At The Nexus Between The National And The Global: The Discursive Construction Of The Turkish Halal Market In The Neoliberal Age, Yesim Kaptan

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

This article analyzes a recently emerging halal market in Turkey and illuminates how discursive strategies foster the halal movement in an Islamic culture, and in a neoliberal economy. By exploring websites of the Turkish halal regulatory institutions and employing critical discourse analysis of the media materials, I demonstrate how Islamic actors (halal certification institutions and businesses) adapt, appropriate, and contest different discursive strategies to achieve legitimacy, to compete for distinction and to acquire power in a newly emerging and fiercely competitive, yet a globally defined field in a national economy. The discursive contestations of the actors shaped by the ambivalent …

Rural heritage is a complicated cultural knowledge. Considering the visitors who come, to the living heritage sites, spending their spare time and at the same time, to get a piece of new knowledge in a nostalgic context, the heritage exhibition is the ideal EDUTAINMENTAL deliverable that could transmit the rural heritage knowledge using the interactive thinking methodology. The former approach creates a kind of curiosity for the visitors guaranteeing the life-long learning process. Therefore, reviewing the cultural significance of intangible cultural heritage, especially the manifestations of the rural socio-cultural heritage practices, the research paper aims at presenting a new aspect …

The Tourist And The Toured: How Hostel Owners Navigate The Age Of Global Gentrification, Brianna Bilter Oct 2019

The Tourist And The Toured: How Hostel Owners Navigate The Age Of Global Gentrification, Brianna Bilter

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Since the mid-1990s, numerous Moroccan riads, or traditional homes built around a central courtyard, have been converted into tourist accommodations in Morocco’s old medinas. This paper seeks to analyze the impact of riad-style hostels specifically on the medinas, as hostels are relatively new to Morocco and have various benefits and consequences for the community. Though hostels are often portrayed as a sustainable form of tourist accommodation compared to multinational hotel corporations, they have an acute impact by bringing tourists into previously residential spaces and exacerbating the effects of global gentrification. My research relies on interviews with hostel owners and employees, …

Escuchando Y Enseñando: Un Proyecto De Investigación-Acción Participativa Sobre El Tema De Radio Con Los Estudiantes Del Centro Calpulli, Delaney Zuver

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Death Penalty: The Law Lords Alter Course In The Commonwealth Caribbean, Harold A. Young J.D./Llb, Phd

Journal of International and Global Studies

This article is a critical examination of the decisions of the Judicial Council of the Privy Council (JCPC) in death penalty appeals from the Commonwealth Caribbean from 1966 to 2008. It contributes to our understanding of how court rulings may be influenced by specific aspects of the judicial environment, which is shaped by the majority party in parliament, whose prime minister selects judges and which may make substantive changes in the law. In a quantitative examination of death penalty appeals, I find an increased likelihood that the court will set aside the death penalty when the judicial environment changes.

Japan’S Policy On The Trans-Pacific Partnership (Tpp) In Light Of Ir Theory And Analytical Eclecticism, Daisuke Akimoto Ph.D. Jun 2019

Japan’S Policy On The Trans-Pacific Partnership (Tpp) In Light Of Ir Theory And Analytical Eclecticism, Daisuke Akimoto Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Japan’s policy toward the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement has been controversial at the political, academic, and public levels. The domestic debate on the TPP literally split public opinion in Japan, and academic analyses are apt to be argumentatively divided into pros and cons. Likewise, earlier studies regarding the TPP in the field of international relations offered particular theoretical perspectives, yet tended not to conduct eclectic theoretical examination. In order to overcome the research gap, this paper attempts to provide both narrative and theoretical explanations by applying international relations (IR) theory in combination with “analytical eclecticism” as a research method in …

Participatory Action Research And Prospects For Electoral Conflict Prevention In Zambia, Rose Fumpa-Makano Ph.D., Major General Vincent Mbaulu Mukanda (Rtd.) Jun 2019

Participatory Action Research And Prospects For Electoral Conflict Prevention In Zambia, Rose Fumpa-Makano Ph.D., Major General Vincent Mbaulu Mukanda (Rtd.)

Journal of International and Global Studies

Although elections are fundamental to democratic consolidation by peacefully electing people to serve in public offices, in many cases they not only bring along ideological contestations but also interparty violent conflicts. Based on a Participatory Action Research (PAR) design, this paper presents field-based lessons on training conducted to curb interparty electoral conflict prior to August 2016 general elections held in Zambia. The study comprised 521 participants from nine political parties which contested in 2016 general elections. Party officials were purposely selected from their provincial, district and constituency level hierarchy. The study aimed at understanding causes for interparty political violence and …
