The Perceived Credibility Of Professional Photojournalism Compared To User-Generated Content Among American News Media Audiences, Gina Gayle
Dissertations - ALL
This study examines the perceived credibility of professional photojournalism in context to the usage of User-Generated Content (UGC) when compared across digital news and social media platforms, by individual news consumers in the United States employing a Q methodology experiment. The literature review studies source credibility as the theoretical framework through which to begin; however, using an inductive design, the data may indicate additional patterns and themes. Credibility as a news concept has been studied in terms of print media, broadcast and cable television, social media, and inline news, both individually and between genres. Very few studies involve audience perceptions …

Bootstrapping Web Archive Collections From Micro-Collections In Social Media, Alexander C. Nwala
Bootstrapping Web Archive Collections From Micro-Collections In Social Media, Alexander C. Nwala
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
In a Web plagued by disappearing resources, Web archive collections provide a valuable means of preserving Web resources important to the study of past events. These archived collections start with seed URIs (Uniform Resource Identifiers) hand-selected by curators. Curators produce high quality seeds by removing non-relevant URIs and adding URIs from credible and authoritative sources, but this ability comes at a cost: it is time consuming to collect these seeds. The result of this is a shortage of curators, a lack of Web archive collections for various important news events, and a need for an automatic system for generating seeds. …

Economic Barriers To Media Entrepreneurship And Media Plurality, Aidan Christopher Mcgloin
Economic Barriers To Media Entrepreneurship And Media Plurality, Aidan Christopher Mcgloin
Journalism
The purpose of this article started out with a simple hypothesis: the lack of media plurality in America is due to an increase in news publishing costs and standards over the past hundred years. News presses have increased in so much cost that new publishers have no chance to front the high up-front cost or maintain journalistic quality with their competition.

Framing U.S.-Venezuelan Relations Under Bush And Chávez: Origins Of A Country In Crisis, Rashaunna Campbell
Framing U.S.-Venezuelan Relations Under Bush And Chávez: Origins Of A Country In Crisis, Rashaunna Campbell
Communication
Venezuela has the largest proven oil reserves in the world and is the third largest source of U.S. petroleum, but today it is a country in crisis. Moreover, relations between the U.S. and Venezuela shifted dramatically under the Bush and Chávez administrations. This contentious relationship along with Venezuela’s ongoing political, economic, and humanitarian crises have resulted in a repressive government, hyperinflation, starvation, mortality, and mass emigration from the country. Based on the theory that international news coverage is influenced by the experiences and attitudes of people from different nations and regions, this study compared domestic and Latin American news coverage …

How Have Tv News Reporters’ Duties Changed In The Past 15 Years?, Katy Harris
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
The days of traditional TV news reporting included a reporter, cameraman, producer, and editor. A team of people was needed to launch a single news story onto television. Television news reporting has undergone a period of tremendous change during the rise of the Internet. Also, economic pressures to downsize the newsroom, technological advancements, and social media have turned the traditional reporter into a multi-media journalist. This project will discuss the actual technical and rhetorical choices made in the production of short newsroom documentary. This study explains the transition from the traditional news reporting style of reporter and cameraman teaming up …

Legacy journalism norms value a concept of objectivity, yet coverage often contains implicit biases. Such biases can influence the message the audience draws from a story. The narratives in a story can determine whether it will make a difference, or whether it will be lost in a myriad of stories with the same skeleton. The term solutions journalism began floating the field in 1998. Solutions Journalism Network partnered with The Seattle Times to create the Education Lab, a solutions-oriented reporting beat. Solutions journalism and reporting done …

The Whole Truth: The Denominational Press Versus The Secular Press, Jennifer Goldsberry
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis compares the reporting from The Boston Globe versus The Boston Pilot regarding the evolving story of sexual abuse perpetrated by Catholic clergy in 2002. Across all the articles, quotes from clergymen and victims, respectively, are counted, word choice and article placement are evaluated, and a ratio between staff articles versus articles from outside news organizations is created. Opinion editorials written by staff are also included in the analysis. All of these topics combine to determine the fairness, accuracy, and balance represented in the reporting of both publications.

Honors College Portfolios
This portfolio is a compilation of my written and published work during my time as a Duquesne student, whether completed in class or for an internship. My portfolio, filled with articles focusing on a wide range of genres and topics, offers a glimpse into the life of a journalist, as well as the media field in general.
While it is essential for a journalism student to study the laws, ethics, theories and concepts behind journalism, its importance and its history, we must also go out into the world and report. How can one become a successful journalist without actually reporting …
