Economic Analysis Prepared For The Environmental Impact Statement On Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Conservation And Management On The Nebraska National Forest And Associated Units, Martin Beutler

Economics Staff Paper Series

This limited analysis resulted from a request by the Nebraska National Forest to provide some economic estimates to the value of changes in forage availability that would result from three proposed levels of rodenticide use in the management of black-tailed prairie dogs (BTPD) on the Nebraska National Forest (NNF) and associated units managed by NNF (i.e. Buffalo Gap National Grasslands, Ft. Pierre National Grasslands in South Dakota, and the Oglala National Grasslands in Nebraska.) The values of changes in forage availability were determined based on three alternatives of rodenticide use. These alternatives include: (1) limit use of rodenticides to only …

Comparison Of 'Organic' And 'Conventional' Grains And Soybean Prices In The Northern Great Plains And Upper Midwest: 1995 Through 2003, Nicholas Streff, Thomas L. Dobbs

Economics Pamphlet Series

Price premiums for organic crops drew the attention of an increasing number of farmers throughout the 1990s. Premiums contributed to the expansion of U.S. farmland managed under organic farming systems during that time period. Expansion of organic farming systems continued at least through 2001. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Economic Research Service's most recent data on organic farming systems, U.S. farmers and ranchers added almost one million acres of certified organic farmland between 1997 and 2001, an increase of 74 percent. Over that same time frame, certified organic cropland increased by 53 percent). The USDA implemented national …

The Role Of Industry Attributes In Determining The Pattern Of U.S.-Canada Intra-Industry Trade In 1997, Bashir Qasmi, Scott Fausti

Economics Staff Paper Series

Trade flow patterns associated with U.S. - Canada bilateral trade by industry groups are investigated (Food and live animal products, manufacturing products, chemical products, and machinery and transportation products). The analysis uses the OECD data for 1997 U.S.-Canada bilateral trade flows combined with the U.S. industry characteristics data from the U.S. Economic Census. Levels of intra-industry trade, measured by the Grubel Lloyd Index, were regressed on a number of industry characteristics using OLS techniques. Empirical results indicate that selected measures of product differentiation, market power, and market structure are important influences upon U.S.-Canada bilateral trade in the selected industries. Finally, …

Discontinued Voluntary Price Reports For Live Cattle: Will They Be Missed By Producers?, Scott Fausti, He Sun, Matthew Diersen

Economics Staff Paper Series

One consequence of federal mandatory livestock price reporting regulations for the cattle industry was the discontinuation of eight regional voluntary price reports for slaughter cattle. The economic implication for market transparency in those affected regional markets is investigated. Agricultural Marketing News Services data were collected from discontinued price reports for a five-year period, along with aggregated regional price reports that were not eliminated under the new price reporting regime. Both sets of price reports were analyzed to determine if any of the price series, which continued to be published as mandatory reports, could be used by producers as a replacement …
