Interrogating The Socio-Ethical Dilemmas Of Precision Agriculture Technologies, Ayorinde Ogunyiola

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Farming has moved into a digital age where data and information are available to farmers to make informed agronomic and financial on-farm decisions. The development of precision agriculture (PA), such as big data technologies and machine learning algorithms is transforming the agricultural food production system in diverse ways, economically, environmentally, and socially. Despite benefits afforded by PA to agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability, these technologies can raise unintended societal challenges that can also limit their adoption among farmers. PA is changing how farming is done, reconstructing farmers’ social identities, and influencing relationships between farmers, agronomists, and technology developers. This dissertation …

South Dakota Farm Survey

From January to March 2018, we surveyed South Dakota commodity crop producers about their land management practices and attitudes. Farming operations in 34 South Dakota counties east of the Missouri River, where most of corn and soybean farming activities in the state are located, were targeted to take the questionnaire (see map below). We obtained a list of 10,000 farming operations that had participated in Farm Service Agency (FSA) programs in 2016 from the FSA and selected 3,000 operations to participate using proportionate stratified-random sampling according to number of farming operations in the study counties. The questionnaire directed the person …

Changing Times In South Dakota Agriculture: Implications For Our Citizens, Larry Janssen

Economics Staff Paper Series

We are living in times of rapid change in agriculture and in rural America. Hog and beef confinement systems, automated feeding systems, pesticides, four-wheel drive tractors and personal computers are innovations that did not exist or were seldom seen on farms 25 years ago. Interstate highways, factories in small cities, subterminal elevators and consolidated schools are examples of the changing landscape in rural America. In times of rapid change, many people are concerned about the future of agriculture, family farms and rural communities. In this paper, recent trends in South Dakota agriculture are presented and analyzed. Major implications of these …

The Farm Labor Situation In South Dakota As Of October 17, 1942, Walter L. Slocum, Gabriel Lundy

Agricultural Experiment Station Mimeograph Pamphlets (1942)

This report is based principally on returns from 1101 farmers located in 28 South Dakota counties. The survey was conducted in an attempt to secure a representative and objective picture of the 1942 farm labor situation, the probable 1943 farm labor situation and the influence of present and probable labor and machinery shortages on farm production plans for 1943. The reports from the 1101 farmers cover only their farms.
