A Survey Of Retail Trade Patterns In South Dakota: 2012-2021, Rand E. Wergin
Faculty Publications
This paper provides an analysis of retail sales and retail trade in the state of South Dakota for the years 2012 to 2021. This analysis will provide valuable information to community leaders in the cities and towns of South Dakota. Along with measures such as unemployment and inflation, Retail Pull (RP) provides a measure of community’s economic health. For example, retail is often the largest employer in a city, particularly the smaller communities of South Dakota, and a robust retail sector provides a tax base to support community services. Thus, the economic health of the community depends on the viability …

Work Hours In Retail: Room For Improvement, Françoise J. Carré, Chris Tilly
Upjohn Institute Policy Papers
With full-time jobs, hourly wages are appropriate primary indicators of job quality. However, in sectors where full-time schedules do not dominate, total hours matter for job quality and worker outcomes. We explored hour levels and trends in retail trade and its largest subsector, grocery stores. Retail is known for part-time and short shifts. With a comparison of retail hours in three countries—the United States, Canada, and Mexico—we contribute insights into aspects of the U.S. policy and regulatory systems that could be altered in order to improve retail jobs.

Short Hours, Long Hours: Hour Levels And Trends In The Retail Industry In The United States, Canada, And Mexico, Françoise Carré, Chris Tilly
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
In settings where most workers have full-time schedules, hourly wages are appropriate primary indicators of job quality and worker outcomes. However, in sectors where full-time schedules do not dominate—primarily service-producing activities—total hours matter, in addition to hourly wages, for job quality and worker outcomes. In this paper we employ a sector-focused, comparative framework to further examine hours levels—measured as average weekly hours—and trends in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. We analyze the retail sector, which is of interest because of its high rate of part-time employment in the U.S. Based on our fieldwork in the United States and Mexico …
Modeling The Economic Impacts Of Large Deployments On Local Communities, Aaron L. Gregory
Modeling The Economic Impacts Of Large Deployments On Local Communities, Aaron L. Gregory
Theses and Dissertations
The Global War on Terrorism has required the large scale deployment of active-duty troops to support operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. This thesis presents an economic analysis of the impacts these deployments have had on local communities as measured by changes in local retail sales. County level data from Colorado, Kansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee were combined with open source deployment information to construct panel models. Panel model analysis is a form of regression that combines cross-sectional and time-series dimensions. Seasonality and general economic conditions were also incorporated into the model. The goal of this research is to provide an …

Omaha Trade Area Study No. 03: License Plate Survey Of Eight Major Shopping Points, Donald W. Lea, John T. Wilhelm
Publications
This study represents the second in a series of license plate surveys to aid in a delimitation of Omaha's retail trade area. 1 The method utilized was a tabulation of license plate numbers at the major shopping points in Omaha, namely, the parking lots of Brandeis downtown, Crossroads and Westroads. Discussion is limited to two of the three large centers because this is the initial year for the opening of Westroads. Other shopping centers surveyed were Southroads, Skag-Way, GEM, Gulf Mart, and the Center.

Omaha Trade Area Study No. 01: License Plate Survey Of Two Major Shopping Points, Harold J. Retallick, Charles R. Gildersleeve
Publications
This study is a preliminary attempt at the delimitation of Omaha's retail trade area. The method used is that of recording license plate numbers at the two major shopping points in Omaha, the Central Business District and Crossroads, plus two other smaller shopping points--Southroads and The Center. Emphasis is placed upon the two major points for they give the best regional cross-section of Omaha's retail attraction.
