Student Ethnographic Research Experiences At The University Of Puget Sound, Andrew M. Gardner

This brief essay describes programming at the University

of Puget Sound that allows undergraduate students to pursue

independent ethnographic research projects. This programming

undergirds all three of the subsequent student essays included in this

issue. The mission of this programming is to encourage “experiential

learning”—an objective that is aligned (and perhaps derivative)

of the methodological toolkit long deployed by anthropological

ethnographers. The essay describes the pedagogic goals that I

have been able to integrate into the supervision of this experiential

programming, and also discusses how we have sought to balance

independently-derived student research interests with the broader

Remote Research As Authentic Learning Online, David Pacifico

This article reports on a pilot effort to use ArcGIS Online to create a decentralized archaeological mapping lab for digitizing and analyzing archaeological materials visible in satellite imagery. This effort meets student and project needs through an authentic learning opportunity. This effort promises to help us document and study archaeological sites that are likely to be erased before adequate study can be completed on the ground. Developing innovative technologies can be a difficult task for small to medium academic libraries where resources for new technological development are limited. At our university, we've implemented a program, BiblioTech Labs, whereby we partner with undergraduate researchers in the School of Computer Science to solve library technology problems. In this session we discuss our program, future plans, and how libraries can use this model to leverage local technology education to help solve technology problems.

This commentary considers some of the challenges of applying mixed methods research in undergraduate research degrees, especially in professions with a clinical health focus. Our experience in physiotherapy academia is used as an example. Mixed methods research is increasingly appreciated in its own right as a “third paradigm,” however the success of educating novice researchers in mixing methods requires reflection on a range of theoretical and practical issues. Behavioral Citation Analysis: Toward Collection Enhancement For Users, Beth E. Fuchs, Cristina M. Thomsen, Randolph G. Bias, Donald G. Davis Jr.

A pilot study was developed to determine use of the University of Texas at Austin General Libraries’ research collections in the fields of civil engineering and educational psychology and to investigate the research behavior of graduate students. First, the authors sampled bibliographic citations from dissertations completed during the years 1997 and 2002 in the above-named fields. Then, a survey was sent to the dissertation writers to gain insight into use and opinions of library services for their graduate research. Analysis of information provided by both collection- and user-centered data-gathering techniques serves to underscore the value of the merged evaluation methods.

Research As A Learning Experience: A Phenomenological Explication, Charlotte Pietersen

The Qualitative Report

A phenomenological method was employed to explore the learning experiences of seven honours psychology learners who have completed research projects. The research event was experienced as a learning adventure, a period of personal growth, and also lead to a strong appreciation of the differences between doing research in practice and research as described in texts. They regarded time management and problem solving skills as important prerequisites to successful research. Findings provide guidelines for academics involved in the research training of learners and are a useful source of information, to provide insight into and alert learners to the challenges of research.
