The Cost-Effectiveness Of Combination Treatment Consisting Of Either Cetuximab Or Panitumumab Plus Folfiri Versus Treatment With Bevacizumab Plus Folfiri As First-Line Treatment For Kras Wild-Type Metastatic Colorectal Cancer Patients In Ontario, Emmanuel M.G. Ewara Oct 2012

Ewara

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

I conducted a cost-effectiveness analysis of combination cetuximbab or panitumumab plus FOLFIRI as first-line treatment for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (MCRC) from the perspective of the Ontario healthcare payer. I developed a Markov decision analytical model to simulate the lifetime costs and benefits of each treatment option. The model was parameterized using data collected from administrative databases in the province of Ontario and from published clinical trials. In the base case scenario, treatment consisting of bevacizumab plus FOLFIRI was found to dominate other treatment options. The ICER values were found to be sensitive to the efficacy of first-line treatment, …

Preliminary Economic Evaluation Of Brentuximab Vedotin In Relapsed And Refractory Hodgkin Lymphoma: An "Early Look" Model Based On Phase Ii Results, Vusal Babashov Jun 2012

Preliminary Economic Evaluation Of Brentuximab Vedotin In Relapsed And Refractory Hodgkin Lymphoma: An "Early Look" Model Based On Phase Ii Results, Vusal Babashov

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

We conducted a cost-effectiveness analysis of brentuximab vedotin for the treatment of relapsed and refractory Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL) from health care system perspective in Canada. We developed a Markov decision analytical model to simulate lifetime costs and benefits and parameterized the model using brentuximab phase II clinical trial and cd-link data which is a linked datasets of cancer registry with administrative databases of Ontario, Canada. In the base case scenario, brentuximab treatment led to an increase of 0.352 Quality Adjusted Life Years (QALYs) per person and $108,500 per person, which resulted in incremental cost effectiveness ratio (ICER) of $308,532 per …

From The Gas Pump To Our Hips: The Impact That U.S. Corn-Ethanol Production Has On America's Obesity Epidemic, Scott Reddy Jun 2012

From The Gas Pump To Our Hips: The Impact That U.S. Corn-Ethanol Production Has On America's Obesity Epidemic, Scott Reddy

Honors Theses

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect that increased U.S. corn-ethanol production has on food prices and, in turn, the diet choices of the U.S. population. Previous literature has confirmed the linkages between the energy market and the corn market and has separately examined the relationship between relative food prices and obesity. The purpose of this study is to link ethanol production to obesity. The first two sections of the model will utilize various econometric techniques to test the existence of certain empirical relationships over the period of January 1982-May 2011. The final stage will employ ordinary …

Do Cigarette Taxes Make Smokers Happier Than Nonsmokers?, Mark Chaskes Jun 2012

Do Cigarette Taxes Make Smokers Happier Than Nonsmokers?, Mark Chaskes

Honors Theses

Public health advocates justify cigarette taxes, claiming they discourage smoking, which results in a healthier population. However, the more pertinent issue with which health advocates should be concerned is that of smoker well‐being. In this paper, I investigate whether cigarette taxes make smokers relatively more satisfied than nonsmokers. Additionally, because poor smokers have a higher discount rate than wealthy smokers, and therefore, perceive the tax differently, I explore the effect that income, in conjunction with a cigarette tax increase, has on smokers’ life‐satisfaction. Using cross‐sectional and time‐series data from the 2005‐2010 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey, this paper utilizes …

Does Being Cultured Pay? Racial And Language Concordance And Its Effect On Physician Income, Nayan Patel Jun 2012

Does Being Cultured Pay? Racial And Language Concordance And Its Effect On Physician Income, Nayan Patel

Honors Theses

Issues surrounding race and ethnicity in healthcare have increased in number as racial disparities as well as minority physicians become more prevalent in the USA. One such issue is the concordance rate of race and language amongst physicians and their patients. The effect of racial concordance in physician patient relationships has been looked at to determine if it affects the perceived level of health quality. Saha et al. (1999) found that Black and Hispanic patients were more satisfied in their healthcare when treated by a physician of their own race. In this study, I establish whether or not the racial …

The Closure Of New Orleans' Charity Hospital After Hurricane Katrina: A Case Of Disaster Capitalism, Kenneth Brad Ott

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

Amidst the worst disaster to impact a major U.S. city in one hundred years, New Orleans’ main trauma and safety net medical center, the Reverend Avery C. Charity’s administrative operator, Louisiana State University (LSU), ordered an end to its attempted reopening by its workers and U.S. military personnel in the weeks following the August 29, 2005 storm. Drawing upon rigorous review of literature and an exhaustive analysis of primary and secondary data, this case study found that Charity Hospital was closed as a result of disaster capitalism. Arsenic Contamination In Groundwater In Vietnam: An Overview And Analysis Of The Historical, Cultural, Economic, And Political Parameters In The Success Of Various Mitigation Options, Thuy M. Ly

Pomona Senior Theses

Although arsenic is naturally present in the environment, 99% of human exposure to arsenic is through ingestion. Throughout history, arsenic is known as “the king of poisons”; it is mutagenic, carcinogenic, and teratogenic. Even in smaller concentrations, it accumulates in the body and takes decades before any physical symptoms of arsenic poisoning shows. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the safe concentration of arsenic in drinking water is 10 µg/L. However, this limit is often times ignored until it is decades too late and people begin showing symptoms of having been poisoned.

This is the current situation for Vietnam, …

An Examination Of The Effects Of Medicare Part D On Racial/Ethnic Disparities, Elham Mahmoudi Jan 2012

An Examination Of The Effects Of Medicare Part D On Racial/Ethnic Disparities, Elham Mahmoudi

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation seeks to evaluate whether Medicare Part D has reduced racial/ethnic disparities in prescription drug utilization and spending among Medicare seniors. Using nationally representative data on White, African-American, and Hispanic Medicare seniors from the 2002-2009 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, this dissertation analyzes eight measures of access and utilization related to prescription medications. This dissertation applies the Institute of Medicine's definition of a racial/ethnic disparity, and adopts a difference-in-differences quasi-experimental design, using a multivariate regression framework. It finds strong evidence that Medicare Part D reduced ethnic disparities in prescription drug use, total prescription drug cost, out-of-pocket prescription drug cost, and …
