Multimodal Communication Support For Word Recognition And Literacy In Children With Language Delays, Mackenzie Elizabeth Beal

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

As the definition of being literate transforms from being able to read and write to being able to decipher a variety of mediums (e.g., music, text emojis, and more!), it is necessary that curriculum is adapted to reflect these changes. This paper discusses 11 preschoolers aged 4 to 6 years with language delays and their ability to recognize one-syllable words. Two different interventions assessed word recognition. One intervention paired gestures with five words. The second intervention had participants create self-interpreted drawings for each of the remaining five words. To determine whether or not gestures and drawing were effective literacy strategies, …

Exploring Bottled Water Purchase Intention Via Trust In Advertising, Product Knowledge, Consumer Beliefs And Theory Of Reasoned Action, Carolyn A. Lin, Xiaowen Xu

Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication

As the bottled water market is projected to grow continuously worldwide, so is the plastic waste that pollutes the environment. The beverage industry’s marketing campaigns have played an important role in sustaining the popularity of bottled water. Social science theory-based empirical research examining how consumers make bottled water consumption decisions remains limited. To help fill this literature gap, the current study tested a conceptual framework to explore the influence of trust in bottled water advertising and perceived product knowledge on consumer beliefs about bottled water, in conjunction with theory of reasoned action. The study surveyed a sample of college students …

Environmental Organizations’ Litigation Communication In The Polarized U.S. Political Landscape, Rachel Anderle Jan 2018

Environmental Organizations’ Litigation Communication In The Polarized U.S. Political Landscape, Rachel Anderle

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

This study analyzes environmental litigation communication in an increasingly polarized political context. Specifically, this project analyzes environmental organizations’ communication strategies and messages related to their litigation efforts in order to better understand how environmental nonprofits frame environmental litigation within the current U. S. political landscape. Multiple data sources (e.g., website content, tweets, and interviews) triangulate the study by providing varying strategic perspectives on organizations’ environmental litigation communication efforts. Results show that nonprofit organizations like the National Resources Defense Council and Sierra Club use a variety of frames that portray litigation as a righteous action used to hold those in power …

Effects Of Gesture On Recollection And Description Of Auditory And Visual Stimuli, Mary Kate Richards

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

This study examined whether gesture impacts recollection of auditory and visual stimuli. In two experiments, adults were presented with visual images or auditory recordings describing dynamic scenes. After participating in a distraction task, the adults were asked to recall the stimuli they saw or heard in the scenes. In the first experiment, half of the participants were able to gesture naturally when recalling; the others were prohibited from gesturing. Because of the first study’s results, a second study was designed to test how gesture is impacted in different conversational types. In the second study, all participants were able to gesture …

The Effect Of Music Syntax Therapy On Speech Production In People With Aphasia, Brandi Kordes Jan 2018

The Effect Of Music Syntax Therapy On Speech Production In People With Aphasia, Brandi Kordes

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Music is often thought to have medicinal or therapeutic properties across a wide variety of disciplines. The purpose of this study was to determine whether pairing linguistic phrases with the same structure, or syntax, of music affects the speech production of individuals with non-fluent aphasia. Prior to any intervention, four individuals with non-fluent aphasia were assessed to determine mean length of utterance and syntactic complexity in everyday (formulaic) phrases and less-frequently used (non-formulaic) phrases. They were also given a pre-test designed to measure their understanding of music syntax. They then received three one-hour sessions of linguistic syntax therapy and three …

Perception Of Emotion In Music In Adults With Cochlear Implants, Delainey Spragg

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Music is an integral aspect of culture that is uniquely tied to our emotions. Previous studies have shown that hearing loss and cochlear implantation have deleterious effects on music and emotion perception, particularly cues related to pitch, melody, and mode. The purpose of this study is to examine acoustic cues that adults with cochlear implants and adults with normal hearing might use to perceive emotion in music (e.g., tempo and pitch range). One adult (ages 18-50 years) with a cochlear implant and 15 adults who have normal hearing were tested. The participants listened to a series of 40 melodies which …
