Essays On Worker Promotion And Wage Growth, Hugh Cassidy Nov 2013

Essays On Worker Promotion And Wage Growth, Hugh Cassidy

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis consists of three chapters in the field of labor economics related to worker promotion, hierarchical levels, and wage growth.

Chapter two examines the impact of the skill requirements of an occupation on the likelihood that a worker receives a promotion. Promotion data are taken from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979, while skill requirements data come from the Dictionary of Occupational Titles. I find that the higher the cognitive skill requirement of an occupation, and the lower the motor and strength skill requirements, the higher the probability that the worker receives a promotion. Introducing skill requirements reduces …

Valuation Of The Peterborough Prison Social Impact Bond, Majid Hasan Sep 2013

Valuation Of The Peterborough Prison Social Impact Bond, Majid Hasan

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The Peterborough Prison Bond is a social impact bond (SIB) that was issued by the UK government to reduce recidivism rate in the Peterborough prison. Most of the literature on the SIB so far has been focused on the opportunities, challenges, and the related policy issues (see (Fox), (Strickland), and (Disley)), and little effort has been made to provide a mathematical framework to determine a fair price for such instruments. Here, we aim to provide a pricing framework for the bond. We price the bond both from the issuer's and the buyer's perspective, by adjusting for the bond's risk, ambiguity, …

A Free Exchange E-Marketplace For Digital Services, Wafa M. I. Ghonaim Aug 2013

A Free Exchange E-Marketplace For Digital Services, Wafa M. I. Ghonaim

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The digital era is witnessing a remarkable evolution of digital services. While the prospects are countless, the e-marketplaces of digital services are encountering inherent game-theoretic and computational challenges that restrict the rational choices of bidders. Our work examines the limited bidding scope and the inefficiencies of present exchange e-marketplaces. To meet challenges, a free exchange e-marketplace is proposed that follows the free market economy. The free exchange model includes a new bidding language and a double auction mechanism. The rule-based bidding language enables the flexible expression of preferences and strategic conduct. The bidding message holds the attribute-valuations and bidding rules …

Essays On Mechanism Design And The Informed Principal Problem, Nicholas C. Bedard Aug 2013

Essays On Mechanism Design And The Informed Principal Problem, Nicholas C. Bedard

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Three models of a privately informed contract designer (a principal) are examined. In the first, I study how much private information the principal wants to acquire before offering a contract to an agent. Despite allowing her to acquire all information for free, I prove in a general environment that there is a nontrivial set of parameters for which it is strictly suboptimal for the principal to be completely informed, regardless of the continuation equilibrium following any information acquisition choice. This result holds even when the principal is able to employ the most general mechanisms available and, in particular, when she …

Essays On Skilled Workers And Economic Development, Dozie Okoye Aug 2013

Essays On Skilled Workers And Economic Development, Dozie Okoye

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis consists of three chapters on skilled workers and the roles they play in economic development. In the first chapter, I use an overlapping generations model of education choice and skilled migration to study conditions under which a low-skill economy can grow its skilled labor force in the presence of skilled emigration. This occurs when skill premiums are low, and there are individuals in the economy who can afford an education. The model is calibrated to data on 23 low and middle-income countries. For 22 of the 23 countries, any increase in the rate of skilled emigration leads to …

Abortion And Crime In Canada: A Test Of The Bmdl Hypothesis, Timothy Kang May 2013

Abortion And Crime In Canada: A Test Of The Bmdl Hypothesis, Timothy Kang

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Donohue and Levitt (2001) argued that the legalization of abortion in the US during the 1970s contributed to 50 percent of the dramatic decline in crime that occurred in the 1990s. Although a lengthy debate in the literature has proliferated and remains inconclusive, this controversial theory has been popularized by the Freakonomics (2005) franchise. The liberalization of abortion services that occurred in Canada in 1988 offers an improved focal intervention to perform an empirical test of this theory. The methods that have emerged from the debate are reviewed. The most promising strategies, namely time-series plots of crime, “effective abortion rate” …

Issues In The Analysis Of Inequality, Michael R. Smith May 2013

Issues In The Analysis Of Inequality, Michael R. Smith

Population Change and Lifecourse Strategic Knowledge Cluster Discussion Paper Series/ Un Réseau stratégique de connaissances Changements de population et parcours de vie Document de travail

In spite of data and methodological challenges, research has largely reached the conclusion that earnings inequality has risen in Canada, the US and elsewhere, and that the rise has been mainly driven by large increases at the top of the earnings distribution. Researchers offer two competing explanations for causes of the rising inequality: (1) innovations in information and communication technologies, and (2) institutional changes such as the freezing of the minimum wage, decline in unionization, and the spread of performance-related pay increases. Inequality is influenced by changes in population composition, specifically, the size of cohorts entering the labour market, and …

News, Copulas And Independence, Ivan Medovikov Apr 2013

News, Copulas And Independence, Ivan Medovikov

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This dissertation contributes to the theory and the applications of copulas to problems in economics, econometrics and finance. The second chapter proposes a new measure of macroeconomic news which is termed the "Macroeconomic News Index". Using the copula approach, new findings about the relationship between macroeconomic news and the stock markets are revealed. The third chapter aims to improve the existing non-parametric copula-based tests for stochastic independence. It provides an extension to the test statistic of Kojadinovic and Holmes (2009), which is obtained through the introduction of a weighted functional norm. The addition of the weights creates a channel through …

Essays In Macroeconomics Of Development, Douwere Eric Grekou Apr 2013

Essays In Macroeconomics Of Development, Douwere Eric Grekou

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis consists of three chapters on macroeconomics of development. The first chapter discusses the impact of educational corruption on economic development. Its main contribution lies in quantifying two channels of educational corruption: a direct channel, whereby incompetent workers affect production due to a misallocation of talent, and a dynamic indirect channel, which can be referred to as a teacher’s effect on the availability of competent agents for production. The results suggest that, for the countries with the highest levels of educational corruption, the losses in output per capita induced by the indirect channel are ten times as large as …
