Review Of The Par Concussion App For Smartphones, Susan Davies, T. Sullivan, Sara Timms
Susan C. Davies
There has been an explosion in the number of health-related smartphone applications, or apps, available for download. These products nowinclude apps concerning concussion. From April to August 2011, at least seven concussion-related apps were released. The primary focus of these apps is assessment at the time of injury. One exception to this trend is Psychological Assessment Resources' (PAR) Concussion Recognition & Response: Coach & Parent Version.
PAR's Concussion Recognition & Response app provides a checklist of concussion signs/symptoms designed to help coaches and parents determine whether to remove a child from play and seek medical attention. Unlike its competitors, the …

The Shared Experiences Of Counselors Who Practice In Natural Environments, Bonnie King
The Shared Experiences Of Counselors Who Practice In Natural Environments, Bonnie King
Bonnie King
The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study was to gain a deep understanding of the shared experiences of therapists who provide counseling in non-traditional, natural environment settings. Eight participants shared their experiences about counseling in nature. The primary research question for this study was: What are the shared experiences of counselors who provide nature-based counseling? A review of the literature of nature-based counseling provided benefits to spending time in nature, descriptions of various types of nature-based counseling, and ethical and legal issues that affect nature-based counselors. Semi-structured interviews comprised of open-ended questions were used to collect data by phone and …

Healing Through Movement: The Benefits Of Belly Dance For Gendered Victimization, Angela Moe
Healing Through Movement: The Benefits Of Belly Dance For Gendered Victimization, Angela Moe
Angela M. Moe
Perceptions of “belly dance” are that it is degrading, exploitive, and incongruous to feminism. Curiously, however, the dance is incredibly popular in various parts of the world, including the United States, as a form of recreation and creative expression. This paper examines the apparent disconnect between public perception and practitioner standpoint. Findings indicate a strong holistic healing component, particularly in terms of gendered interpersonal victimization, where belly dance seems to hold potential for self-exploration and discovery. Grounded historically, culturally and empirically, these findings are discussed in terms of their application to social work practice as it relates to alternative therapies.

An Examination Of Community College Black Male Student Athletes’ Perceptions Of Student Support Services And Identifying Methods For Improving Service Delivery, Dr. Charles W. Richburg Iii
Dr. Charles W. Richburg III
Abstract Black male student athletes' enrolled in community colleges are a vastly understudied population. Statistically, the success rate of earning an associate degree and transferring to a four year institution of higher education is dismal. The focus of this study was to capture the perceptions of Black male student athletes and student support services providers as they pertained to access, use, and delivery of services. Another focus of this study was to identify ways in which Black male student athletes and student support services providers could help to improve delivery of those services. Participants for this study included three Black …

The Emerging New Human Being, The Culture-In-The-Self, And Ahp's New Multidimensional Intercultural Initiative, Carroy U. Ferguson
Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.
The emerging New Human Being will need to explore and come to terms with a phenomenon, operating deeply, uniquely, and diversely at a core level of all human beings on the planet. I call this phenomenon the “culture-in-the-Self,” a term coined some years ago by cofounders of Interculture Inc. What we commonly think of as culture is just the surface of this phenomenon, often appearing outwardly in the diverse “forms” of cultural scripts, beliefs, values, behaviors, and customs). I want to call attention to what goes on beneath surface culture(s), and how AHP intends to play a primary role in …
