The Perfect Storm: The Convergence Of Social, Mobile And Photo Technologies In Libraries, Wendy Abbott, Jessie Donaghey, Joanna Hare, Peta J. Hopkins
Wendy Abbott
The intersection of mobile and photographic technologies with social networks has produced platforms such as Instagram. The way libraries are using these platforms has not been investigated in depth. This research aims to discover trends in the use of Instagram by libraries, reporting on selected libraries’ experiences and intentions behind capturing and sharing images on Instagram. Recommendations will be made on how librarians can transform relationships and engagement with their communities through mobile photo sharing, taking advantage of ‘the perfect storm’ of technological convergence.

Social Media For International Students – It's Not All About Facebook, Grace Saw, Wendy Abbott, Jessie Donaghey
Wendy Abbott
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to discover which social networking sites international students prefer for information dissemination activities. As more libraries experiment with social networking to inform and connect with students, there is a need to determine the effectiveness of this strategy for reaching international students. The paper seeks to address three questions: what social networking sites do international students prefer and why? Which sites do they use to socialise and which do they use to gather and distribute information? How can libraries leverage this information to enhance the international student experience? Design/methodology/approach – Information on social …

JLAMS
This review provides (1) a discussion of best practices, including the content and frequency of posts, and (2) tips on how to get started on a library oriented page. Facebook is a powerful social media platform that, when used correctly, can have beneficial effects for academic library outreach and marketing. However, it is not a catch-all for engagement with students, staff, faculty, and the public. Engagement through Facebook needs to be carefully thought out and well-planned in order to meet the needs of library outreach and work toward the university and library strategic plan.

Technical Services Reports and Statistics
This report lists the total amounts invoiced to the University of Rhode Island Libraries by the bibliographic utility OCLC during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2017.
Costs are broken down by invoice date and category and include all library locations (RIN, RIU, and RIX).
We pay two fixed monthly fees for each location: one for cataloging (FIX9832) and one for interlibrary loan (FIX9836). Note that for FY2017, the former third fixed monthly fee for access (FIX6600) was eliminated and absorbed into the fixed fees for cataloging and interlibrary loan. This accounts for part of the increase in fixed cataloging …

Health Sciences Assessment At Unc Charlotte: A Collection Devleopment Fellowship, Stephen Krueger
The Southeastern Librarian
The J. Murrey Atkins Library at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte serves over 21,000 undergraduates and over 4,000 graduate students. Apart from the sole branch library (Arts & Architecture), all of the resources are housed in the main building. In 2016, a plan was developed for a comprehensive weeding project. Two primary factors made this necessary. One was the adaptive nature of the library’s philosophy; student needs and preferences were constantly assessed, and changes were made to the library’s services and spaces based on them. The creation of a makerspace, a family-friendly study room, and other student workspaces …

- Coding & analysis of results, mapping findings from the interview transcriptions
- Our findings and conclusions which, though drawn from agriculture, are potentially applicable to a broader range of science researchers
Our message to attendees is that anyone can do this research with the right preparation and support. …
Academic Librarians Working With Their Lgbtq Patrons: An Exploratory Survey, Martin Morris, John Siegel
Academic Librarians Working With Their Lgbtq Patrons: An Exploratory Survey, Martin Morris, John Siegel

Introduction
There is now a small but growing body of evidence to demonstrate that LGBTQ library patrons often have specific and distinct information needs and information-seeking behaviours (Beiringer and Jackson, 2007; Schaller, 2011; Morris and Roberto, 2016). Many academic libraries are recognizing these specific needs and making increasing efforts to meet them, informed by new diversity statements and plans. However, these efforts are far from universal.
Given the increased attention and awareness of LGBTQ issues, librarians must be equipped to assist researchers and consumers with LGBTQ-themed inquiries. A number of studies have been conducted with physicians, mental health counsellors, and …

Who Mentored Whom?: A Conversation About Leadership, Sam Boss, Celia Rabinowitz
ACRL New England Chapter Annual Conference
Library leaders are grappling with changes in the role of libraries on our campuses, the identities and work of our library faculty and staff, and our responsibilities as voices in the senior leadership of our campuses. We occupy a unique role at the institution, yet we must also respond to enrollment instability, resource costs and budgets, student success, and facility use and planning. For library leaders, developing a campus-based support network can be difficult. Though we are engaged in finding solutions to the same challenges as our colleagues in other departments, we often encounter them from a different angle.

"The Library Catalog Is Definitely The Best Place To Find Articles!” Overconfidence Among Undergraduate Library Users, Katelyn Angell
"The Library Catalog Is Definitely The Best Place To Find Articles!” Overconfidence Among Undergraduate Library Users, Katelyn Angell
ACRL New England Chapter Annual Conference
Investigators in several academic subjects have conducted research focused on determining if undergraduate students are overconfident regarding their knowledge of disciplinary subject matter. Up until recently, most of these studies have investigated students of psychology or economics. However, a handful of academic librarians have begun to conduct similar studies with undergraduate library users, curious whether this population shows similar overconfidence in their grasp of academic research. Overconfidence is a major problem for students because it interferes with both learning and an authentic self-awareness. The present study surveyed 34 undergraduates to assess if they were overconfident about their knowledge in key …

Calendars In Alma--Seriously???, Tari Keller
Calendars In Alma--Seriously???, Tari Keller
Library Presentations
Coming from Voyager, after over 16 years of setting up and updating calendars for a multi-library university, configuring the calendars in Alma was confusing. The calendars in Alma use the standard hours for major terms as a starting point. Exceptions are defined by “Closing” the library to shorten the hours and “Opening” the library to extend the hours, instead of giving the hours of operation on the days when exceptions occur. The University of Kentucky has everything from a 24 x 5+ main library to a 40 hour a week storage facility. Library hours change between semesters and do different …

In The Library And Online: Social Media And Civic Discourse, Samantha A. Mairson
Honors Scholar Theses
This thesis analyzes the findings of an interview-based research study of public-serving libraries in the state of Connecticut. Specifically, it examines these institutions’ use of social media to promote civic discourse online and on-site with the purpose of producing guidelines for best practices. This new research emerges from the Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts research Experience (SHARE) Award project, “Museums, Libraries, and Civic Discourse in Connecticut,” which concluded Spring 2016.
The research develops an understanding of the use of social media by public-serving libraries, presents three models for dissemination of findings to the field, and concludes with key observations and …

To Scan Or Not To Scan, Nancy Richey, Amanda Drost, Allison Day
The Southeastern Librarian
Librarians and archivists have made great strides in making collections discoverable and accessible to a wide audience by creating electronic finding aids, digitizing materials and using social media, but modern researchers want more. Their research needs, practices and expectations are rapidly changing both in academia and in many other areas. Researchers are looking for quick, painless access to primary resource materials and the ability to use new communication technology mechanisms to gain this access. The authors of this study were interested in the policies and practices of academic special libraries in the United States and Canada. Did they permit scanning/capture …

Opening Keynote: Fulfilling Our Mission In The Digital Age, Joan K. Lippincott
Digital Initiatives Symposium
Academic libraries have always supported the institutional missions of teaching, research, and service or community. There are many opportunities to enhance that support in the digital environment. Digital tools are fundamental to many research activities and many students would like to use digital technologies in meaningful ways in their education. In supporting digital scholarship, libraries can promote partnerships with faculty in research and teaching. Faculty engaging in digital research frequently involve their students, often including some on their research team and then either developing some of their digital content as part of class work or using the products of their …
