The Ukrainian Immigrant Experience In South Carolina, Nataliya S. Vykhovanets, Alexander Lorenz

University of South Carolina Upstate Student Research Journal

The following paper focuses on the Ukrainian immigrant community living in the Upstate region of South Carolina and the vast differences in immigrant experiences of former and more recent Ukrainian Immigrants. Ukrainians have been migrating to the US since the late 1800s, but unfortunately, there are few studies available on this ethnic group.

To give readers a background on the topic, this paper first documents the history of Ukrainian immigration to the US by describing and comparing the four waves of Ukrainian migration to the United States. The following section introduces a questionnaire, created to collect data on the Ukrainian …

Yellowing The Logarithm: How Money Solved The Problem Of Freedom, Neil S. Agarwal

This dissertation is on the historical development of a co-constitutive relationship between money as the form of appearance of value and race as the form of appearance of human difference. It demonstrates this relationship through a study of experiments with monetary value in eighteenth-century British America. At a time when Bank of England notes circulated primarily among merchants and within London, colonial freeholders issued paper currencies through representative assemblies and posited a link between this enterprise and the well-being of a larger provincial community within which their bills would circulate. Finding aid only for Folklife Archives Collection FA 747. This collection contains materials relating to a wide array of folklife subjects collected by folklorist Bob Gates for the Kentucky Folklife Program. The majority of the subjects include ethnic or cultural groups, but there is also various information relating to specific arts or traditions. The materials within the folders are mostly articles or copies of articles. Most folders contain information that relates directly to Kentucky, but some are about the topic more in general terms. To Settle Is To Conquer: Spaniards, Native Americans, And The Colonization Of Santa Elena In Sixteenth-Century Florida, Karen Lynn Paar

Sixteenth-century Spaniards believed that “to settle is to conquer,” and they brought this tradition established during the Reconquest of the Iberian peninsula from the Moors to their conquest and colonization of the Americas. The Spaniards’ multi-faceted approach to settlement proved remarkably enduring as shown by the mid-1560s effort of Pedro Menendez de Aviles to claim La Florida, which then included much of the present-day southeastern United States. Within this territory Santa Elena, now known as Parris Island, South Carolina, came into the focus of French and Spanish monarchs as the political and religious battles raging in Europe in the mid-sixteenth …
