In 2008 the Maritime Research Division (MRD) of the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of South Carolina received a National Park Service American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP) grant to study the naval operations at Charleston Harbor during the American Civil War. Funds from the ABPP grant allowed the MRD to undertake historical research and archeological investigations on cultural resources remaining on the Charleston Harbor Naval Battlefield, the scene of a protracted struggle from 1861 to 1865 between Confederate defenders and Federal attackers. “… Unto Seynte Paules”: Anglican Landscapes And Colonialism In South Carolina, Kimberly Sue Pyszka
Doctoral Dissertations
This study examines the role of the Anglican Church in early colonial South Carolina, using for case studies the sites of St. Paul’s Parish Church (1707) and its associated parsonage, located near Charleston, South Carolina. The combination of archaeological excavations, historical documentary research, material culture analysis, and geophysical testing allows for three broad topics to be discussed - the architecture of St. Paul’s Parish Church, the use of the landscape by the Anglican Church, and studies of early-18th century life within a developing frontier. These topics contribute new information about colonial South Carolina on a number of scales. At …

Finding Historic Shipwrecks In The Dynamic Coastal Environment Of Winyah Bay: A Geoarchaeological Approach, Christopher F. Amer
Presentations
This presentation discusses a collaborative research project between the University of South Carolina’s South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology-Maritime Research Division, the College of Charleston, and Coastal Carolina University’s Marine Science Department, interfacing historic coastal zone paleoreconstructions with an archaeological marine remote sensing survey to locate, assess, identify, and conduct preliminary documentation of the Spanish Capitana. The Capitana, one of six vessels used in a failed settlement attempt by the Spanish Crown to gain a foothold in the New World, was lost in 1526 when it grounded and sank approaching Winyah Bay, South Carolina.

Clovis Blade Technology At The Topper Site (38al23): Assessing Lithic Attribute Variation And Regional Patterns Of Technological Organization, Douglas A. Sain
Clovis Blade Technology At The Topper Site (38al23): Assessing Lithic Attribute Variation And Regional Patterns Of Technological Organization, Douglas A. Sain
Occasional Papers – Southeastern Paleoamerican Survey
This monograph, by Douglas A. Sain, is based on his master’s thesis research on the organization of Clovis blade technology. This second monograph of the Occasional Papers series of the Southeastern Paleoamerican Survey closely follows the first in terms of the meticulousness of the study, and the new information it provides about the Topper Site. Detailed studies of Clovis material are eagerly sought by Paleoindian archaeologists, enthusiasts, and particularly by lithic analysts. Sain provides a well-rounded literature review for these groups, and an innovative approach to identifying technological blades. The “mixed assemblage” problem resulting when multiple lithic technologies were used …

South Carolina Naval Wreck Survey, Christopher F. Amer
Presentations
From 1998 through 2003, the Maritime Research Division (MRD) of the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology (SCIAA) at the University of South Carolina (USC) conducted research into the presence of US Navy shipwrecks in South Carolina waters. The US Navy claimed 96 shipwrecks in the state. However, historical research confirmed that, in fact, only 47 Navy-owned vessels met their demise in state waters. The remaining shipwrecks include, US Army transports, vessels owned by the Confederacy at the time of their sinking, and a number of vessels that flew foreign flags. The United States Navy maintained a presence in South Carolina …

Seeking Status: Low Socioeconomic Status Pattering At Mont Repose Plantation, Jasper County, South Carolina, Marsha Katherine Welch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Throughout the last 12 years, research and excavations have been ongoing at Mont Repose Plantation in Coosawhatchie, South Carolina. Previous research hasfocused on two areas of the plantation, while other areas have been excavated, yet left unstudied. One of the areas needing more study is the N870 block, first opened during the 2000 field season, and hypothesized to include a slave cabin. In order to investigate this claim the present researcher directed an extension of the N870 block during the 2011 field season to assess the area and determine if it was, in fact, a slave cabin. By conducting a …
