Alleviating Global Poverty Through Profitable Partnerships: Moral Imagination & Economic Well-Being, Laura Hartman, P. Werhane, D. Moberg, S. Kelley

While at least one out of six in the global human population cannot meet the basic demands of survival and they have little ability to buy goods and services, this situation also presents potential new markets for multinational enterprises seeking long-term sustainability. If economic growth is a continuing and positive goal for the planet and for global companies, then, as markets in developed economies become saturated, these new markets provide fresh opportunities to satisfy this objective.

Systemic Analysis Of Social Scientists Policy Research And Economic Reforms In Nigeria, Sikir Abdulsalam
Systemic Analysis Of Social Scientists Policy Research And Economic Reforms In Nigeria, Sikir Abdulsalam
Sikiru Abidemi Abdulsalam
Despite numerous policy research institutes, organizations and social research in Nigeria, social outputs seem to have contributed little to policy articulation and formulation process. This feeble interface between knowledge base and policy formulation reduces the latter to a subject of intuitive judgment. This paper uses a schematic analysis approach to examine the relationship between policy space, social scientist and economy performance in Nigeria. The paper found that the input of policy research which should necessarily underscore economic reforms is inadequate and not effective. These adverse weaknesses are assumed to have substantiated the economic downtrodden in Nigeria. We recommend that the …
The Exchange Rate And Fiscal Consolidation Episodes In Emerging Market Economies, John Thornton, Amine Mati
The Exchange Rate And Fiscal Consolidation Episodes In Emerging Market Economies, John Thornton, Amine Mati
John Thornton
An analysis of fiscal consolidations in emerging market economies during 1970–2004 suggests that exchange rate depreciation raises the probability of a fiscal consolidation being successful, including when controlling for debt, growth, the composition of the consolidation, and degree of democracy.

International Capital Mobility: Evidence From Panel Cointegration Tests, John Thornton, Olumuyiwa S. Adedeji
International Capital Mobility: Evidence From Panel Cointegration Tests, John Thornton, Olumuyiwa S. Adedeji
John Thornton
Panel cointegration techniques applied to pooled data for 50 developed and developing economies for the period 1970–2000 indicate that savings and investment are non-stationary and cointegrated, that there are marked differences in saving–retention ratios between different country groups, and that retention ratios have fallen.
Fiscal Institutions And The Relation Between Central And Sub-National Government Fiscal Balances, John Thornton
Fiscal Institutions And The Relation Between Central And Sub-National Government Fiscal Balances, John Thornton
John Thornton
Skeptics of fiscal decentralization argue that it can complicate fiscal stabilization policies at the level of the central government because of uncoordinated fiscal actions by the national and sub-national tiers of government. However, panel data estimates for OECD economies suggest that this danger has been overstated in that changes in the fiscal balances of central and sub-national governments are highly positively correlated. This result partly reflects the success of institutional arrangements that govern intergovernmental fiscal relations and appears unrelated to the extent of fiscal decentralization.
Inflation And Inflation Uncertainty In Argentina, 1810–2005, John Thornton
Inflation And Inflation Uncertainty In Argentina, 1810–2005, John Thornton
John Thornton
Unit root tests results suggest that inflation in Argentina for the period 1810–2005 is a stationary series when account is taken of structural breaks that coincide with bouts of hyperinflation. A GARCH (1,1) model of annual inflation suggests a positive short-run relation between the mean and variance of inflation, supporting Friedman's hypothesis that high inflation is associated with more variable inflation.

Modes, Weighted Modes, And Calibrated Modes: Evidence Of Clustering Using Modality Tests, Daniel Henderson, Christopher Parmeter, R. Russell
Modes, Weighted Modes, And Calibrated Modes: Evidence Of Clustering Using Modality Tests, Daniel Henderson, Christopher Parmeter, R. Russell
Christopher F. Parmeter
We apply recent results from the statistics literature to test for multimodality of worldwide distributions of several (unweighted and population-weighted) measures of labor productivity. Specifically, we employ Silverman (Bump) and Dip modality tests, calibrated to correct for their incorrect asymptotic levels. We show that test results are sensitive to the test statistic employed and to population weighting. But regardless of the statistical criterion used, multimodality is present throughout, or emerges during, our sample period (1960–2000). We also examine (a) movements of economies between modal clusters and (b) relationships between certain key development factors and multimodality of the productivity distribution.

Fertility And The Health Of Children: An Application Of A Nonparametric Conditional Late Estimator, Daniel Henderson, Daniel Millimet, Christopher Parmeter, Le Wang
Christopher F. Parmeter
Although the theoretical trade-off between the quantity and quality of children is well established, empirical evidence supporting such a causal relationship is limited. This chapter applies a recently developed nonparametric estimator of the conditional local average treatment effect to assess the sensitivity of the quantity-quality trade-off to functional form and parametric assumptions. Using data from the Indonesia Family Life Survey and controlling for potential endogeneity of fertility, we find mixed evidence supporting the trade-off.
Heterogeneity In Smoker Preferences For Increased Efficacy Of Cessation Therapies, Robert Paterson, Kevin Boyle, Christopher Parmeter, James Neumann, Paul De Civita
Heterogeneity In Smoker Preferences For Increased Efficacy Of Cessation Therapies, Robert Paterson, Kevin Boyle, Christopher Parmeter, James Neumann, Paul De Civita
Christopher F. Parmeter
Promoting cessation is a cornerstone of tobacco control efforts by public-health agencies. Economic information to support cessation programs has generally emphasized cost-effectiveness or the impact of cigarette pricing and smoking restrictions on quit rates. In contrast, this study provides empirical estimates of smoker preferences for increased efficacy and other attributes of smoking cessation therapies (SCTs). Choice data were collected through a national survey of Canadian smokers. We find systematic preference heterogeneity for therapy types and SCT attributes between light and heavy smokers, as well as random heterogeneity using random parameters logit models. Preference heterogeneity is greatest between length of use …

The Effect Of Measurement Error On The Shape Of The World Distribution Of Income, Christopher Parmeter
Christopher F. Parmeter
This note examines the robustness that two modes exist in the world's density of per capita income. Our results suggest that this bimodal feature is robust and are arrived at using recently developed nonparametric deconvolution techniques.
Doing What You Say, Robert D. Cooter
Doing What You Say, Robert D. Cooter
Robert Cooter
Making wealth requires people to do what they say. In relationships and repeat transactions, reciprocity makes people do what they say, even without contract law. Relationships and repeat transactions, however, preclude competition. Competition involving transactions with strangers invigorates an economy and enables it to flourish. Making strangers do what they say requires them to commit legally. According to the contract principle for economic cooperation, the law should enable people to commit to doing what they say. When this principle is implemented, strangers can trust each other enough to work together even when money is at stake. Implementing this principle requires …

Comparative Capitalism And Sustainable Development: Stakeholder Capitalism And Co-Management In The Kenyan Fisheries Sub Sector, Cosmas Milton Obote Ochieng Ochieng
Cosmas Milton Obote Ochieng Ochieng
This paper argues that stakeholder capitalism is more appropriate to natural resource management and rural development in Africa than other varieties of capitalism. It examines different management arrangements in Kenyan Lake Victoria fisheries resources to argue that whilst stakeholder capitalism is still far from being the mainstream model of capitalism in Kenya, theoretically and empirically, it is more appropriate to sustainable development than the Anglo-Saxon variety of capitalism that the country inherited from its British colonizers. The paper demonstrates that the concepts of ownership and management rights are social, economic and political constructs that are continuously contested, with huge implications …

Ferrying Across The Flood: The Ethics Of The Dhamma-Vinyana As The Basis Of Buddhist Development Theory And Practice, Sam Grey
Sam Grey
Buddhist development theory and practice establishes that it is possible to deliberately ground theoretical and actual socio-economic change in clear normative principles, joining the inwardly-oriented realm of personal morality and the outwardly-oriented realm of ethical social engagement. Further, it reveals the sought-after link between theory and practice, the element that gives rise to consistency, to be ethics, which “translate thought into action, world views into movements” (Merchant, 1992, p.62). In Buddhist development theory and practice, as in Buddhist ethics, intention is carried forward to consequence in a clear, ‘mappable’ fashion, so that that the fruits of any goal, strategy, or …
Historical Roots, Contemporary Relevance: Explaining The Persistence Of Polygyny In Sub-Saharan Africa, Sam Grey
Sam Grey
Despite the pervasive belief that monogamous marriage and the nuclear family are natural or inevitable features of modernity, many other nuptial and household forms exist. Polygyny – simultaneous marriage to multiple wives – is one such form. Today, widespread polygyny is virtually a sub-Saharan African phenomenon, and it perseveres here in the face of rapid, ostensibly antipathetic, socio-economic change. Predictions that development and modernization would obliterate traditional kinship systems in sub-Saharan Africa remain unrealized because they fail to appreciate that polygyny is not merely a historical relic or cultural idiosyncrasy, but a rational, internally consistent strategy that enables both individuals …

A Clashing Viewpoint Concerning India: A Critique Of Goldman Sachs 2007 Report, Aniruddha Bagchi, Ashok Roy
Aniruddha Bagchi
The centerpiece of the 2007 Report by Goldman Sachs is the prediction of India’s phenomenal economic growth and power in the next few decades. In this article we critique the conceptual validity of that prognosis. In particular, we highlight several hard and soft infrastructure impediments to India’s emergence as a major economic power.

Firm Size And Innovation In European Manufacturing, Mario Pianta, Andrea Vaona
Mario Pianta
The paper investigates the differences between small, medium-sized and large firms regarding their performance in the introduction of new products and processes. After a review of the relevant literature, two models are proposed and tested in search for different business strategies and innovation inputs connected to product and process innovations. The empirical analysis uses innovation survey (CIS 2) data at the industry level for 22 manufacturing sectors, broken down in three firm size classes, for eight European countries. Special attention is devoted to tackling the issues of possible endogeneity of the regressors and of unobserved sectoral heterogeneity. The results – …
