An experimental and simulation-based study was performed on a 12C ion minibeam radiation therapy (MBRT) field produced with a clinical broad beam and a brass multi-slit collimator (MSC). Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) microdosimeters developed at the Centre for Medical Radiation Physics (CMRP) with micron sized sensitive volumes were used to measure the microdosimetric spectra at varying positions throughout the MBRT field and the corresponding dose-mean lineal energies and RBE for 10% cell survival (RBE10) were calculated using the modified Microdosimetric Kinetic Model (MKM). Self-heating or even spontaneous combustion of stockpiled coal, which is likely to outbreak under favourable circumstances during its transport, process, and storage, is a long-standing thermal dynamic hazard. This hazard is harmful in diverse aspects: causing loss of coal resource and caking property, raising safety concerns upon occurrence of open fire, and giving off noxious/greenhouse effect gases. This paper reports a novel magnetorheological fluid (MRF)-based damper, which synergizes the attributes of variable stiffness and damping through the compact assembly of two MRF damping units and a spring. The magnetic field densities of the two damping units were analyzed. After the prototype of the new MRF damper, a hydraulically actuated MTS machine was used to test the damper's performance, including stiffness variability and damping variability, amplitudedependent responses and frequency-dependent responses. We analyze the steady-state operation of a generalized reactor model that encompasses a continuous flow bioreactor and an idealized continuous flow membrane reactor as limiting cases. The biochemical reaction kinetics is governed by a Contois growth model subject to noncompetitive substrate inhibition with a variable substrate yield coefficient. The steady-state performance of the reactor is predicted and stability of the steady-state solutions as a function of dimensionless residence time reported. Este estudio examina la variación de /l/ y /r/ mediante 32 entrevistas sociolingüísticas llevadas a cabo en la ciudad de Guantánamo, Cuba. Además, investiga la influencia del contexto fonológico, el nivel académico, la edad y el sexo en el uso de ciertas variantes de /r/ y /l/. Los factores lingüísticos internos considerados fueron: el contexto lingüístico (posición final de sílaba o final de palabra) y el segmento lingüístico. También se consideraron factores sociales tales como: el nivel académico, la edad y el sexo.

This paper presents a flicker mitigation scheme for the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) during variable wind conditions. The flicker mitigation strategy was developed based on the distribution line X/R ratio and the active power deviation from the average active power during variable wind conditions. Flicker emission was analyzed using a flicker meter based on the IEC standards. Both short-term and long-term flicker severities were analyzed during the time period of study. This paper presents simulation studies of an electric arc furnace (EAF) model in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment. EAF was modeled as a current source controlled by a non-linear resistance. Voltage flicker, a phenomenon of annoying light intensity fluctuation, caused by EAF, has been a major power quality concern for both power companies and customers. A model was developed for the electric arc furnace and it was applied in the simulation studies of distribution static synchronous compensator (DSTATCOM) for voltage flicker mitigation. This paper presents a voltage and power quality enhancement scheme for a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) wind farm during variable wind conditions. The wind profiles were derived considering the measured data at a DFIG wind farm located in Northern Ireland (NI). The aggregated DFIG wind farm model was validated using measured data at a wind farm during variable generation. The voltage control strategy was developed considering the X/R ratio of the wind farm feeder which connects the wind farm and the grid. This paper proposes a novel device based on the Magnetorheological (MR) fluid which has the capability to change stiffness and damping under control. MR fluid is a type of smart material whose properties could be controlled by the external magnetic field. Most of MR devices are MR dampers, which normally are used as variable damping devices. In October–November 2011 we measured trace gas emission factors from seven prescribed fires in South Carolina (SC), US, using two Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) systems and whole air sampling (WAS) into canisters followed by gas-chromatographic analysis. A total of 97 trace gas species were quantified from both airborne and ground-based sampling platforms, making this one of the most detailed field studies of fire emissions to date. The measurements include the first emission factors for a suite of monoterpenes produced by heating vegetative fuels during field fires. The bicyclic hexaamine "cage" ligand Me 8tricosaneN 6 (1,5,5,9,13,13,20,20-octamethyl-3,7,11,15,18, 22-hexaazabicyclo[7.7.7]tricosane) is capable of encapsulating octahedral metal ions, yet its expanded cavity allows the complexed metal to adopt a variety of geometries comprising either hexadentate or pentadentate coordination of the ligand. When complexed to Cu II the lability of the metal results in a dynamic equilibrium in solution between hexadentate- and pentadentate- coordinated complexes of Me 8tricosaneN 6. Both [Cu(Me 8tricosaneN 6)](ClO 4) 2 (6-coordinate) and [Cu(Me 8tricosaneN 6)](S 2O 6) (5-coordinate) have been characterized structurally. A topic of recurring interest in ecological research is the degree to which vegetation structure influences the distribution and abundance of species. Here we test the applicability of remote sensing, particularly novel use of waveform lidar measurements, for quantifying the habitat heterogeneity of a contiguous northern hardwoods forest in the northeastern United States. We apply these results to predict the breeding habitat quality, an indicator of reproductive output of a well-studied Neotropical migrant songbird, the Black-throated Blue Warbler (Dendroica caerulescens). Converting food to chemical energy (ATP) that is usable by cells is a principal requirement to sustain life. The rate of ATP production has to be sufficient for housekeeping functions, such as protein synthesis and maintaining membrane potentials, as well as for growth and locomotion. Energy metabolism is temperature sensitive, and animals respond to environmental variability at different temporal levels, from within‐individual to evolutionary timescales. The marker variable technique offers a practical and easy method to address the validity threat on account of common method variance to the findings of individual studies. Hawever, the validity of the marker variable technique has not been established. This paper examines the validity threat to the marker variable technique arising from multiple criteria for the selection of the marker variable proposed in the literature. Habitat-modifying invasive species can influence rates of predation on native prey either directly by providing protective structure or indirectly by modifying traits of prey species responding to the habitat. The alga Caulerpa taxifolia is one of the most successful invasive species of shallow-water marine systems globally, often provisioning habitat in areas previously lacking in vegetated structure. We experimentally evaluated the direct effect of Caulerpa to provide refuge for the native clam Anadara trapezia and how this balances with its influence on two trait-mediated indirect interactions that may increase Anadara's susceptibility to predators. This paper presents a control strategy for output maximisation of a direct drive permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)-based small-scale variable-speed wind turbine. The control topology uses a single switch three-phase switch-mode rectifi er and the generator torque, and power is controlled by controlling the switch duty cycle of the switch. To extract maximum power from the wind, the torque reference of the PMSG is calculated from generator speed and wind turbine characteristics. Based on the linearized long-wave equation, two new analytical solutions are obtained respectively for the propagation of long surface gravity waves around a conical island and over a paraboloidal shoal. Having been intensively studied during the last two decades, these two problems have practical significance and are physically revealing for wave propagation over variable water depth. The newly derived analytical solutions are compared with several previously obtained numerical solutions and the accuracy of those numerical solutions is discussed. The analytical method has the potential to be used to find solutions for wave propagation over more natural bottom topographies.
