Profitability Of South Dakota's Commercial Banks, C. Lamberton
Profitability Of South Dakota's Commercial Banks, C. Lamberton
Economics Staff Paper Series
Over the recent seven year business cycle of 1988-94, South Dakota banks have seen their profitability improve significantly. This has contributed to a strengthening of the banks in the state and in their ability to meet the financial needs of their customers and communities. The data in this report show that while bank earnings have been strong, the gains have not been distributed evenly across banks of all sizes. The data also demonstrate the related differences in loan portfolios among the banks of varying size. This report describes the improved profitability, the sources of the improved profits, and the distribution …

The overall goal of the SARE/Water Quality project was to determine whether economic incentives offered by recent environmental provisions of the Federal farm program are sufficient to induce Western Corn Belt/Northern Great Plains farmers in environmentally sensitive areas to adopt sustainable farming practices and systems. To attain this goal, four case farms were chosen to be involved in this study based on their size, soil types, cropping systems, topography, and management in the Big Sioux Aquifer study area.

Post-CRP land use intentions of Conservation Reserve Program contract holders in South Dakota are examined. Results from logistic regression models indicate CRP crop base acres, farm commodity and conservation program provisions, and livestock/hay management are major factors affecting post-CRP land use plans.

Economic And Environmental Contributions Of Wetlands In Agricultural Landscapes, Larry Janssen, Diane Rickerl, Eric Stebbins, Tom Machacek
Economics Staff Paper Series
The purpose of this project was to determine key environmental and economic relationships between agricultural practices and wetlands in the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) of eastern South Dakota. Water quality and water quantity variables were the key environmental parameters examined. Economic cost and returns by farm management system and wetland proximity were the key economic parameters. The three farm management systems examined were conventional (CON) transitional no-till (TNT), and organic (ORG). The TNT and CON management systems used synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. The ORG system used no synthetic fertilizers and generally no chemical pesticides. The ORG system had greater …

Organic Versus Sustainable Fed Cattle Production: A South Dakota Case Study, Donald Taylor, Dillion Feuz, Ming Guan
Organic Versus Sustainable Fed Cattle Production: A South Dakota Case Study, Donald Taylor, Dillion Feuz, Ming Guan
Economics Staff Paper Series
This is an exploratory study of "organic11 versus "sustainable" agriculture applied to fed cattle production. Two interrelated premises underlie the study. The paramount factors considered in current certification standards for organic beef production, in our judgment, are (1) protection of animal health and welfare and (2) production of a differentiated product intended to be conducive to consumer health and which, therefore, will command a price premium in the market. Second, we believe the concept of sustainability embraces concerns extending beyond those currently embodied in organic production standards. The theme of organic versus sustainable fed cattle production is examined through development …

Cendak And South Dakota: An Economic Impact Study, Martin Beutler
Economics Staff Paper Series
CENDAK is an acronym for the Central South Dakota Water Supply System and is a multi purpose water delivery system which would use Missouri River water from Lake Oahe. The project would service 300,000 acres of farmland. Other potential uses of the project would be for a municipal and industrial water supply system. Economic activity generated from construction of CENDAK is estimated at $911.9 million, providing over 10, 700 temporary, full- and part-time employment opportunities in the 1 O year construction process and in industries which support construction of the project. Annual operation, maintenance, and repair costs of CENDAK would …

CRM is young in South Dakota. Operating MOU's were signed in December 1988 to accommodate traditional and emerging issues on private as well as public lands. It wasn't until 1994 that fiscal resources were assembled to provide intensive CRM training. The training is three tiered: (1) inform high level administrators and organizational leaders about CRM and solicit their support, (2) present 13 CRM Community Training workshops in 2·day sessions to local community leaders, including landowners and resource personnel, and (3) train a cadre of CRM facilitators in two a day sessions, both private and public, broadly dispersed in the state, …
