Localization In Mine Action: Where The Possible Meets The Necessary, Markus Schindler
Localization In Mine Action: Where The Possible Meets The Necessary, Markus Schindler
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
While arguments for greater localization in humanitarian aid are strong, in humanitarian mine action (HMA) the case is not always as clear and requires detailed discussion. Despite these challenges, however, the development of national nongovernmental organizations (NNGOs) in mine action is advocated for, as they can offer local knowledge, reduce costs, improve efficiency, and contribute to national ownership. HMA stands out from other sectors due to its resource-intensive and highly regulated nature, often necessitating the use of expensive equipment and specialized expatriates. This article discusses the concept of localization in HMA, emphasizing its distinct challenges compared to other humanitarian sectors. …

The George Harris Show August 08, 2022, Part 5 Spanish To English Translation, Jonathan Gerweck
Honors College Theses
This thesis is an attempt at a Spanish-to-English translation of part of a comedy skit by Venezuelan American comedian George Harris performed on October 11, 2022, in Miami, Florida. As an academic, I have been captivated by foreign languages since a young age and have studied German up to the collegiate level. After moving to New York and studying at Pace University, an educational institution that does not offer German, I decided to teach myself Spanish. I reached the Advanced level of the language within my second semester of officially studying it at Pace University. I believe that the future …

This study demonstrates that microcontent, a snippet of personalized content that responds to users’ needs, is a form of localization reliant on a content ecology. In contributing to users’ localized experiences, technical communicators should recognize their work as part of an assemblage in which users, content, and metrics augment each other to produce personalized content that can be consumed by and delivered through artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted technology.
Exploring The Effect Of Cultural Sensitivity In Public Relations Campaigns, Amanda N. Christian
Exploring The Effect Of Cultural Sensitivity In Public Relations Campaigns, Amanda N. Christian
Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current
This study examines the importance of perceived cultural sensitivity on consumer attitudes and intent to support. Participants were randomly assigned to campaign messaging with a perceived high level of cultural sensitivity or a perceived low level of cultural sensitivity. Findings reveal that higher perceived levels of culturally sensitive messages generate more positive attitudes and increase the willingness of consumers to demonstrate supportive communication and intent to purchase. Other hypotheses comparing the response between two groups—self-identifying Hispanic and non-Hispanic respondents— aimed to distinguish the role origin plays in determining how important cultural sensitivity is to the perception of the organization. These …

Resilience-Focused Journalism: The Motivations, Tactics, And Impact Of The Los Angeles Times Coverage Of Earthquake Risk, Thomas Jamieson, Douglas A. Van Belle
Public Administration Faculty Publications
As disasters and climate change threaten more and more people around the world, it is increasingly important for communities to adopt resilience policies. However, despite considerable benefits and the high probability of a return on investment, resilience policies are often neglected. In this article, we examine the agenda setting campaign by the Los Angeles Times that helped create the conditions for mandatory retrofitting ordinances to succeed where previous attempts failed. Through in-depth interviews with journalists and editors at the Times, and policymakers involved in the debate, we illustrate the motivations, tactics, and impact of their coverage of earthquake risk in …
Remixing An Open Educational Resource: A Case Study Of The Uncommon “R”, Lusiella Fazzino, Julie Turley
Remixing An Open Educational Resource: A Case Study Of The Uncommon “R”, Lusiella Fazzino, Julie Turley
Urban Library Journal
Open educational resources address the crisis college students face purchasing textbooks. Although academic librarians play a prominent role implementing the open educational resource solution, by engaging faculty in their use and creation, librarians could go further. At the College of New Rochelle, instruction librarians teamed up with the Scholarly Communications Librarian to revise and remix an already existing information literacy textbook. This case study outlines how an open educational resource textbook was altered and localized to reflect students’ lived reality. The textbook was used in a credit-bearing information literacy course for the College’s Liberal Arts adult education B.A. program.
Limit Theory For Moderate Deviation From Integrated Garch Processes, Yubo Tao
Limit Theory For Moderate Deviation From Integrated Garch Processes, Yubo Tao
Research Collection School Of Economics
This paper develops the limit theory of the GARCH(1,1) process that moderately deviates from IGARCH process towards both stationary and explosive regimes. The asymptotic theory extends Berkes et al. (2005) by allowing the parameters to have a slower rate of convergence. The results can be applied to unit root test for processes with mildly-integrated GARCH innovations (e.g. Boswijk (2001), Cavaliere and Taylor (2007, 2009)) and deriving limit theory of estimators for models involving mildly-integrated GARCH processes (e.g. Jensen and Rahbek (2004), Francq and Zakoïan (2012, 2013).

Why Csas Matter: (Re)Localizing For People-Based Food Networks, Gretchen Alexander
Why Csas Matter: (Re)Localizing For People-Based Food Networks, Gretchen Alexander
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis details the history of Claremont Market Shares, a Community Sourced Agriculture (CSA) project based out of Claremont, California. By using this project as a jumping off point for discussing local food networks, buzzwords such as "organic" and "local" are analyzed and re-defined. I argue for a people-based food network model over the currently popular 'place-based' that prioritizes producer-consumer relationships. The CSA functions as a sustainable model of this ideology.

Non-GPS localization has gained much interest from researchers and industries recently because GPS might fail to meet the accuracy requirements in shadowing environments. The two most common range-based non-GPS localization methods, namely Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) and Angle-of-Arrival (AOA), have been intensively mentioned in the literature over the last decade. However, an in-depth analysis of the weighted combination methods of AOA and RSSI in shadowing environments is still missing in the state-of-the-art. This paper proposes several weighted combinations of the two RSSI and AOA components in the form of pAOA + qRSSI, devises the mathematical model for analyzing shadowing …
Three Essays On Urban Consumer Service Firms: Evidence From Yelp, Josh Matti
Three Essays On Urban Consumer Service Firms: Evidence From Yelp, Josh Matti
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
This dissertation explores questions related to consumer services using Yelp data from the Phoenix area. Chapter 1 explores competition. Competition is a key feature of the market process assumed to improve market outcomes. But how strong is the relationship between competition and positive consumer experiences, and how does the relationship vary across space? This chapter explores these questions by exploiting Yelp data from thousands of restaurants in the Phoenix area. After controlling for restaurant characteristics, census tract level demographics, census tract fixed effects, and sub-industry fixed effects, the results are consistent with spatial competition positively affecting consumer experiences. Chapter 2 …
Estimating State-Industry Employment, With An Application To Industrial Localization, Andrew J. Cassey, Ben O. Smith
Estimating State-Industry Employment, With An Application To Industrial Localization, Andrew J. Cassey, Ben O. Smith
Economics Faculty Publications
We describe a method to construct an industry-by-state repeated cross-section of employment at the most disaggregated level publicly available, covering 1963–2012. Nondisclosed data are estimated with a procedure using the hierarchical information structure. To illustrate the usefulness of the procedure, the resulting estimated data are tested to determine if industrial localization of the processed food sector has changed over the last 50 years in the United States. Our findings suggest it has not changed systemically despite variation in levels of localization within industries.
Cultural Differences In Russian And English Magazine Advertising: A Pragmatic Approach, Emily Kay Furner
Cultural Differences In Russian And English Magazine Advertising: A Pragmatic Approach, Emily Kay Furner
Theses and Dissertations
Many American companies looking to increase sales and achieve growth targets consider expanding the reach of their product lines to other countries. However, expansion on a global scale often requires much trial and error as English-speaking companies try to market their goods to a foreign audience. In order to ease this process, localization experts are often hired to "localize" or change advertisements in order to make them more culturally relevant to consumers. Because the field of localization is relatively new, there is little research done on the degree and extent to which advertisements are localized. The purpose of this study …

The Spatial Distribution Of Urban Consumer Service Firms: Evidence From Yelp Reviews, Brad Humphreys, Josh Matti
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
A growing literature employs distance-based measures of localization to assess the spatial distribution of firms with a focus on manufacturing across a country. We analyze the spatial concentration of a variety of consumer services firms in the Phoenix, AZ area using geo-referenced Yelp data from over 29,000 establishments. Results from a K-density approach indicate substantial localization and service differentiation among localized firms. Firm concentration varies across service cost and quality; higher quality/cost establishments tend to cluster. Our results further understanding of the modern urban landscape as cities are increasingly centers of consumption.
Indoor Scene Localization To Fight Sex Trafficking In Hotels, Abigail Stylianou
Indoor Scene Localization To Fight Sex Trafficking In Hotels, Abigail Stylianou
McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Images are key to fighting sex trafficking. They are: (a) used to advertise for sex services,(b) shared among criminal networks, and (c) connect a person in an image to the place where the image was taken. This work explores the ability to link images to indoor places in order to support the investigation and prosecution of sex trafficking. We propose and develop a framework that includes a database of open-source information available on the Internet, a crowd-sourcing approach to gathering additional images, and explore a variety of matching approaches based both on hand-tuned features such as SIFT and learned features …
Modern Capitalism And Food Commoditization: The Limitations Of Industrial Agriculture And The Challenges Of Sustainable Alternatives, Gerardo Patron-Cano
Modern Capitalism And Food Commoditization: The Limitations Of Industrial Agriculture And The Challenges Of Sustainable Alternatives, Gerardo Patron-Cano
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Agriculture is an essential function of contemporary human life that is bound by nature. Therefore, economic, social, and environmental perspectives must be examined to identify the most sustainable agricultural systems. This thesis argues that agriculture should be divorced from capitalist economic principles regarding specialization, trade, and production scale. Such principles have supported industrialized growing methods, which have been economically, socially, and environmentally unsustainable. In order for agriculture to be sustainable and equitable, food systems need to be de-commoditized and removed from the capitalist market. Policies should target the local control of food systems by empowering communities to subsidize localized production-consumption …
Simulating Confidence For The Ellison-Glaeser Index, Andrew J. Cassey, Ben O. Smith
Simulating Confidence For The Ellison-Glaeser Index, Andrew J. Cassey, Ben O. Smith
Economics Faculty Publications
The Ellison and Glaeser (1997) index is an unbiased statistic of industrial localization. Though the expected value of the index is known, ad hoc thresholds are used to interpret the extent of localization. We improve the interpretation of the index by simulating confidence intervals that a practitioner may use for a statistical test. In the data, we find cases whose index value is above the ad hoc threshold that are not statistically significant. We find many cases below the ad hoc threshold that are statistically significant. Our simulation program is freely available and is customizable for specific applications.

Concept And Simulation Study Of A Novel Localization Method For Robotic Endoscopic Capsules Using Multiple Positron Emission Markers, Trung Duc Than, Gursel Alici, Steven Harvey, Hao Zhou, Weihua Li
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
Purpose: Over the last decade, wireless capsule endoscope has been the tool of choice for noninvasive inspection of the gastrointestinal tract, especially in the small intestine. However, the latest clinical products have not been equipped with a sufficiently accurate localization system which makes it difficult to determine the location of intestinal abnormalities, and to apply follow-up interventions such as biopsy or drug delivery. In this paper, the authors present a novel localization method based on tracking three positron emission markers embedded inside an endoscopic capsule. Methods: Three spherical 22Na markers with diameters of less than 1 mm are embedded in …

The wireless capsule endoscope (WCE) is a first-line medical tool for the diagnosis of many gastrointestinal (GI) tract diseases such as obscure GI bleeding, Crohn's disease, small bowel tumors, and Celiac disease. Over the past few years, significant research attention has been paid to upgrading the WCE from a diagnostic-only tool to an active medical robot having not only diagnostic capabilities but therapeutic functionalities, such as biopsy, microsurgery, and targeted drug delivery, as well. One of the major limitations that impedes the development of such a robotic-type endoscope is the lack of a highly accurate localization system. In this paper, …

A Joining Of Hands: Form, Function, And Diversity At A Buddhist Monastery In Batesville, Mississippi, Tanna Tan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Buddhism is a religious tradition that spans the globe, and has erupted in popularity in the United States since the 1960s. This is a study of Thãch Nhat Hanh's "mindfulness" practice center, Magnolia Grove Monastery, in Batesville, Mississippi. Participant observation and interviews are implemented to understand the local concerns of its practitioners, and how they deal with these concerns. "Mindfulness" practice is made locally relevant to its practitioners through what I term "localization processes." these processes enable members at the site to negotiate different meanings of this tradition amongst themselves. An individual's "localization process" consists of several "boundaries" or elements …

Visuo-Spatial Abilities In Remote Perception: A Meta-Analysis Of Empirical Work, Thomas Fincannon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Meta-analysis was used to investigate the relationship between visuo-spatial ability and performance in remote environments. In order to be included, each study needed to examine the relationship between the use of an ego-centric perspective and various dimensions of performance (i.e., identification, localization, navigation, and mission completion time). The moderator analysis investigated relationships involving: (a) visuo-spatial construct with an emphasis on Carroll’s (1993) visualization (VZ) factor; (b) performance outcome (i.e., identification, localization, navigation, and mission completion time); (c) autonomy to support mission performance; (d) task type (i.e., navigation vs. reconnaissance); and (e) experimental testbed (i.e., physical vs. virtual environments). The process …

The Costs Of Increased Localization For A Multiple-Product Food Supply Chain: Dairy In The United States, Charles F. Nicholson, Miguel I. Gomez, Oliver H. Gao
Agribusiness
There is increased interest in greater localization of food supply chains but little evidence about the effects of localization on supply-chain costs. Assessing these effects is complex in multiple-product, multi-process supply chains such as the dairy industry. In this study, we develop a spatially-disaggregated transshipment model for the US dairy sector that minimizes total supply-chain costs, including assembly, processing, interplant transportation and final product distribution. We employ the cost-minimizing solution as benchmark to compare alternative scenarios of increased supply chain localization. Our results indicate: (1) short-run limits to increased localization, (2) modest impacts on overall supply-chain costs, and (3) large …
Learning-Based Prostate Localization For Image Guided Radiation Therapy, Luping Zhou, Shu Liao, Wei Li, Dinggang Shen
Learning-Based Prostate Localization For Image Guided Radiation Therapy, Luping Zhou, Shu Liao, Wei Li, Dinggang Shen
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
Accurate prostate localization is the key to the success of radiotherapy. It remains a difficult problem for CT images due to the low image contrast, the prostate motion, and the uncertain presence of rectum gas. In this paper, a learning based framework is proposed to improve the accuracy of prostate detection in CT. It adaptively determines distinctive feature types at distinctive image regions, thus filtering out features that are salient in image appearance, but irrelevant to prostate localization. Furthermore, an image similarity function is learned to make the image appearance distance consistent with the underlying prostate alignment. The efficacy of …
Neural Reuse: A Fundamental Organizational Principle Of The Brain, Michael Anderson
Neural Reuse: A Fundamental Organizational Principle Of The Brain, Michael Anderson
Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications
An emerging class of theories concerning the functional structure of the brain takes the reuse of neural circuitry for various cognitive purposes to be a central organizational principle. According to these theories, it is quite common for neural circuits established for one purpose to be exapted (exploited, recycled, redeployed) during evolution or normal development, and be put to different uses, often without losing their original functions. Neural reuse theories thus differ from the usual understanding of the role of neural plasticity (which is, after all, a kind of reuse) in brain organization along the following lines: According to neural reuse, …

The Transition Movement In Australia: An Analysis Of The Progress, Challenges, And Future Of Transition Initiatives, Mia Goldwasser
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The threats of climate change and peak oil have roots in our society’s dependence on the availability of cheap fossil fuels for its function and design. In order to both decrease greenhouse gas emissions and significantly lower the demand on fossil fuels, our settlements –built when oil was cheap and abundant- must ‘relocalize’, or develop the systems which will enable the local production of food, energy, materials, employment, and goods. The Transition Movement has developed as a grassroots, community-based response to these challenges, grounded in the belief that a higher quality of life has the opportunity to emerge from a …

Experiencing Transcendence: Filipino Conversion Narratives And The Localization Of Pentecostal-Charismatic Christianity, Filomeno V. Aguilar Jr
History Department Faculty Publications
In contrast to functionalist explanations for the spread of Pentecostal and charismatic Christianity, this article discursively analyzes conversion narratives to understand the localization of a global cultural phenomenon. The narratives were drawn from interviews, conducted in 2005, with members of the El Shaddai and Jesus-is-Lord movements. Approached from the perspective of critical realism, the narratives embody a diversity of plots, creative tensions, and distinctively Filipino elements that speak of a reconstituted self and a new engagement with society. They reveal the informants' grappling with the question of God's existence, which finds resolution in individualized experiences of transcendence that generate and …
The Localization Of The Western Globalization Discourse In Egypt, Mohamed Waked
The Localization Of The Western Globalization Discourse In Egypt, Mohamed Waked
Archived Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the 'localization' of globalization discourse in Egypt by following its rise in the United States to its reception by various local knowledge structures in Egypt. It argues that the main characteristics of the discourse show that it represents a new phase of an old colonial narrative, in operation at least since the introduction of modernization theories. The thesis finds little structural novelty in globalization knowledge, as the discourse structurally resembles older paradigms of modernization in ideas, assumptions, and analytical methodologies. As such, even though it is portrayed as a discovery of a new knowledge paradigm, it represents …
