demands placed upon it. However, the UI system has been ignored by policymakers for decades and, say the authors, it is broken, out of date, and badly in need of repair.
Stephen A. Wandner pulls together a group of UI researchers, each with decades of experience, who describe the weaknesses in the current system and propose …

Out-Of-Pocket Cost For Individuals Being Treated For Opioid Dependence In Rutland County, Vermont, Christopher T. Veal
Out-Of-Pocket Cost For Individuals Being Treated For Opioid Dependence In Rutland County, Vermont, Christopher T. Veal
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Each day more than 140 Americans die from drug overdoses, 91 specifically due to opioids. In Vermont, more than 50 people die each year from opioid poisoning. With insurance coverage being a critical component of Opioid Dependence Recovery, many people seeking treatment are unaware of the financial barriers to recovery- namely the out-of-pocket costs associated with treatment. This study sought to provide insight on the financial impact of Opioid Dependence Treatment on the patient, and provide financial assistance information to the Rutland County community.

Pakistan's Institutions: We Know They Matter, But How Can They Work Better?, Michael Kugelman, Ishrat Husain
Faculty Research - Books
Back in 2012, a Pakistani professor named Farakh A. Khan issued a dire warning about the state of his country’s public institutions. “Pakistan suffers from institutional failure,” he declared in an essay published about a year before his death. “Failed institutions are unable to correct the problems faced by the society and eventually lead to economic failure… If our leaders are sincere for change in Pakistan then they have to first get the institutions working again. But do they know how or have the will to do it?
