A Comparison Of Late Prehistoric Dallas And Overhill Cherokee Subsistence Strategies In The Little Tennessee River Valley, Arthur E. Bogan Dec 1980

A Comparison Of Late Prehistoric Dallas And Overhill Cherokee Subsistence Strategies In The Little Tennessee River Valley, Arthur E. Bogan

Doctoral Dissertations

This study examines the late Mississippian Dallas Focus and historic Overhill Cherokee occupations at the archaeological site of Toqua (4OMR6), Monroe County, Tennessee. The faunal remains from the Dallas occupation were subdivided according to two mounds and four village areas to test propositions relevant to the patterning of faunal remains from a chiefdom level society. These propositions were generated from the archaeological correlates of chiefdoms proposed by Peebles and Kuss. The distribution of faunal remains were examined from the floors of two domestic and one special function structures, and it was possible to establish regular patterns of refuse accumulation. The …

An Assessment Of Anthropology In The Elementary Social Studies Curriculum In Tennessee, Denise Shannon Woodhall Wilkinson Dec 1980

An Assessment Of Anthropology In The Elementary Social Studies Curriculum In Tennessee, Denise Shannon Woodhall Wilkinson

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which anthropology is presently included in public elementary schools in Tennessee and to identify factors which tend to favor or disfavor its inclusion. Six factors were proposed as being likely influences determining whether or not anthropology is taught in Tennessee's public elementary schools. A questionnaire was devised in relation to these six factors and was sent to 302 randomly selected elementary schools across the state.

Of the 302 questionnaires which were sent, 163 (54%) were returned and analyzed. It was determined that 62% of those teachers in the sample …

Patterns Of Protein-Energy Malnutrition Among Preschoolers In Belize, Carol Lynn Jenkins Aug 1980

Patterns Of Protein-Energy Malnutrition Among Preschoolers In Belize, Carol Lynn Jenkins

Doctoral Dissertations

This study is based on a survey to assess nutritional status among children from birth through 5 years old in Belize, Central America. The survey was conducted in 1979 in two districts, one coastal (Stann Creek) and one inland (Cayo). Four major ethnic groups are represented: the Mestizo, Maya, Creole and Garifuna (Black Carib). Previous studies indicated that early childhood malnutrition is a considerable public health problem in Belize. No anthropometric assessment of protein-energy malnutrition among preschoolers had been conducted. In this project 750 children were measured and their mothers interviewed concerning the feeding patterns and health status of their …

Anthropology And The Public Schools: A Study Of The Use Of Anthropological Concepts In Junior High School Geography Courses In Tennessee, David W. Denny Aug 1980

Anthropology And The Public Schools: A Study Of The Use Of Anthropological Concepts In Junior High School Geography Courses In Tennessee, David W. Denny

Masters Theses

This study deals with the presence and use of anthropological concepts in seventh grade geography courses in Tennessee public schools. The goals of the thesis were to determine the nature of the anthropological concepts incorporated into the textbooks of seventh grade geography courses in the state for the past twenty-five years, to assess active seventh grade geography teachers' attitudes toward and use of those anthropological concepts, and then to make suggestions on how to improve the use of anthropology in public schools in the state.

The goals were achieved by two methods. First, the textbooks recommended for use by the …

An Analysis Of The Functional Significance And Sexual Dimorphism Of The Neandertal Mastoid Process, Terry Stewert Zobeck Aug 1980

An Analysis Of The Functional Significance And Sexual Dimorphism Of The Neandertal Mastoid Process, Terry Stewert Zobeck

Masters Theses

This study examines the functional significance and sexual dimorphism of the Neandertal mastoid process. The mastoid process is identified as a part of the Posterior Cranial Complex which includes the nuchal and occipital planes, and a portion of the basicranium as well as the mastoid region of the temporal bone.

In order to draw conclusions regarding the functional significance and sexual dimorphism of the mastoid process, a number of multivariate statistical techniques are applied to a modern human sample; the Larson Site Arikara.

The examination of the morphological features of the Neandertal posterior cranial vault (a relatively long, low and …

The Occurrence And Interpretation Of Trauma At The Larson Site, 39ww2, Walworth County, South Dakota, Lynn Meredith Deitrick Aug 1980

The Occurrence And Interpretation Of Trauma At The Larson Site, 39ww2, Walworth County, South Dakota, Lynn Meredith Deitrick

Masters Theses

Traumatic injury is one of the most common forms of pathology seen in skeletal collections. Because of its frequent occurrence and the types of behavior, such as warfare, athletics, and accidents, that cause these injuries, trauma is a useful indicator of the kinds of behavior of a study group.

The purpose of this research was to examine the skeletons from the Larson (39WW2) site cemetery and village in an attempt to determine the kinds of behavior patterns suggested by the traumatic injuries present in the samples.

A brief review of the demography of the Larson collections, age and sex determination …

Prehistoric Human Populations And Resource Utilization In Kachemak Bay, Gulf Of Alaska, John Edward Lobdell Jun 1980

Prehistoric Human Populations And Resource Utilization In Kachemak Bay, Gulf Of Alaska, John Edward Lobdell

Doctoral Dissertations

The prehistory of Kachemak Bay, Gulf of Alaska, was reflected in the rich bioarchaeological and zooarchaeological components. The human skeletal remains provided a base for determinations of population affinities, demographic profiles, and pathologic investigations. Closely related are the nutritional resource remains that indicated the animal species utilized, reliance on selected resources, seasonality of procurement, and the periods of nutritional insufficiency.

Human osteological data indicated an Eskimoid stock with closest relationships to North Pacific Eskimo groups. Population profiles are conditioned by a high child mortality rate, but long life spans, at least in females, were realized. Other than a remarkable case …

The Skeletal Biology Of The Caddo Indians Of The Kaufman-Williams Site, Red River County, Texas, Carol Jackson Loveland Jun 1980

The Skeletal Biology Of The Caddo Indians Of The Kaufman-Williams Site, Red River County, Texas, Carol Jackson Loveland

Doctoral Dissertations

A comprehensive biological analysis of the skeletal remains from the Kaufman-Williams site, 41RR16, Red River County, Texas, was conducted. The primary purpose of the investigation was to expand our knowledge about the biological variability found among the prehistoric Caddo. Cranial and postcranial measurements were taken, and indices were calculated. Several non-metrical characters were observed. The health status of the group was assessed based upon the pathological conditions noted in the bones. Cranial deformation was studied in detail, particularly its effect on craniofacial measurements.

A further analysis attempted to relate the skeletal material from the Kaufman-Williams site to Caddoan skeletal samples …

The Aaron Shelton Site (40cf69): A Multicomponent Site In The Lower Normandy Reservoir, Mark J. Wagner Jun 1980

The Aaron Shelton Site (40cf69): A Multicomponent Site In The Lower Normandy Reservoir, Mark J. Wagner

Masters Theses

The Aaron Shelton site (40CF69) was a multicomponent site in the upper Duck Valley which was excavated by The University of Tennessee in early summer of 1975. A total of fifty-five features and sixty postholes was excavated at the site with four cultural components, Late Archaic through Late Woodland, being defined. An analysis and description of all prehistoric cultural activity at the Aaron Shelton site are presented with an emphasis on the McFarland phase occupation. The McFarland phase settlement patterns at 40CF69 indicate that during the early Middle Woodland period the Aaron Shelton site was occupied by minimal, probably nuclear, …

Prehistoric Soapstone Procurement In Northwestern South Carolina, Terry Andrew Ferguson Jun 1980

Prehistoric Soapstone Procurement In Northwestern South Carolina, Terry Andrew Ferguson

Masters Theses

During 1978 and 1979 an archeological survey was conducted near Spartanburg, South Carolina in an area containing an extensive zone of soapstone deposits from which soapstone was prehistorically quarried. The study area encompassed approximately 16 km2 east of the city of Spartanburg, north of the town of Pacolet and along the Pacolet River. The study located 18 prehistoric soapstone quarries and 17 non-quarry sites. Previous soapstone research has suggested several hypothetical quarrying procedures and reduction sequences. A generalized reduction sequence model for soapstone vessel manufacture based on these suggested procedures was utilized to evaluate the data recovered during the …

The data were also examined for age, sex, and degree of Indian blood effects.

Differences between the Cherokee and Blacks and Whites from the HES sample were tested by a Bonferroni Post Hoc examination of means. There were no significant differences for height, but …

Fluctuating Dental Asymmetry And Stress At The Averbuch Site (40dv60), Nashville, Tennessee, Mark F. Guagliardo Mar 1980

Fluctuating Dental Asymmetry And Stress At The Averbuch Site (40dv60), Nashville, Tennessee, Mark F. Guagliardo

Masters Theses

There may exist bilateral asymmetry in tooth size in which neither side tends to be larger within a population. Such a bilaterally random distribution of asymmetry is called fluctuating dental asymmetry. One of its major causes is the exposure of individuals to stress during the time of tooth formation. Stressors known to increase fluctuating dental asymmetry are protein deficiency, heat, cold, and noise; there are probably many others as yet undiscovered.

This study explores the patterns of fluctuating dental asymmetry at the Averbuch site, a Mississippian village and three cemeteries near Nashville, Tennessee. The effects of tooth size, dentition type, …
