Sexual-Economic Entanglement: A Feminist Ethnography Of Migrant Sex Work Spaces In Kenya, Megan Lowthers
Sexual-Economic Entanglement: A Feminist Ethnography Of Migrant Sex Work Spaces In Kenya, Megan Lowthers
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The recent anti-trafficking fervour as well as the moral panic surrounding prostitution has given rise to large gaps within migrant sex work research, especially in Africa. Despite this, sexual commerce remains a viable economic activity for many women in East Africa, a region where variable migration patterns are central to everyday social, cultural, and economic life. Framed by anthropology, feminist geography, and postcolonial theory, this research examines migrant female sex workers’ everyday experiences across time, space, place, and scale from one ethnographic location in Naivasha, Kenya. In order to explore how different migration patterns and types of sexual-economic exchange are …

Chancay Style Textiles In The Canadian Museum Of History, Beheshteh M. Asil
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis is a study of a collection of 202 ancient Andean objects in the Canadian Museum of History (CMH). These artifacts are from the Central Coast of Peru and are associated with the Chancay culture of the Late Intermediate Period (A.D. 1000-1476). The aim of this research project is to help document the general technical and stylistic characteristics of Chancay weaving and potentially help narrow down the origin of some of the fabrics under study. The main objectives of this thesis are 1) to document the technical and aesthetic characteristics of the CMH fabrics and 2) to compare this …
"Last On The Warpath": The Spirit And Intent Of Action Anthropology, Joshua J. Smith
"Last On The Warpath": The Spirit And Intent Of Action Anthropology, Joshua J. Smith
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Led by anthropologist Sol Tax, action anthropologists endeavoured, between the 1940s and 1970s, to challenge the liberal imperialist and settler colonial paradigm of Post-WWII applied anthropology, the termination policy of the 1950s, and the neo-evolutionary theories, such as Julian Steward’s multilinear evolution, that bolstered racist-colonial myths of assimilation. Several projects of emphasis include The Fort Berthold Removal Project, The American Indian Chicago Centre, A mapping project called The North American Indians: 1950 Distribution of Descendants of the Aboriginal Population of Alaska, Canada and the United States, and the American Indian Chicago Conference . In addition to Sol Tax, …
Situating The Pot And Potter: Ceramic Production And Use At The Silvercreek Sites, Two Early-Late Woodland Sites In Elgin County, Ontario, Katelyn E. Mather
Situating The Pot And Potter: Ceramic Production And Use At The Silvercreek Sites, Two Early-Late Woodland Sites In Elgin County, Ontario, Katelyn E. Mather
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This study examines the pottery from two archaeological sites that date to the beginning of the early Late Woodland period. In order to understand the production and use of ceramic vessels at the sites, a wide range of ceramic attributes are recorded and analyzed. A second component of the research is to understand the settlement patterns at the site, in order to determine how space was organized at the sites. Through these analyses, I situate these sites within the wider context of southwestern Ontario in the 11th century A.D. I adopt a ‘communities of practice’ approach, and conclude that …
Practice Makes Projectiles: Genesse Biface Technology In Southern Ontario, Kaitlyn C.M. Malleau
Practice Makes Projectiles: Genesse Biface Technology In Southern Ontario, Kaitlyn C.M. Malleau
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
In this study I investigate the lithic technology practice communities of what is now southwestern Ontario between 3800 and 3400 B.P., the latter part of the period dubbed “the Broad Point Archaic.” I seek to propose historical processes by which Genesee bifaces might have entered Ontario, and how they were used by past First Nations peoples. I observe both the form (using qualitative and metric traits) and use-wear (using macroscopic diagnostic impact fractures) of Genesee bifaces from seven sites located in southwestern Ontario: Davidson, Sadler, Desjardins, Parkhill, Brodie, R&K, and Hamilton Golf Course. The evidence suggests Genesee bifaces were used …
The Use Of Point Pattern Analysis In Archaeology: Some Methods And Applications, James R. Keron
The Use Of Point Pattern Analysis In Archaeology: Some Methods And Applications, James R. Keron
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This study explores a field of spatial statistics known as Point Pattern Analysis (PPA) and its application in archaeology. The overall goal is to provide a resource which will guide and assist the reader in the proper application of PPA. Past archaeological applications are combined with more recent geographical and statistical mathematics to create a more inter-disciplinary, synthesized approach. Included are a discussion of analytical methods and two detailed case studies/applications. The study begins with an overview of PPA approaches in archaeology, starting with a general introduction and several commonly understood concepts such as first and second order effects and …
To Walk About As They Pleaseth: An Exploratory Study Of Limb Treatment And Positioning In Ancient Egyptian Mummies, Hallie Tennant
To Walk About As They Pleaseth: An Exploratory Study Of Limb Treatment And Positioning In Ancient Egyptian Mummies, Hallie Tennant
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This study examines evidence of limb manipulation and positioning in a sample of eighty one (n=81) Egyptian human mummies archived in the IMPACT radiological database housed at The University of Western Ontario. The purpose of this research is to expand upon the existing research on the positioning of the arms and hands in Egyptian mummies (cf. Gray, 1972) to include the lower body in order to shed light on how the embalming process altered the legs and feet. The results of this study demonstrate that some aspects of lower body positioning vary across time periods in conjunction with other stylistic …

Conduits Of Communion: Monstrous Affections In Algonquin Traditional Territory, Ian S.G. Puppe
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This project investigates the legacies of shifting land tenure and stewardship practices on what is now known as the Ottawa Valley watershed (referred to as the Kitchissippi by the Omamawinini or Algonquin people), and the effects that this central colonization project has had on issues of identity and Nationalism on Canadians, diversely identified as settler-colonists of European or at least “Old World” descent and First Nations, Métis and Inuit (Lawrence 2012).
Focusing on historical and contemporary political and social issues related to Algonquin Provincial Park and its establishment, this project explores; 1) Competing claims levied by First Nations Peoples, local …
Identification Of Ancient Maya Agriculture In The Periphery Of Motul De San José, Alexandra E. Smofsky
Identification Of Ancient Maya Agriculture In The Periphery Of Motul De San José, Alexandra E. Smofsky
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Agricultural systems were investigated in the Motul de San José periphery, an ancient Maya polity in Guatemala, using soil geochemical techniques. The δ13C values of soil organic matter delineated areas of ancient maize agriculture at the satellite center of Kante’t’u’ul. A new method to locate areas of former cacao cultivation or processing was developed using HPLC to detect theobromine, an alkaloid of the cacao plant, preserved in soils. Extraction of spiked soils revealed that theobromine adsorption is inversely correlated with organic matter content of soils. Detection of naturally occurring theobromine was successful, demonstrating its utility as a tracer. …
Mining, Resistance And Livelihood In Rural Bangladesh, Md Rashedul Alam
Mining, Resistance And Livelihood In Rural Bangladesh, Md Rashedul Alam
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
In 2006, over fifty thousand people in the Phulbari Sub-District of Bangladesh mobilized against an open-pit coal mining-project that posed serious environmental and social risks. The state authorities negotiated with the protesters intensively over four days to reach an agreement. However, the state failed to fulfill the agreement, and the protest movement continued. The agrarian communities successfully halted the mining project for the last nine years. My research aims to understand how the protesters resisted this project. My objectives have been to explore the practices of a grassroots movement, attendant transformations in the sociopolitical landscape and role of the state …
Reconstructing Subsistence Practices Of Southwestern Ontario Late Woodland Peoples (A.D. 900-1600) Using Stable Isotopic Analyses Of Faunal Material, Zoe H. Morris
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Stable carbon–, nitrogen–, and oxygen–isotope analyses of animal bones and teeth from 28 archaeological sites are used to reconstruct human subsistence behaviour, i.e., increased maize horticulturalism, during the Late Woodland period (A.D. 1000–1650) in southwestern Ontario. The isotopic data provided dietary, seasonal, and geographic information, which was analysed within archaeological, symbolic, and ecological contexts and used to reconstruct the diets, hunting patterns, and animal processing practices of two neighbouring groups, the Ontario Iroquoian and Western Basin peoples.
Paleodietary and seasonality analyses focused on the following species: canids (domestic dogs, foxes, and wolves), wild turkeys and white-tailed deer, though additional fauna …

Virú And Moche Textiles On The North Coast Of Peru During The Early Intermediate Period: Material Culture, Domestic Traditions And Elite Fashions, Flannery K. Surette
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This dissertation is a contribution to a regional understanding of the textile traditions in the context of the Virú and Moche cultural landscapes of the Early Intermediate Period (200 BC-AD 800) on the north coast of Peru. This work documents the textiles of the Virú Valley, describing the characteristic materials, techniques and motifs used by the weavers associated with the Virú polity, drawing upon recent excavations and those of the early 20th century. Examples of contemporaneous Moche textiles were collected from the literature as a point of comparison in order to explore the notion of cultural boundaries as defined by …
Teaching Restless Bodies: Teachers’ Negotiations Of Adhd In Sarnia, Ontario, Patrick Galler
Teaching Restless Bodies: Teachers’ Negotiations Of Adhd In Sarnia, Ontario, Patrick Galler
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has come to be a way of being a person. In practical activities, concepts from various scientific paradigms come to be embodied. The categorical, yet historically transient, 'reality' of ADHD emerges from people's use of the classification to organize experiences of the behaviours, emotions and drugs associated with the category. This thesis explores how a group of teachers and principals from Sarnia, Ontario make sense of their role in the medicalization of childhood behaviours in relation to the classification ADHD. Previous studies have examined the perspectives of patients, parents, and physicians regarding ADHD, but despite depictions of …

Ritual Violence And Times Of Transition: A Bioarchaeological Analysis Of Burials From Huaca Santa Clara And Huaca Gallinazo In The Virú Valley, Peru, Rebecca A. Dillon
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis is a bioarchaeological analysis of ritual violence in the Virú Valley, Peru in two periods: the Virú Period and the Tomaval Period, with a focus on examining the effects of socio-political times of transition on patterns of ritual violence. In the pre-Columbian Andes, there were several periods of socio-political transition that greatly affected the populations living on the north coast of Peru. One such period was the Middle Horizon (A.D. 800 – 1100), with the increasing influence of Huari and Tiwanaku, and with the later rise of Chimor (A.D. 1100 – 1550) and Sicán (A.D. 800 – 1350) …
Understanding Early Woodland Meadowood Complex Settlement Patterns In Southwestern Ontario, Lara Wood
Understanding Early Woodland Meadowood Complex Settlement Patterns In Southwestern Ontario, Lara Wood
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Although recent work has been completed on the extensive Meadowood Interaction Sphere across the Northeast, little research has been done on the settlement-subsistence patterns of Meadowood complex peoples in southern Ontario. Much of the information necessary for interpreting the pattern has been extracted by CRM excavations and is not widely accessible. This research involves an analysis of the southern Ontario Meadowood settlement system based on information from several recently excavated Meadowood complex sites in the Thames, Credit, and Grand River watersheds, complemented by additional Meadowood data from the Ontario Archaeological Sites Database. Sites in the Thames and Credit watersheds appear …
Constructing ‘Farmer’ And ‘State’ Identities In Moral Discourses About Semi-Subsistence Agriculture In North-East Brazil, Karen E. Pennesi
Constructing ‘Farmer’ And ‘State’ Identities In Moral Discourses About Semi-Subsistence Agriculture In North-East Brazil, Karen E. Pennesi
Anthropology Publications
Anthropological analysis elucidates how discourses about agriculture in one North-east Brazilian community reflect relational roles of citizens and the state, the position of farmers in society, and the relationship of individuals to their work. In these discourses, farmers are positioned as moral, hard-working, autonomous citizens, justifying their participation in low-paying activities. The declining numbers of agricultural workers is explained as a result of individual laziness or government irresponsibility. In using these discourses to take stances publicly on agricultural issues, speakers assign responsibilities and moral status to agents. In constructing rural identities, such moral discourses emphasise the symbolic value of subsistence …
