Transforming Sociology Courses With Human Rights Education: Curriculum, Pedagogy, And Classroom Environment Considerations, Karie Jo Peralta

Societies Without Borders

Sociology courses have significant potential to liberate students. A promising way to achieve this aim is by grounding courses in human rights principles such as respect, equity, equality, and democratic participation. Using a college-level, introductory sociology course as an example, this paper explores how a human rights education (HRE) framework can serve as a foundation for the teaching of sociology. The purpose is to show how sociology educators can relatively easily embed HRE into the learning experience. To begin, I will present a HRE framework. Then, I will illustrate how common course topics, teaching methods, and classroom conditions can be …

Changing Perceptions Of Masculinity And Femininity In America?: Revisiting The Bem Sex-Role Inventory, Sarah Ann Bell

Honors Theses and Capstones

This study replicated previous research regarding college students’ perceptions of personality and character traits as “masculine”, “feminine”, or “neutral .” The sample consisted of 56 undergraduate students recruited from introductory sociology classes at a public university in New England. Participants completed online surveys where they ranked how desirable it is in American society for a man or for a woman to possess each of 60 traits used in the Bem Sex-Role Inventory. While participants ranked some traits as less gendered than 20 years ago, aligning with previous research, they ranked other traits as more gendered than those traits had previously …

Success Among Incarcerated Mothers Seeking Treatment For Opioid Use Disorder, Brinna Desai Jan 2022

Success Among Incarcerated Mothers Seeking Treatment For Opioid Use Disorder, Brinna Desai

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a type of substance use disorder characterized by repeated use of opioid drugs. These drugs are known to be rapidly addictive with severe withdrawal symptoms, making death due to overdose a rising concern. In this study, we took a closer look at a specific population of women, all of whom had children and were incarcerated for opioid use. Our goal was to better understand the factors that would impact success among this group seeking medication-assisted treatment for OUD. We developed a set of questions focused on a variety of factors including stigma surrounding the disorder, …

Life Of The Party: Social Networks, Public Attention, And The Importance Of Shocks In The Presidential Nomination Process, Elizabeth A. Stiles, Colin D. Swearingen, Linda Seiter Jan 2022

Life Of The Party: Social Networks, Public Attention, And The Importance Of Shocks In The Presidential Nomination Process, Elizabeth A. Stiles, Colin D. Swearingen, Linda Seiter

2022 Faculty Bibliography

We examine the effects of shocks on the invisible Presidential primary in the United States. First, we build on existing models using an algorithm simulating social network shocks. Findings show that positive shocks significantly aid the lead candidate’s chances of winning in the invisible primary. Negative shocks, however, are less detrimental to a lead candidate than positive shocks are helpful, as the leader is often able to survive a negative shock and still emerge victorious. Broad empirical tests demonstrate the importance of shocks as well. Beyond the importance of shocks, findings also suggest that Presidential candidate success in the invisible …

Postcolonial Indian Ruling Texts: The Ramayana, Shuchi Sanyal Jan 2022

Postcolonial Indian Ruling Texts: The Ramayana, Shuchi Sanyal

Undergraduate Honors Theses

I shall be writing about the Ramayana as a ruling text and the post colonial interpretation of Hindu mythology perpetuating gender roles and encourages women to be submissive. The imposition of Western ideals alters the perception of cultural expectations of women and that to behave misogynistically is to be true to traditional Indian values. The Ramayana is a fable recorded in religious text, The Bhagavad Gita, and is taught to children to convey the Hindu objective of human pursuit composed of duties, prosperity, desire, spiritual liberation. The original text consists of nearly twenty four thousand verses in the Shloka meter, …

A Multi-Method Examination Of The Effects Of Students’ Unconscious Biases On Student Evaluations Of Instructors, Brittany M. Kowalski Jan 2022

A Multi-Method Examination Of The Effects Of Students’ Unconscious Biases On Student Evaluations Of Instructors, Brittany M. Kowalski

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

In this dissertation, I complete three studies to evaluate potential reactions to target role congruity, especially gender role congruity, through an examination of Student Evaluations of Instructors (SEIs). Target role congruity refers to assessments an observer makes of whether or not the various roles a target person fills “fit” with one another. For example, a woman surgeon may be perceived as being in an incongruent role due to the masculine characteristics associated with the occupation and the continued dominance of men in the field. Researchers utilizing congruity theories has shown that both women and men in roles that are incongruent …

This confidential survey project used demographic, quantitative, and open-ended questions to understand student perceptions of belonging and inclusion during the online admissions process. Of 750 students contacted, 57 students responded to the demographic questions, 50 to the quantitative questions, and 17 students left in-depth responses about their …

Pets And Problems: Exploring Community Patterns In Calls For Animal Services, Paige Dejarnett Dec 2021

Pets And Problems: Exploring Community Patterns In Calls For Animal Services, Paige Dejarnett

Sociology and Criminology Undergraduate Honors Theses

Pets have historically been viewed as family members, children, property, or economic resources. However, research surrounding animal maltreatment has expressed this issue as an individually-based problem, rather than a community-based phenomenon. Correlations have been found between animal cruelty, antisocial behaviors, and future interpersonal violence, whether this correlation be a predictive relationship, or a resultant relationship. Past research has also found correlations between animal treatment practices and the rural/urban differences of this behavior. However, there are many community-based indicators that have not been explored to understand the distribution of animal maltreatment. This study aims to explore these ideas by analyzing the …

Reforming United States Prisons: A Cross-Cultural Analysis, Alex Henkel Oct 2021

Reforming United States Prisons: A Cross-Cultural Analysis, Alex Henkel

Honors Theses

This paper examines the United States prison system and its standing among peer countries, as well as potential reforms to improve this system and its effectiveness. The incarceration statistics of many different countries show that the United States incarcerates significantly more of its population than similar countries. I turn to an examination of how penal policies are formed across the world to evaluate their impact on the U.S. prison rate compared to other countries. Additionally, I look at recidivism to determine the effectiveness of United States incarceration. This analysis aims to highlight the differences between the U.S. and other countries …

Race Talk Amongst White Families During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Steven Campos '22 Aug 2021

Race Talk Amongst White Families During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Steven Campos '22

Student Scholarship

The year 2020 was a time of struggle, difficulty, and fear for many individuals due to the COVID-19 pandemic as victims of the virus increased dramatically throughout the year. As a result, many families have had to stay close together under the same roof to avoid the risk of infection. Along with the concern of the virus, protests against police brutality rose around the world after the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor in May and March, respectively, of 2020. The media heavily covered the protests throughout the summer, making the topic almost impossible to ignore, sparking conversations among …

The Value In Imperfect Endeavors: Exploring Postcapitalist And Prefigurative Practices At East Wind Intentional Community, Olivia Chandler 23 Aug 2021

The Value In Imperfect Endeavors: Exploring Postcapitalist And Prefigurative Practices At East Wind Intentional Community, Olivia Chandler 23

Student Scholarship

From the emergence of modern capitalism, people have searched for alternatives through building communal societies. The 1960s hippie movement in the United States inspired a surge of communal living, centered around non-violence and living in balance with the environment. The East Wind Intentional Community, an income-sharing egalitarian commune in Missouri, was born of this movement and still exists today, as people continuously look for ways to escape the “rat race” of mainstream society, 9-5 jobs, and economic insecurity arising from a globalized and neoliberal economic system. My research, grounded in interviews and participant observation, focuses on East Wind’s relationship with …

Internalized Paternal Exclusion From The Inside Out: How Has Covid Changed It?, Shania Kuo '23 Aug 2021

Internalized Paternal Exclusion From The Inside Out: How Has Covid Changed It?, Shania Kuo '23

Student Scholarship

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the routines of families all over the U.S. faced massive disruptions as schools and workplaces moved online. During this time, mothers faced the primary responsibility of keeping the household afloat and keeping track of their children’s education even as fathers worked remotely. As fathers return to the workplace, mothers are still staying behind, begging the question what forces are shaping mothers’ justifications of their presence at the home and their partners’ presences outside. Drawing upon 18 interviews, I examine two research questions: (1) How are mothers dealing with their husbands’ absences when performing …

All The Shifts: Mothering And Working In The Pandemic Era, Kaela Dunne '22 Aug 2021

All The Shifts: Mothering And Working In The Pandemic Era, Kaela Dunne '22

Student Scholarship

The Covid-19 pandemic and the consequent stay-at-home order in the United States have caused families to create offices and classrooms in their homes. For many families, their children’s age and school closures increased a need for parental guidance and academic aid. Recent research has investigated how families managed their children’s education and adult work priorities, finding that, during the pandemic, mothers were often called upon as the primary academic aid (Miller 2020; Miller 2021; Marshall 2021;). To do so, many women had to leave positions or decrease their employment hours (Marshall 2021). While research speculates about the long-term effects of …

Unprecedented Times?: Analyzing The Experiences Of Mothers During The Covid-19 Pandemic Using A Disaster Sociology Framework, Caroline Freundel '24 Aug 2021

Unprecedented Times?: Analyzing The Experiences Of Mothers During The Covid-19 Pandemic Using A Disaster Sociology Framework, Caroline Freundel '24

Student Scholarship

During times of disaster, mothers are particularly vulnerable emotionally. Furthermore, disaster sociologists argue that disasters exacerbate existing inequalities. . As such, I analyze the COVID-19 pandemic as a disaster. I base my analysis off of interview data from white, class-diverse mothers in a central New York county, primarily using a disaster sociology framework. This research is guided by two research questions; (1) how do the experiences of mothers during the COVID-19 pandemic compare to those of women in other disaster scenarios?; and (2) solely utilizing a disaster sociology framework, what pre-existing social conditions are exacerbated by COVID-19 stay-at-home directives and …

Green Business And The Culture Of Capitalism: Constructing Narratives Of Environmentalism, Julia S. Jester Jun 2021

Green Business And The Culture Of Capitalism: Constructing Narratives Of Environmentalism, Julia S. Jester

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There are widespread colloquial arguments claiming that any actions taken to combat climate change will be bad for business and the economy, scaring people into continuing their support for the status quo for fear of their financial security. Alternatively, those attempting to combat ecological destruction have subsequently made transitions to sustainable development of products and shifting consumer behavior within this system. There is one core argument that both sides have, albeit in different ways – capitalism and environmentalism are seemingly incompatible; one cannot be successful without the eradication of the other. While it may appear there are only strict binary …

Neoliberalism, Civic Identity, And Resistance: An Ethnographic Case Study Of A Community Development Organization, Erin Layne Elliott Jun 2021

Neoliberalism, Civic Identity, And Resistance: An Ethnographic Case Study Of A Community Development Organization, Erin Layne Elliott

Dissertations and Theses

Research on the marketization of the nonprofit sector and how it has come to operate in more business-like ways has been well documented in recent years. This research has largely focused on how marketization has pervaded the nonprofit sector, yet little research has been done on how business-like values and modes of acting are manifesting in nonprofits. Even less understood are the impacts marketization may have on foundational civic values in the nonprofit sector. As marketized discourses proliferate, concerns have been raised about threats to nonprofit autonomy and the sector's important civic role. This dissertation aims to fill this gap …

A Post Title-Ix Analysis Of American Sports Culture: The Women Aren’T Done Yet, Bridget Schauder Jun 2021

A Post Title-Ix Analysis Of American Sports Culture: The Women Aren’T Done Yet, Bridget Schauder

Honors Theses

This thesis seeks to examine the disparities women continue to face in the realm of athletics since the enactment of Title IX in 1972. This research is important because throughout history women have been left behind in society compared to men and athletics is just another social space where that occurs. Additionally, sports are so important to American culture, yet women still struggle to gain the respect and recognition they deserve. Feminist theory suggests that sports are gendered activities because the knowledge is grounded in the values and experiences of men. This thesis uses interview and survey analysis to understand …

This article represents some inquiries about Mohamed Dahman’s book entitled: Nomadic and stability. The researcher believes what motivated the author to write about this issue is the lackof studies that address the issue of sociology in the Sahraoui context. Therefore, this book is mainly about two eras; the pre- Spanish colonial period, 2- the period of stability and the occurrence of the social, legal institutions. Aatouf tried to analyze the content of the chapters of the book. He titled the first chapter as: Nomadic, as a life style. Dahman, in this chapter, tried to analyze the different types of Bedouins …

The Case Of The Dream Maker: Perec, Pontalis, And Dream Writing, Aubrey Gabel May 2021

The Case Of The Dream Maker: Perec, Pontalis, And Dream Writing, Aubrey Gabel

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

This article considers Georges Perec’s La Boutique obscure as a literary experiment in dream writing, by putting it in dialogue with French Freudianism, notably the clinical papers of J.-B. Pontalis, Perec’s long-time psychoanalyst. Pontalis describes a patient type, the "dream maker,” who provokes an extreme case of counter-transference and requires new methods in dream therapy. Pontalis, like many of Perec’s literary critics, was suspicious of the authenticity of Perec's dream journal and denied it both therapeutic and literary status. This article reinserts La Boutique obscure into Perec’s literary program. Through a discussion of the text's formal attributes and its sociological …
