Redefining Wellness And Self-Care For Students From Diverse Backgrounds, Angela M. Yoder, Amina Feder, Kelsey Boll Oct 2022

Redefining Wellness And Self-Care For Students From Diverse Backgrounds, Angela M. Yoder, Amina Feder, Kelsey Boll

Together We RISE (Making Excellence Inclusive)

The COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with unprecedented medical and mental health problems which have disproportionately affected those in young adulthood and those from disenfranchised and underrepresented communities (Tai et al., 2021). Creative expression activities have historically assisted individuals in addressing self-care in a way that provides opportunities for externalization and containment of uncontrollable problems (e.g. trauma, violence, consequences of systemic oppression, abuse) (Thomas & Morris, 2017). Although the promotion of self-care now occurs in many universities, few students have well-developed self-care plans (Stalnaker-Shofner et al, 2021). Creative expression self-care activities that incorporate concepts of self-compassion, emotional regulation, mindfulness, boundaries, …

Counseling For Psychosocial Stress Factors Associated With Hearning Loss, Emily Mcmaster

Scholars Day Conference

Audiologists play a major role in helping people with hearing loss learn how to better communicate and how to connect to the world around them. The purpose of this project investigates the extent to which audiologists counsel their clients for the psychosocial stress factors caused by hearing loss, along with determining the extent in which patients with hearing loss feel they would benefit from counseling services implemented into their appointments. In addition to psychosocial stress factors, the thesis will analyze the extent to which clients are educated on their hearing loss and given practical ways to adjust to their loss …

Bereaved Parents And Art Therapy: A Process To Help Develop Positive Adjustment Post-Loss, Dishika Iyer

2022 Student Academic Showcase

Death and bereavement are a sad part of human existence; a child’s death, however, could be incredibly isolating, debilitating, and terrifying for parents. Art therapy has proven helpful in dealing with several challenges like depression, stress, and post-traumatic stress disorder (Hass-Cohen et al., 2018; Kalmanowitz & Ho, 2017; Peterson & Goldber, 2016). However, no studies to date show the impact of art therapy as an intervention with bereaved parents. The purpose of this proposal is to suggest a quantitative study to examine if art therapy could help bereaved parents in positive adjustment post-loss of their child. Positive adjustment post-loss would …

School Counseling At Cedar Falls High School, Chloe Thostenson

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

This semester, I had the opportunity to intern with a school counselor at Cedar Falls High to gain insight into how mental health programs function and how they are applied by the team. I have learned therapy techniques, created yearly mental health reports to foresee trends, and have helped support the students’ emotional and academic needs. This poster exemplifies how sleep is strongly linked with depression and attendance in school, the various programs and plans that Cedar Falls High School offers, and how this experience has aided in creating additional future career goals for me.

Student-Athletes And Mental Health - A Case Study On How Uni Can Meet The Unique Needs Within Athletics [Poster], Samantha Bennett

Research in the Capitol

My research concerns the mental health of collegiate level student-athletes, whomst [sic] national data suggests experience greater stress and mental strain than non-athletes. My work sets out to confirm whether UNI’s student-athletes are also in line with this trend of higher stress levels by surveying this population, and subsequently to propose solutions for addressing the discrepancy in mental distress levels. I have been studying solutions employed by other universities, both public and private institutions and of varying enrollment size, to meet the mental health needs of their athletics population. I am using this research to consider the different forms a …
