Understanding The Temporary Assistance For Needy Families' Reach Across The U.S., Alison Keenan
Understanding The Temporary Assistance For Needy Families' Reach Across The U.S., Alison Keenan
Honors Theses
One way the federal government attempts to alleviate child poverty and the associated trauma and expenses is through welfare. Cash assistance helps families make ends meet and maintain stability, reducing poverty and its effects. The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program (TANF) is one source of welfare in the United States. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the state in which a child lives matters, as TANF’s reach varies considerably across the U.S. The purpose of this thesis is to understand why some states reach more needy families than other states and to suggest policy recommendations to …
The Immigration Crisis In Italy: A Convergence Of Crises And What It Means For Globalization, Emma Salachi
The Immigration Crisis In Italy: A Convergence Of Crises And What It Means For Globalization, Emma Salachi
Honors Theses
This paper is an analysis of what is deemed the “immigration crisis” in Europe as it affects the country of Italy. Originally, I had theorized that the effects of the immigration crisis on Italy were due solely to the failings of the Schengen Agreement. However, upon further research, I concluded the problems of the Schengen are only one part of a larger picture that finds its beginnings in the economic problems of Italy. The worldwide economic crisis of 2008 and the actions of the European Central Bank in the wake of the crisis created a separation in the European Union …
Determinants Of Net Foreign Direct Investment In The Usa, Jordan Burt
Determinants Of Net Foreign Direct Investment In The Usa, Jordan Burt
Honors Theses
This paper examines whether Net Foreign Direct Investment between the USA and its major trading partners (USNFDI) is affected by US Net Competitiveness (USNC), US Net Economic Freedom (USEF) and US Net Ease of Doing Business (USNE)(*). Through the use of panel data methodology, the hypothesis that US NFDI is positively affected by USNC, USEF and USNE was tested with data from the Global Competitiveness Report (World Economic Forum), the Index of Economic Freedom (Heritage Foundation), the Ease of Doing Business Index (World Bank) and the World Fact Book (CIA). It was found that all three independent variables …
The Super Bowl's Economic Impact On Its Host City, Ashley Lockwood
The Super Bowl's Economic Impact On Its Host City, Ashley Lockwood
Honors Theses
In this paper, I am going to discuss the major differences between the sports boosters' pregame estimates compared to the economists' post game analysis. In my research, I analyze all 32 cities with an NFL team over the most recent 20 years to see if there is a significant impact on the host's economy. This research will show if increasing local taxes in order to host the game yields an increase in per capita GDP after the game. Tax payers accept higher tax rates under the impression that, after the game, their city will reap massive benefits from hosting the …
Us Net Foreign Direct Investment: Determinants And Implications, Ryan Gomez
Us Net Foreign Direct Investment: Determinants And Implications, Ryan Gomez
Honors Theses
Political campaigns always churn the political spectrum on the issue of outsourcing and international trade with the 2017 presidential primary being no exception. Are politicians, like Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump, correct when preaching the economic negatives associated with outsourcing? Are they considering the right factors? Could it be that a strictly negative outlook on outsourcing is economically inappropriate in determining future policy? In an attempt to answer these questions, this paper will critically analyze the impact of incoming and outgoing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the USA. Specifically, this study will use determinants of Net FDI (NFDI), where NFDI …
The Effect Of Distance From Nhl Affiliate On Ahl Fan Attendance, Stephen Picard
The Effect Of Distance From Nhl Affiliate On Ahl Fan Attendance, Stephen Picard
Honors Theses
This paper examines the effect of American Hockey League (AHL) teams locating closer to their National Hockey League (NHL) affiliates. With several AHL teams closing the distance (geographically) between their NHL affiliates for logistical purposes, I studied whether or not they will experience higher levels of fan support. I used data from all AHL teams between 2007 and 2017. I found a statistically insignificant negative relationship between proximity to NHL affiliate and average attendance in the AHL for all the teams. However, less popular AHL teams do experience higher levels of fan attendance when located closer to their NHL affiliate. …
An Investigation Of Renewable Energy Projects And Their Potential Applications At Assumption College: Wind Turbines And Geothermal Heat Pumps, Melanie Mccauley
An Investigation Of Renewable Energy Projects And Their Potential Applications At Assumption College: Wind Turbines And Geothermal Heat Pumps, Melanie Mccauley
Honors Theses
This thesis researches the possibility of a renewable energy project specifically for Assumption College. As the school is already investing in solar power, my study looked at the feasibility of a wind turbine or geothermal heat pump unit on the campus. I conducted interviews with various institutions that have already undertaken similar projects so that I could better understand the process of installing these technologies, to discover possible funding that could be available, and the success of this technology in other schools. The economic advantages and the positive impacts on students and the neighboring communities were some of the benefits …
