Material Agency In The Urban Material Culture Initiative, Robert Rotenberg

This contribution to the discussion of collecting contemporary objects reviews the implications of taking seriously how and what objects communicate, especially how we can identify the ways messages are coded in the forms of familiar objects. Of special interest are the conceptual tools that are available to differentiate these messages when objects are arranged in assemblages, including emergent implicit messages, the messages implicit in sets of objects. I advocate an approach to collecting in museums based on the tactics people use to create these assemblages at home. What theorizing about material agency offers to our collection program is a focus …

White Snake, Black Snake Folk Narrative Meets Master Narrative In Qing Dynasty Sichuanese Cross-Stitch Medallions, Cory Willmott
White Snake, Black Snake Folk Narrative Meets Master Narrative In Qing Dynasty Sichuanese Cross-Stitch Medallions, Cory Willmott
Cory A. Willmott
The cross-stitch medallion in figure 1 was collected by my grandmother, Katherine Willmott, in the early 1920s when she was a missionary in Renshow, Sichuan Province, West China. Many years after I inherited it, I learned that it depicts a folk narrative called “White Snake; Black Snake” that was traditionally performed both on stage in the legitimate theaters and in Chinese shadow puppet dramas (Highbaugh n/d:6).
The story may be summarized as follows: There were two female snakes, White Snake and Black Snake, who were inseparable friends. They both changed into beautiful young women. White Snake got married and bore …
Human Rights And Illicit Trade In Cultural Objects, Ana Filipa Vrdoljak
Human Rights And Illicit Trade In Cultural Objects, Ana Filipa Vrdoljak
Ana Filipa Vrdoljak
Movable cultural heritage is not bounded nor shielded by national territorial borders. Applicable domestic laws are of limited import without the cooperation of other states and the international community. Despite a century of domestic legal protection of movable cultural heritage in many states, widespread non-compliance and lack of enforcement has been the norm rather than the exception. However, the tide is turning. States formerly reluctant to ratify cultural heritage treaties have done so, signalling their acceptance of the importance of multilateral action in this field. Enforcement of such laws is viewed as part of the reinforcement of good governance, rule …

The Paradox Of Gender Among West China Missionary Collectors, 1920-1950, Cory A. Willmott
The Paradox Of Gender Among West China Missionary Collectors, 1920-1950, Cory A. Willmott
Cory A. Willmott
During the turbulent years between the Chinese nationalist revolution of 1911 and the communist victory of 1949, a group of missionaries lived and worked in West China whose social gospel theologies led to unusual identification with Chinese. Among the regular social actors in their lives were itinerant “curio men” who, amidst the chaos of feuding warlords, gathered up the heirlooms of the deposed Manchurian aristocracy and offered these wares for sale on the quiet and orderly verandahs of the mansions inside the missionary compounds of West China Union University. Although missionary men and women often collected the same types of …
Enforcing Restitution Of Cultural Heritage Through Peace Agreements, Ana Filipa Vrdoljak
Enforcing Restitution Of Cultural Heritage Through Peace Agreements, Ana Filipa Vrdoljak
Ana Filipa Vrdoljak
Peace agreements have been an important source of international law in modern times. They have been especially important in the earliest formulations of the international and regional protection of cultural heritage. The significance of this source of international law making and its enforcement has become more pronounced with the exponential proliferation of peace processes and resultant agreements since the end of the Cold War. It is argued that how cultural heritage (and cultural rights) is historically dealt with in peace agreements falls broadly into three discernible categories: (1) restitution and restoration of cultural heritage as reparations between existing states, post …
