Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

PhD students have unique needs and require different resources and services from the library than undergraduates, which is especially true of professionals in a nursing program. As clinicians, many do not have experience with the research and writing intensive requirements of a doctoral degree. The majority have not taken classes for years, and their master’s degrees were more hands-on, clinically-based. They often do not feel confident in their ability to search the literature, read closely, or write expansively. A unique avenue through which to meet their needs and share library resources is a PhD colloquium course.

Library instruction to improve information literacy (IL) is often considered essential only for undergraduates. However, students in graduate/professional programs do not always have the requisite skills needed for graduate level study and research, which suggests they may also benefit from library instruction targeted specifically to graduate students. This study used a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the effectiveness of library instruction for increasing IL skills and/or knowledge among graduate and professional students. This study assessed the effectiveness of one-shot library instruction sessions on knowledge acquisition and retention in Biology undergraduate students. In early Spring 2018 semester, the students enrolled in six sessions of Bio 112 at Adelphi University attended library instruction classes to learn about scientific literature. One-shot library instruction sessions were conducted to teach students in each section how to identify research, review and popular science magazine articles. A post-instruction test was conducted in late April and early May, 2018, to determine whether the students retained information from library instruction classes. Although the term “social justice” itself is commonly attributed to a 19th century Catholic theologian, the concept of social justice and imperatives to work toward its realization are integral to virtually all religious and spiritual traditions. Religious traditions have historically shaped institutions and power relationships in profound ways and continue to do so alongside the rise of the “nones” (those with no religious affiliation). Moreover, the complex interplay between religious and other cultural, racial, ethnic, lingual, political, and economic forces render a critical social analysis that leaves out religious factors woefully incomplete. After several years of consistently offering the same one-shot session and library assignment in the First Year Experience seminar, feedback from several stakeholders in the course indicated it was time to change things up. The resulting lesson plan reached to serve information literacy outcomes while encouraging first year students to explore their new environment, engage with their city’s history, and learn to see research as a problem solving tool. Attendees will learn in what ways it was successful and what lessons were learned along the way.

In 2013, an online information literacy skills course was implemented for two core courses (English Composition II and Strategies for Success) at a large research university. This short online unit, Introduction to Library Research Strategies, is offered via the campus learning management system, Canvas. It can be used as a replacement for face-to-face instruction, or as a pre-assignment to “flip” library instruction. Now two years into the project, we will examine our instruction statistics to see how it has impacted the program overall. Results from an instructor survey and a librarian survey will also be reviewed.

Albertsons Library has successfully leveraged the use mobile devices for helping students learn research skills. Librarians are now going to classrooms and teaching two instruction sessions — 1) finding information and 2) evaluating information. The library sessions provide hands-on, active learning opportunities for student teams, built around the use of iPads to explore library resources. In fall 2012, this included instruction to seventy-four classes in Boise State's "University Foundations 100" course, the first course in our general education program. In recent years, an unsustainable economic model has emerged in many academic libraries—skyrocketing journal subscription costs coupled with diminishing materials budgets. What if vendor prices for journal subscriptions rise so fast that our budgets just can’t keep pace? Could we continue to meet the needs of our patrons if we had to cut EBSCO and other expensive aggregator databases? And for those of us charged with teaching good research skills, how would instruction change? In this interactive session we will tackle the above questions, present some open source alternatives to subscription databases, and discuss “vendor-free” information literacy instruction.
