As part of my internship at the Harrisburg Area YMCA, I designed a social media dashboard for their four branches to use. This tool lays out social media post ideas and sample content for the 2016 year. Topics included are YMCA affiliated holidays and events as well as national holidays. Whether someone is standing too close when conversing or an unexpected kiss because it is someone else’s cultural norm, expectancy violations happen often. Expectancy Violation Theory understands communication as an exchange of content that violates another person’s expectations. This violation is then perceived by the violated person as either good or bad. Understanding the different aspects of this theory will shed light on how people react when their expectations have been violated. To understand this theory this essay will describe Burgoon’s understanding of expectancy and violation, as well as give an example of an expectation violation.

During my time at Messiah College, I spent two semesters working as an Intern/Reporter within the Athletic Communications office. My responsibilities included taking photos and videos, and also writing game recaps for several different teams. In addition, I was also responsible for controlling the livestreams of several different sporting events on GoMessiah.TV. During my time here, I gained experience with Final Cut Pro, Adobe InDesign, and iMovie Maker to edit videos and photography and to create game guides. These publications allowed to me exhibit my skill in conducting and summarizing in-person interviews, as well as enhance my writing abilities.
