Are Television News Programs Becoming Nothing More Than Infotainment?, Nicole Morell
Senior Honors Projects
The money driven, have-it-done-by-yesterday world Americans live in takes no prisoners, and television news is certainly no exception. Driven by profits and struggling to keep up with the busy American with a short attention span and even shorter amount of free time, it seems broadcast television news programs have resorted to a man bites dog, blood and guts, celebrity format. In order to get down to the real story …

The Portrayal Of Powerful Women In The Media, Kristin Milligan
The Portrayal Of Powerful Women In The Media, Kristin Milligan
Honors Projects in Communication
The purpose of this research is to investigate the portrayal of powerful women in the media and to gain a perspective of different ways the media tend to elaborate and focus on gender issues to a greater extent than the general public may think. I intend to demonstrate that powerful women are often portrayed unfairly in the media and that this could affect the progress they make in their careers. I hypothesize that although women are making strides in the right direction, the often negative portrayal of powerful women in the media can be unwarranted and lead to the unfair …

Trophy Children Don’T Smile: Fashion Advertisements For Designer Children’S Clothing In Cookie Magazine, Chris Boulton
Trophy Children Don’T Smile: Fashion Advertisements For Designer Children’S Clothing In Cookie Magazine, Chris Boulton
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
This study examines print advertising from Cookie, an up-scale American parenting magazine for affluent mothers. The ads include seven designer clothing brands: Rocawear, Baby Phat, Ralph Lauren, Diesel, Kenneth Cole, Sean John, and DKNY. When considered within the context of their adult equivalents, the ads for the children’s lines often created a prolepsis—or flash-forward—by depicting the child model as a nascent adult. This was accomplished in three ways. First, the children’s ads typically contained structural continuities such as logo, set design, and color scheme that helped reinforce their relationship with the adult brand. Second, most of the ads place the …
Maximizing Masculinity: A Textual Analysis Of Maxim Magazine, Kirsten Wisneski
Maximizing Masculinity: A Textual Analysis Of Maxim Magazine, Kirsten Wisneski
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
