Cross-National Coverage Of Cross-Border Transit Migration: A Community Structure Approach, John C. Pollock, Kevin O'Brien, Madison Ouellette, Maria Gottfried, Petra Kovacs, Lauren Longo, Taylor Hart-Mcgonigle
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
A community structure analysis (exploring variations in community/national demographics linked to differences in reporting on critical issues) compared cross-national coverage of cross-border transit migration through Mediterranean and Central European countries in leading newspapers, one per country, in 16 countries, analyzing all articles of 250 words or more from 10/01/14 to 11/01/15. The resulting 238 total articles were coded for “prominence” and “direction” (“government responsibility,” “society responsibility” — including foreign aid, or “balanced/neutral” coverage) and combined into composite “media vector” scores for each newspaper (range 0.1132 to -0.2785, a total range of .3917). A majority of 12 of 16 (75%) of …

Determining Copyright, Licensing And Terms Of Use For A Digital Newspaper Collection: The Catholic News Archive, Jennifer Younger
Digital Initiatives Symposium
In this poster, I discuss how the Catholic Research Resources Alliance (CRRA) approached issues of copyright, licensing and terms of use for the Catholic News Archive. Implemented in summer 2016, the Archive provides online access to a full text, aggregated digital collection Catholic newspapers and is the only collection like it in existence. Our goal is to have a digital collection as openly accessible as possible, licensed under a Creative Commons license in concert with the interests of libraries, archives, publishers, scholars, funding agencies and other stakeholders. We needed to learn how views of stakeholders are similar or different, what …
The Golden Boy: An Examination Of Framing In National And Local News Coverage Of Jaylen Fryberg, Becca Freimuth
The Golden Boy: An Examination Of Framing In National And Local News Coverage Of Jaylen Fryberg, Becca Freimuth
Scholars Week
This framing analysis of national and local news coverage uses contextual analysis to examine how both print media and television media portrayed the 14-year-old shooter of the Marysville-Pilchuck High School shooting. After the October 24, 2014 shooting in a town of roughly 63,000 people, news media began coverage almost instantly-- including national news media. This study adds to previous research done on mass murders because the recency of the shooting means the coverage has yet to be looked at with a critical eye. In the analysis it was discovered that the majority of the coverage framed the shooter as a …

The Other September 11th: El Mercurio Media Coverage After The Chilean Coup Of 1973, Valeria A. Gurr‐Ovalle
Graduate Research Symposium (GCUA) (2010 - 2017)
This thesis provides an exploratory overview of the role the El Mercurio newspaper played along with the military after the Chilean coup of 1973. The study reviews the contents of the newspaper’s front pages, including their coverage of the events during the coup. The thesis will show how the paper revisited its coverage each year on the September 11th anniversary, beginning with the years dominated by the military government, from 1973 through 1990, and continuing through the transition to democracy, from 1991 through 2007. The primary method used in the course of this examination is a content analysis, which will …

Politics & Poverty: Is The New Media Changing The Message? An Analysis Of Framing In New Media News, Jessica Wheeler
Politics & Poverty: Is The New Media Changing The Message? An Analysis Of Framing In New Media News, Jessica Wheeler
Graduate Research Symposium (GCUA) (2010 - 2017)
Many media researchers have turned their attention to new media, specifically how the proliferation of blogs has changed the way media inuences the public agenda. Less attention has been paid to how blogs and new media are changing the way news is framed and reported. In a preliminary case study two elements of political news reporting on blogs were explored: 1) Do political blogs focus more on insider information and process news than traditional media’s online news outlets? 2) What implications, if any, does this dierence have on the value of the information in assisting the audience form opinions about …
