This thesis is an analysis of the culture of the Montagnais-Naskapi Indians of the Labrador Peninsula in northeastern North America. The compound term "Montagnais-Naskapi" was proposed by Hallowell. "Montagnais" had previously been used to designate those bands living in the southern half of the Peninsula and "Naskapi" those in the north. The compound name was later employed for both groups because of their general culture and linguistic similarity.

The following study is a partial analysis of the phonology of the dialect spoken at Naze, the largest city on the island of Amami O'Shima in the northern Ryukyo Islands. Although it is generally known that Ryukyuan is related to Japanese, no descriptive study, employing modern linguistic methods, has been published for any of the Ryukyuan dialects. The time available for the fieldwork underlying this analysis limited the problem to phonology, and even here, the results are subject to the disadvantages of data which may be incomplete. The present study has been undertaken in order to investigate those aspects of culture which are reflected in the folk tales--and those which are not--and the extent of that reflection. Furthermore, because the large body of Hopi literature provides a practical advantage for folk tale analysis, the specific problem selected was that of assessing the reflection of Hopi culture in their folk tales.
