Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Parkinson’s Disease (PD) are neurodegenerative disorders of the aging population characterized by the abnormal accumulation of alpha-synuclein (alpha-syn). Previous studies have suggested that excitotoxicity may contribute to neurodegeneration in these disorders, however the underlying mechanisms and their relationship to alpha-syn remain unclear. For this study we proposed that accumulation of alpha-syn might result in alterations in metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluR), particularly mGluR5 which has been linked to deficits in murine models of PD. In this context, levels of mGluR5 were analyzed in the brains of PD and DLB human cases and alpha-syn transgenic (tg) …
Abstinence-Only Sexual Education, Tessa Libby
Abstinence-Only Sexual Education, Tessa Libby
Fresh Voices: Composition at Cal Poly
In “Abstinence-Only Sexual Education,” Tessa Libby uses a substantial amount of evidence to support her strong, central claim: “Due to abstinence-only sexual education, teens today are naïve concerning the truth about sexual activity and, in turn, they are unprepared to face the consequences.” Think about your experiences with sexual education in the classroom—did you have similar or different experiences? Examine the evidence used by Libby and discuss how it is introduced and analyzed— are her sources supporting her points in the most effective manner? Identify the moments when each rhetorical appeal (ethos, pathos, logos) manifests itself in the essay. Locate …
A Phan On Phish: Live Improvised Music In Five Performative Commitments, Jnan A. Blau
A Phan On Phish: Live Improvised Music In Five Performative Commitments, Jnan A. Blau
Communication Studies
Explored as a series of five interrelated performative commitments, the author takes seriously the notion that live musical performance, especially when it is pervaded by an improvisational ethos, can be quite powerful and well worth close examination. In particular, the band Phish, with its devout subcultural following of “phans,” is mined as a rich site for critical, theoretical, and descriptive fodder. The author writes as both a phan and a scholar, drawing from his own experiences seeing Phish live on many occasions as well as from an interdisciplinary body of scholarly literature. The essay provides insight not only into the …

The Need For Effective Visual Communication: How Website Design Can Further The Success Of The Cal Poly Women’S Lacrosse Team, Bonnie J. Burtis
Journalism
This paper argues that an efficient and successfully built website is crucial to the future success of college sports websites. By focusing on the Cal Poly Women’s Lacrosse team and its website, visual communication research gives insight into what works and what does not. The fundamental and design elements examined include: text elements, site navigation, accessible links, presence of news, communication and graphics (visual design). These are the elements that promote success and efficiency. Compared to other websites built and maintained by teams in the women’s lacrosse league, Cal Poly’s lacks foundational website material. General website research proves this and …

Major Trends In Gravure Printed Electronics, Donna Ariel Clark
Major Trends In Gravure Printed Electronics, Donna Ariel Clark
Graphic Communication
Printing has become a mature industry, forcing printers to create new applications for their manufacturing process. One such application is printed electronics. The gravure printing process allows for incredible speed and exceptional quality for traditional graphic printing. Theoretically, this would be an ideal method for the commercial production of printed electronics. This study analyzes gravure’s capabilities to produce a uniform conductive ink line and what to expect in the future of gravure printed electronics. Printed line properties such as line widening and scalloped edges were determined to impede gravure’s ability to lay down a conductive ink line. Best results were …

Labeling Disability In America, Nicole C. Webster
Labeling Disability In America, Nicole C. Webster
Communication Studies
This paper explores how labels are used in regard to disabilities in the dominant American culture. Ignorance is the link between language and discrimination and inequalities for people with disabilities. Americans can be educated through disability studies so as to become capable of empathizing with and enabling, rather than disabling, their compatriots.

Preaching, Prosperity, And Product Sales: A Profile Of On-Demand Digital Audio Offerings Of Christian Renewalist Ministries, Douglas J. Swanson
Journalism
In the United States alone, millions of listeners tune in to Internet-based audio-on-demand (commonly known as podcast programming). Religious programming is among the fastest-growing podcast areas. Since studies show that evangelicals are known to be quick to adopt new technology, this research involved a content analysis of 67 podcast episodes produced by five well-known renewalist evangelical ministries. The study found most podcasts were not original in content and were not consistently available for listeners to download. Also, the podcasts had poorer production values than would be expected from broadcast programming. A frame analysis identified ministries' justification of religious messages, listener …

Learning Sustainable Development: Chimeneas De La Esperanza, Miriam V. Mollan Gundersen
Social Sciences
Social inequality and environmental degradation are motivating informed young people into action and connecting impoverished regions of the world with students in more developed nations. This Social Sciences senior project is to analyze an alternative development model designed by a group of Californian university students. The project, named Chimeneas de la Esperanza, is designed to help impoverished Nicaraguan women start a ceramics business. The major hurdle of this mission is to establish a market for the ceramics product. Energy efficient ceramic stoves and smoke ventilating chimneys would benefit the community and avoid an impacted crafts market. The project encompasses ideas …

Feminist Criticism: The Importance Of Sharing The Native Female Journey, Michelle Newfield
Feminist Criticism: The Importance Of Sharing The Native Female Journey, Michelle Newfield
Communication Studies
The female Native American perspective is grossly neglected in mainstream media. Sadly, stereotypical images romanticize Native American women in a light that disallows them to be taken seriously in a modernized world. The fact is that the majority of women with American Indian ancestry do not live on reservations; they make up a considerable part of the general population.
There is an unfortunate “invisibility of Native women in comparison to men,” and “Native women are often represented by popular culture within the Plains Indian context, the generic Indian. Omnipresent is the ‘squaw’ who is portrayed as servant, concubine, beast of …
